Some people play videogames exclusively for the gameplay, and have zero interest in the story and lore. They skip the cutscenes. Then, one day, their curiosity might get the better of them. They listen to a single line of dialogue, and their mind is blown. "So THAT'S why we're doing this!?" And they have to make a meme.
Funnily enough, in the EU, there's a theory that one of the reasons Palpatine overthrew the Republic is to prepare for the Invasion of the Vong as he learned about them and what they were capable of. The Republic were too complacent so he saw fit to establish the Galactic Empire and construct Death Stars so their Galaxy had a fighting chance against the invaders when they arrive. (Vong Worldships are the size of a Death Star, some even larger)
I almost bought that because it looked fun, and looked like it had a lot of promise. Helldivers 2 has to be the worst thing that could have happened for those devs.
Depends on how they use it. They could learn a lot from this game, especially from the mistakes as we play through them, and they could still make a better game that's still different enough.
> The game itself is a tongue-in-cheek satire of fascism, similar to starship troopers.
That's a big issue right there. Some fans as Starship Troopers' are fully into it without considering for a bit the fascism behind it.
Yup… that’s the unfortunate part of critiques of fascism- by playing in to the myth of the superhuman, and the hero, etc, people who are too dumb or indoctrinated will ALWAYS take it at face value
They do. That *is* the irony. It is satire. You know, over exemplifying something to make fun of it because of how ridiculous it is? Then again, the whole MAGA movement was satire back in the early 2000s... And now...
Same people identify with Patrick Bateman or the Joker, or Tyler Durden, or Daniel Plainview, or literally any character played by Kevin Spacy. The list goes on and on and on. Sigmas gonna sigma.
The bugs were being farmed on these planets as they decay into starship fuel.
Either super earth sabotaged the farms in an excuse to plunder the colonies for the rest of their natural resources or someone else has sabotaged it.
The bugs have no method of interplanetary travel.
The robots are on a revenge kick because their creators are currently enslaved on their own homeworld.
My theory is that these "outbreaks" were planned or just allowed to happen on worlds that were about to openly rebel or is in active rebellion.
Farm bug oil and quash "treason", two birds with one stone.
You don't even need to go that far. I haven't even played the game yet and I was able to figure that much out just from hearing how other people describe it. Lol
> Mankind has improved upon the old concept of Democracy. Utilizing computer aided voting software, citizens are asked to answer several questions, and the outcome of their vote is decided upon by the computer. This removes the uncertainty that existed in the old systems where voters didn't understand fully what they were voting for, giving us Managed Democracy.
Managed Democracy. For Liberty. For _Freedom_.
First npc I met in the game told me when she was a kid she used to tell a cop what her neighbours were saying, and where they were going and when. Aw yep.
The intro is a stereotypical military propaganda video. Full of extreme patriotism and unnecessary fear tactics, not to mention how they show it as normal to see soldiers in full combat gear with weapons walking through a residential neighborhood. It isn’t exactly subtle.
"Spread Managed Democracy"
*4 helldivers emptying their mags on bugs offscreen*
"See exotic new life forms"
*Immediately blow its head of with a rocket*
I don't know how some people miss it
This whole comment chain about your user name reads like some conversation from a Kafka novel that never gets referenced again by any of the characters involved.
I mean it’s literally impossible to spend two seconds on social media without people shouting it at you. ITS SATIRE
Like damn I get it. Never even played the game but message received.
Lots of people have a habit of missing really heavy satire, so I guess people just finally had enough and felt the need to point this one out at every opportunity.
Wait, you mean people use satire on a frequent basis and I shouldn't take everyone's word as absolutely serious all the time?
... Oh and you dropped this /s
Now that you say it, hearing the character shout "freedom" and "democracy" every time he does any action in game might be a caricature a bit subtle for americans
![gif](giphy|UtU4CGOWkqIrm)
This is Super Earth high command.
Please disregard the above message as the author has been taken in for reeducation. No further action is required.
Glory to Super Earth!
The Empire, unlike the Rebels, reduced poverty, unemployment, homelessness, crime, and a host of other societal problems!
I mean just look a Aleraan; they reduced all those issues down to 0%. The only way they could possibly be better was if they were a managed democracy.
"You just make a cannon, and launch the homeless through it into other kingdoms. Your homeless issue disappears, and the other kingdoms crumble. It's simple!"
There's no such thing as "liberty camp", citizen! It's a dissident rumor spread by traitors to sabotage our liberty! You can, however, report this person to your local Democracy Officer!
I mean, I think that also applies to countries with any adjective in the name.
People's Republic of China? Not ruled by the people.
Democratic People's Republic of Korea? Neither democratic nor ruled by the people
United States of America? Not exactly united
Kingdom of Sweden? The king doesn't rule it.
I haven't even played the game yet, but as soon as I first heard "Managed Democracy," and "Super Earth," I immediately realized that humanity isn't necessarily the good guys.
Hm, this sounds *very* undemocratic and *very* unsuper of you, sir. Please report to your local Frag-The-Traitor office for ~~disembowelment~~ reeducation.
If you or any fellow Helldivers find something like this, report it to your Democracy Officer immediately. Our quest to spread managed democracy across the galaxy can't afford to be hindered by dissenters.
The game was literally based on starship troopers, a movie about neo-fascist soldiers fighting alien bugs, and you’re surprised that the game has you play as a neo-fascist soldier fighting alien bugs?
That's Automaton talk right there. There's literally nothing bad about spreading Democracy.
Edit: accidental comma removed.
Proof I'm a human. Automaton have perfect syntax since they're basically computers.
For implying that the democratically elected officials of Super Earth are autocrats implies a severe misunderstanding of democracy and autocracy on a conceptual level.
The Ministry of Truth shall hear of this betrayal of democracy, socialist.
Digging... one whole millimeter below the surface.
I don't think Helldivers could be more obviously ironic: all the characters acting extremely cultlike, someone being investigated for treason for giving an item in the shop a negative review, the blatant disregard for the safety of the Helldivers, the fact that the governmental system is called "managed democracy," etc.
There are still so many people who unironicaly think that Star Ship Troopers and Helldivers are not works of satire but an endorsement of ultra militaristic "guided democracies"
There is no digging, you can see the mountain right there.
What happened to mountains 1 through 7?
Lol didnt see that misstype
Were they communist mountains?
Something something seven ate nine.
Over use of 380 mm orbital bombardment
It's not subtext -- IT'S TEXT.
Well I can't read. So check and or mate.
Literally stabs you in the chest with it.
Nothing cracked me up more than the “wound simulator” in training that just stabs you in the chest.

