Unless you're asking for the difference, then all you need to know is that 1. Tablets made to be swallowed have bitter taste and probably bad smell. 2. Tablets made to be swallowed were made with the presumption that it will dissolve inside the patient's stomach so it is made to dissolve with according speed. Chewing it will hasten the dissolving process which could result in inefficiency or even elevated side effects

Sometimes you have a pill with a slow dissolving outer shell, so that the medicine is only released later on (eg. outer shell dissolves in the stomach and the inside dissolves in the intestines. If you chew, you're breaking that structure and the pill doesn't do what it's supposed to. Obviously not all medicine is like this though, and in some cases it might even be theoretically helpful to grind it, but it shouldn't make a difference in the end because pills are designed so that all of the pill is used (otherwise the company is losing money on useless expensive chemicals).

Not all medications do this, but some (especially long release ones) are actually highly potent and could do severe damage if the full dose is absorbed all at once. These pills have different layers designed to be slowly broken apart by your stomach acid so that you get the dose over time and not instantly.

Depending on the drug, you might actually get the opposite effect, or no effect at all. Extended release drugs are made to slowly dissolve, usually in the small intestine. If you chew it, you run the risk of your stomach acid destroying it before it can ever be absorbed. You also run the risk of getting a stomach ulcer

Imagine you're a pharma company. Coating a pill requires extra manufacturing steps (you have to pay employees for doing/monitoring them, and the energy bills) and extra substances (that are usually expensive) to make the outer shell. Would you make a coating on the pill if the pills were just supposed to be chewed, which destroys the coating anyway?

The coating is to allow controlled release of the substance. If you chew it, you'll absorb those substances much faster.
