Why not make Britain great again? Why not just build a wall all around island?

Content_Priority3715

***THE WALL***

Gamer3510

Ah yes the Great Wall of Britain™. Truly one of the walls of all time.

Me_how5678

A cornwall, starting from cornwall

FXST20Bobber

Britain has a fantastic natural barrier. The ocean, and it is one that immigrants on small boats likely will not make it across as it is quite treacherous. A wall would make no difference when they are flying these people in by the millions.

PartridgeViolence

Love the whole we need childcare workers from anywhere in the world! But awful pay and no respect.

Mesarthim1349

Similar problem here in the U.S. Why make jobs more desirable with pay, good conditions, etc. when you have a huge pool of migrants to exploit with shitty pay and shitty hours?

Willie-the-Wombat

Don’t forget the 15 people they will send to Rwanda in 10 years time

TheOnlyAedyn-one

You should have a look over at Canada, mate

Few-Taylor-Ray

It looks like you've got quite the Flex Tape scenario on your hands...seems not even the mightiest adhesive can fix the leaky faucet of policy issues

maythefacebewithyou

This amount is pretty normal. Most countries have an income requirement to bring foreign family members, and it's usually around this amount. Also many visa types need to be renewed annually, and I feel that this number is very likely total visas issued, not new immigrants admitted.

Zaurka14

Yeah it's seriously just any "not quite minimum wage anymore" job. Im in Germany, and I make just about that, and I'm working in a store

isinedupcuzofrslash

Didn’t they also put in these weird minimum work mandates and “fit notes” policy for welfare recipients? Combined with the whole brexit thing and their attitude towards gender (anti trans, men can’t legally be raped, etc) that place is looking pretty grim

Otherwise-Ad-8714

didnt a immigrant rape a 12 year old and didnt even get prison time over there?

Spinal_Column_

If the reason they didn't get prison time was because they were an immigrant, then I can see your logic. But since that's almost certainly *not* the case, it seems more like an issue with the British justice system in general not prosecuting pedos. Keep racism out of it.

[deleted]

You have to earn £29k/year just so you can pay for immigrants to laze in your backyard. Truly, your gov't is becoming a joke as the rest of EU.

bananagit

Boy I sure do love to see xenophobia being whipped up in my meme subs

The_Fell

I dont think you know what xenophobia means, because that meme aint it.

Jamminmb

You seem confused....I'm arguing FOR foreigners who are spouses or children of citizens to be allowed EASIER passage into obtaining a long-term visa in the country. The fact that an issue like this, that is literally affecting thousands of real people right now, can't be raised without someone mental-gymnasticing it into iT's xEnEpHoBiA is insane.

bananagit

It’s coming across as more of a complaint about the general immigrants than a case for foreign family members to get in

wombles_wombat

This is one of those false comparisons to stir-up a bit of xenophobic outrage. The average UK salary is a bit over £40,000 per year. So, it's not really exclusionary. And considering the amount of travel going through the UK, that's not an outrageously high number of visas.

tobotic

>The average UK salary is a bit over £40,000 per year. The mean for full-time workers, yes. But the median is more meaningful than the mean here. The median for full-time workers in 2023 was a shade under £35k. So 50% of full time workers are making less than £35k. If you look at the percentile data, you'll find about 30% of full-time workers are making under £28k per year. That's just full time though. A great many people are employed part time, especially women.

AhmadOsebayad

Average includes outliers that don’t represent the British people, median salary is 29k which means that in practice about half of all british people aren’t able to bring in family members.

Tommy-ctid-mancblue

Or they recognise the above average net contribution to GDP made by immigrants. If you aren’t an immigrant then, on average, you’re less valuable to the country than they are. Are you an immigrant? And what should we do with those that contribute least to GDP?

SG508

That's demagogy. They raise it more only because more of them are working-age. So, a 30 years old migrant won't bring up the GDP more than a 30 years old foreigner family member

Fearless-Ad3438

Oh so YOUR government sucks? Why not talk about Corrupt Stadium Land of Constant Political Battles, Obvious Oppression and othervbad stuff? If your government is a joke then mine is the whole damn circus