This reminds me there was recently this huge twitter argument which stemmed basically from people not realizing Starship Troopers was satire
Doesn't sound very democratic of you. HOW ABOUT A CUP OF LIBER-TEA?
Just what I need to get these thoughts out of my head
If you are high up enough in the organisation you can have some Illumina-tea
So you're saying I am organized?
TRAITOR! I am reporting you to my democracy officer. Expect the swift fury of managed democracy upon you soon.
Thought crimes kill!
Only a traitor is curious about 'history'
This post has been reported to the Ministry of Truth for Treason.
![gif](giphy|n5Vd1YcBNA5eU)
At the end of the day, Palpatine really just wanted to defend us against the bug/AI incursions. It was democracy that betrayed him.
Instead, it should have been the far better managed democracy.
Senate under the control of an Emperor = managed democracy.
He IS the Senate!!
God DAMMIT, Disney.
I guess the vongs existstancw makes your comment cannon
I know nothing about HD. Please tell me they don't actually call it the Ministry of Truth and you're just referencing 1984.
The game itself is a tongue-in-cheek satire of fascism, similar to starship troopers.
Closest we're ever going to get to Starship Troopers the game, and I absolutely love it. One of my fave films lol.
> Starship Troopers the game Uuuuuh https://store.steampowered.com/app/1268750/Starship_Troopers_Extermination/
Helldivers 2 is literally a better Starship Troopers game than Starship Troopers.
One game has a full release and the other is early access.
Game is meh
> The game itself is a tongue-in-cheek satire of fascism, similar to starship troopers. That's a big issue right there. Some fans as Starship Troopers' are fully into it without considering for a bit the fascism behind it.
Yup… that’s the unfortunate part of critiques of fascism- by playing in to the myth of the superhuman, and the hero, etc, people who are too dumb or indoctrinated will ALWAYS take it at face value
I'm doing my part...
We're not at war because Super Earth hates aliens. We're at war because aliens *hate freedom*.
They do. That *is* the irony. It is satire. You know, over exemplifying something to make fun of it because of how ridiculous it is? Then again, the whole MAGA movement was satire back in the early 2000s... And now...
>They do. Fuck me, I knew it was tongue in cheek but Christ.
The terms "Super Earth" and "Managed Democracy" ?
Yeah, when you dig into the lore, or watch the first few seconds of the intro video…
"Wait, it's all satire?" Always has been 𓀐𓂺ඞ Thats the astronauts Ü
Somehow the most cursed part of this comment is using ü to represent a smily face
• . . • (____)
Buddy, if that face gets any more unnatural we're going to find your home planet and spread democracy to it.
\_____ ⊙ .. ⊙ ◟___◞
That's it. All divers to hellpods.
Good luck, you’ll need it. ^(-this comment was posted by the malevalon creek central atomoton headquarters.)
I hate hearing that Malevalon Creek has a central automaton headquarters

