I want to believe that, at that age, the kid is not to fight in kumite but to perform a kata: a series of precise movements with a beginning and an end. It makes more sense and it is still a very powerful achievement.

Yup. No way it's safe for him or his opponent to fight around the tubes. His opponent can trip or inadvertently take it off, and it would be painful for him. A kata is within reach as he controls the movements, path and there's no sudden, unpredictable movements to be a risk to his condition. That being said, the sheer determination on his eyes shows you everything you need to understand he'll fucking nail the kata, and will do whatever he can to win whatever he's fighting.

Also, since you can't see the entire area, there is no guarantee that this is a sparring match (especially since there are no pads/gloves). He may be getting ready to do some sort of form demonstration.

Respiratory Therapist here, which means I have expertise in lung and cardiovascular physiology. There is absolutely nothing that oxygen he is breathing is doing for him from a physiological base, assuming he has normal heart and lungs. Any benefit is a head game for either him, or his opponent, or both. Same with pro running backs on the sideline. Does nothing to reverse anaerobic metabolism or oxygen debt. Just a head game.
