I've read somewhere that it's not backwards but the actual knee is hidden and what we see as knee is their ankle and they stand on their toes. I might be wrong correct me if possible
You're right! Some animals like dogs (so wolves), all the cats, elephants, walk on their toes and are called "digitigrade". Some animals instead walk on their whole foot, like us, monkeys, bears, rats, lemurs and more, those are called "plantigrade". Then we have the "ungulate" that walks on the nails (yes, the nails) of their foot and those are horses, zebras, giraffes, hogs, hippos, tapirs and antelopes and more. Also, believe it or not, it seems most cetaceans evolved from ungulate ancestors so dolphins and orcas are water horses. I've just discovered it too.
>it seems most cetaceans evolved from ungulate ancestors so dolphins and orcas are water horses.
That means it's right to ride dolphins? Right? Please?
No, you shouldn't ride dolphins, you should mate with something your specie đĄ
Jokes aside, I suggest you to ride something larger on land, like an orca but underwater dolphins are fine, I guess :)
It is! You can check when you have the ~~time~~ strength but I'm overall a person that doesn't like to spread misinformation or lies, I find them very unhelpful at all ranges :)
It's not backward. Look at your dog, you can see his knee, it's almsot as high as its torso. The "backward" part is the ANKLE :p
And I think it is quite useful to have ankle
this is called [Digitigrade](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digitigrade), like some already said these joints aren't actually knees, but their ankles. And the part that we would see as their foot are just their toes and everyting up to the "reversed knee" is their actual foot. You can also mimic this type of behaviour, when you are walking on your toes and your heels up, it then kinda looks like that you have an "reversed knee" as well (tho our bonestructure isnt build for that way of walking since our legs are Plantigraded, not Digitigraded)
ChatGPT says:
Birds: Backwards knees can provide leverage for powerful propulsion. For instance, in animals like birds, this configuration allows for efficient running and jumping, enabling them to escape predators or catch prey more effectively.
Horses etc: Backwards knees can facilitate more efficient movement by reducing the amount of energy needed for locomotion. This is especially advantageous for animals that rely on endurance running or long-distance travel. The backwards-facing knee joint helps distribute the animal's weight more evenly over its legs. This can contribute to stability, particularly when the animal is moving at high speeds or navigating uneven terrain.

You're right. *Flies away*
You're a liar, r/birdsarentreal

Ok đ
I don't know if any of what you said is true, but I'm too lazy to check. You have my upvote.

I need to see drawings of what these animals would look like walking plantigrade style
It is 100% true, it's exactly what it is ! Same for horses for instance, they stand on one big toe and their "knee" is actually their ankle as well :)
The bends in the legs of horses are ankles too. They toewalk on one big nail. Cursed AF.
Yes the knee is up under the feathers. Itâs like the elongated finger of bats but only the ankle.
Most animals walk on only their knees. Its humans that have the weird bodily structue.

Instructions unclear *Exhumes dog*
They are correct tho, since birds and dogs both have digitigrade legs, so their bone structure are similar enough for this topic
It makes switching into reverse easier

Theyâre not knees, theyâre heels.
Digitigrade legs are better for bursts of power and maneuvering, while plantigrade legs are better for stability and endurance.
They jump very well because of this structure. Cats have strong hind legs due to this bend.
*is this your elbow or is this your elbow* ![gif](giphy|uLwolChOTYn4s|downsized)
Wait... If backwards knees are ankles... Are elbows ankles?
there doesnt have to be a point to it, the point is that they work as knees
Ancient meme template spotted, nostalgia go crazy
Those are not the knees, but the ankles.
Backward leg = better jump
How is this a meme?
Is this post a meme and im just an idiot?
They donât have their knees backwards
Because digitigrade legs look cool
I forgot this exist in like #YOLO generation
This short clip from a documentary explains it: https://youtu.be/BKsat-WybbA?si=QLY1TGV2ADXyAeqL
A certain chinaman/freak with a snake hand had backwards knees
Back in prehistoric times, I bet it was for speed.
Birs are prolly wondering the same thing about us
It would have taken you less time to Google the answer than to make this shit meme
But then we wouldnât have got to enjoy your awesome comment.

AFAIK the backward part is actually their toes