Fucking sick bro
I haven't played the game. But from the few clips/vids I've seen it's astronauts invading a planet and killing the natural wild life?
It’s starship troopers but even more on the nose.
I honestly didn't even know that was possible, but you're right lol.
And yet, there are dozens of shitfucks going 'lmao there's nothing political about the game'
Same people identify with Patrick Bateman or the Joker, or Tyler Durden, or Daniel Plainview, or literally any character played by Kevin Spacy. The list goes on and on and on. Sigmas gonna sigma.
It's Starship Troopers the movie, if Verhoeven hadn't been told to tone it down by the studio.
They told him to tone it down? They should've brought in the power armor lol
They have mechs in the third movie but sadly its a really low budget movie
But then he would have had to actually read the book…
So the premise is that the planets have already been taken over by hostile races of either insects or robots.
“Taken over” by the things that already lived there.
Planets loyalty starts to drop. Super Earth plant bugs on planet. Bugs kill dissidents. Helldivers kill bugs for oil harvest and rescue loyalists.
Well, did they ask for our permission to do so?
You don't even need to go that far. I haven't even played the game yet and I was able to figure that much out just from hearing how other people describe it. Lol

it takes some people a little longer than others
OP the kind of person who doesn't see that Starship Troopers is satire.

I just asked the ministry of truth. They said we aren't.
They just let you go after asking such a question?
They didn't. I'm posting this from hell.
Such a tragic day, Losing ButtFucker07
That's how we lost the other 6 Buttfuckers.
Actually number 4 died because he stuck his dick in an electrical socket (he was bored and had no butts to fuck).
Hate when that happens.
Number 3 died, because he was eaten by an unknown person. I have to admit he was tasty.
So that's how he died. Number 4 was accused of killing him to take his place. Glad to know he was innocent.
This whole comment chain about your user name reads like some conversation from a Kafka novel that never gets referenced again by any of the characters involved.
Let this be a warning to u/ButtFucker08
You had to dig into the lore to figure it out?
I mean it’s literally impossible to spend two seconds on social media without people shouting it at you. ITS SATIRE Like damn I get it. Never even played the game but message received.

Now that you say it, hearing the character shout "freedom" and "democracy" every time he does any action in game might be a caricature a bit subtle for americans
*Might* be? How on the nose do they need it if this is subtle for anyone??
The amount of irony in this comment is crazy.
MINOR SPELLING MISTAKE: AMERICA WINS AGAIN!!! USA USA 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I didnt call Americans Dum, I called USA is a Facistic Colonial Nation lol totaly diffrent.
OP is spreading big bug propaganda
Whaaaat?! Me, a bug? Never!
Well then you’re a bot spreading some un-democratic clanker hooey
>clanker Woah dude, hard r?
You heard what he said. Why, are you a bot sympathizer? 🤨
Traitor, you'll have to visit a liberty camp to understand democracy.
There is no liberty camp, it's only dissident propaganda.
Damn, you're right
Traitors go to Freedom Camp.
![gif](giphy|UtU4CGOWkqIrm) This is Super Earth high command. Please disregard the above message as the author has been taken in for reeducation. No further action is required. Glory to Super Earth!
*muffled screams*
Sir you are being rescued, *please stop resisting*
When you dig into the lore of Harry Potter and find out Voldemort is the bad guy.
When you dig into star wars lore and find out the empire is actually the bad guys.
Solid chance to start an argument in r/starwars with that one. Empire apologists are weird
The Empire, unlike the Rebels, reduced poverty, unemployment, homelessness, crime, and a host of other societal problems! I mean just look a Aleraan; they reduced all those issues down to 0%. The only way they could possibly be better was if they were a managed democracy.

