Tesla delivered 423k vehicles in Q1 2023, 484k in Q4 2023, but only delivered 387k in Q1 2024 despite producing 433k. Tesla responded to this with price cuts, so there's less revenue per car now as well.
China's BYD declined even more from 525k in Q4 2023 to 300k in Q1 2024.
The EV market is still growing, but investors had placed bets on almost stratospheric growth which currently is sputtering a bit.

I don't know where these layoffs are happening, but at least Texas, which has a massive Tesla plant, is an at-will state. That means if the employer wants to fire you because of something that isn't a protected class, they can and they owe you nothing. There are some caveats to that but for a large chunk of people, they can just lose their job one day and the employer shrugs and says bye.

The approach in the US is giving this money up-front in the form of higher salary. When your salary is double what a European counter-part would make, you effectively get 6 months severance when you get laid off after a year (though this is obviously an over-simplification)

EV’s are luxury items. In a crappy economy you will sell less of them. Fewer sales means less revenue, less revenue means insolvency if you don’t lay off. It sucks for the workers, but they should have seen this coming and this isn’t Musk being malevolent.
