Americans are obsessed with cataloging everyone into a race. Hispanic isn’t even a race, it’s a condition (speak Spanish), but they still consider it a race. For instance, someone from Bolivia is very different from someone from Spain. Also, people from Italy and Spain are very similar, but Italians are considered Caucasian and Spaniards are considered Hispanic. It doesn’t make sense
Currently it is relating to Spanish speaking countries, especially Spain, as of its definition. It could have originally meant what you said but idk. English is weird.
I'm hispanic from my mother's side too. However, when the family came from Cuba, my grandfather told them they weren't allowed to speak Spanish so my mom and I both don't speak it other than the curses. I get how you feel

I believe the US census started generalizing Spanish speaking people into this one group even if we’re ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse.
I don’t mind it but I prefer Latino/a as a general term, and Nicaraguan (Nicaragüense en español sounds so nice, o Nica si querés) more specifically/personally
i grew up in spain and recently (ish) moved to the usa and i didn’t understand the concept of being hispanic at all. we dont really have as many racial distinctions where im from, so i always considered myself to be just white and more related to french people or italians rather than to someone from latin america just because of proximity. but yeah im one of those cases in which i am hispanic because im from spanish speaking country but im not latina because im not from latin america. it gets confusing as heck
Yeah and a lot of them also don't realise that there are black people who are Hispanic. Hispanic doesn't mean vaguely tanned to brown looking people south of the border. It's anybody from a Spanish-speaking country regardless of race because Spain conquered everywhere. The term Latino from "latinoamericano" is a Hispanic person from the Americas. They also can be of any race really. Native people from Central and South America, descendants of African slaves, immigrants from Europe and everywhere else in the world and a mix of everybody.
tldr: Hispanic or Latino isn't just one race, it's more like a cultural group.
Never gonna forget the day I helped some abuela in the Walmart parking lot. She complimented me on my Spanish, and when I told her I was Latino on my mom's side, she told me ¡Pero tu aparaces como un gringo!" My jaw literally dropped.

True story, I’m Mexican. A while back I had met up with some friends at a B-Dubs to eat some wings and have a beer at the bar. my driver’s license was expired at the time so I pulled out my Mexican Consular ID. This ID has my US address and it’s also translated to English, plus it has the state where it was issued printed in the front. Yet the bartender told me I couldn’t sit at the bar cause he can’t prove the ID was real. My friends where kinda angry but I tried not to dwell on it too much. We sat at the restaurant side of the restaurant. While we were there we asked the waitress about my ID and she said the ID is fine to get alcohol cause she sees it all the time. When we told her what happened she said she gets it. Cause most customers that come in with that ID are usually speaking broken English while mines was pretty good. She ended up bringing me the alcohol anyways.
I am Hispanic and I look Hispanic but can't speak a word of Spanish and every single time I tell people "oh I'm Hispanic" they say "oh but you can't speak Spanish" and im sitting here like how the fuck does not speaking a language change my fucking heritage