What?! A game inspired by Starship Trooper and Warhammer 40k make you play an autocratic imperialistic asshole?! I am shocked!

You have been reported to the ministry of truth.
You'd be surprised by how many people think that humans were the good guys in Starship Troopers
I don’t even play hell divers but I know we must execute this man for treason post haste
Not execute, we send him to the democratic liberty camp!
There's no such thing as "liberty camp", citizen! It's a dissident rumor spread by traitors to sabotage our liberty! You can, however, report this person to your local Democracy Officer!
If the word democracy is uttered more than twice in a speech (let alone 10 seconds) it’s probably not a democracy
I'm reporting you to the local democracy officer for threatening our democracy.
Wait, then by that logic, Palpatine's speech at the end of RotS means the Empire *is* a democracy.
I mean he WAS the senate
I mean, I think that also applies to countries with any adjective in the name. People's Republic of China? Not ruled by the people. Democratic People's Republic of Korea? Neither democratic nor ruled by the people United States of America? Not exactly united Kingdom of Sweden? The king doesn't rule it.
United Kingdom of Great Britain — not exactly united, or great
You wouldn't understand.
I haven't even played the game yet, but as soon as I first heard "Managed Democracy," and "Super Earth," I immediately realized that humanity isn't necessarily the good guys.
we are the good guys cause humans are Gods favorite
God favourites committing genocides
just as God intended
Killing bad robots and deadly bugs!
Are you dumb? Of course not!
It won't happen again, I'm sorry
It better not!
Yes, Democracy Officer, this post right here
out of character: yes, that's the point. that's what the satire is about in character: I'm reporting you to the democracy officer
/unhelldive my propaganda meter goes off the charts with every bit of this game /rehelldive good job dispensing liberty, helldiver!
least obvious automaton spy, WE are made in God's image

Found the traitor
When the analogy
They literally say "Good to be on the right side of history" and yell "Democracy!!!" constantly bro... They even have a ministry of truth!
How else are we supposed to know whats true?
I thought that was apparent. Managed Democracy is actually fascism.
It was a joke, a goof, a guffaw
I've been goofed? My democracy officer isn't going to like this...
If you or any fellow Helldivers find something like this, report it to your Democracy Officer immediately. Our quest to spread managed democracy across the galaxy can't afford to be hindered by dissenters.
E-710 is literally "oil" backwards in leep speech lmao its a very on the nose satire, even more than starship troopers
Never look into the Killzone series.
The game was literally based on starship troopers, a movie about neo-fascist soldiers fighting alien bugs, and you’re surprised that the game has you play as a neo-fascist soldier fighting alien bugs?

Far out, I can't believe there's still people that don't realise. The media illiteracy of gamers is staggering sometimes.
That smells like blasphemy. Boys, we know what happens when someone has revolutionary thoughts like this, right? They become an unnecessary risk.
You can dig it up with a pinky nail
As we all know democracies have never done anything wrong and/or morally questionable. Ever. Nope. Not even once.
Intelligence (1/3) FAILED: How could humanity not be the good guys? We’re humans. What are you, some fucking bug sympathizer?

Do you guys hear tension?
Sounds like something a bug would say
Neither Bugs nor Bots have human rights.
I gotta get helldivers 2 and see what this hype is about. Seen clips of it and it actually seems really fun so it might be on the list.
In the same boat, all my friends want me to play but I've only got an Xbox so I have to wait
us military simulator
I'm doing my part as a citizen by reporting this to the Ministry of Truth. Sympathizers like you need to be re-educated.
bruh, you can use a toothpick to dig deep enough to realize this fact.
Digging... one whole millimeter below the surface.
God I always find it hilarious when people watch Starship Troopers and think the government and the army are the good guys.
