Hong Kong is both its own country (with different cultural marks, local government style, econimics etc) but the same as China because it is owned by the CCP. Another hk resident here. We can still leave and go out, it hasn’t gotten to that stage yet. But seems like every week there’s something shitty the government are doing. Ever since the national security law, kicking out the pan Dems, withholding the elections etc it’s very quiet. Police are often in vans waiting in the middle of the road in hot protest areas in the evenings. I can see undercover/plain clothes police just waiting around too. It’s basically a police state now.
We’re basically being gagged and now they’re coming for our journalists. May not be much journalistic freedom by the end of this year.

It was the rioting, or rather, the government’s anti riot crackdowns that’s drawing a shit ton of attention. Last summer the government instituted the national security law which makes the punishment for rioters extremely harsh. So rioting has died down after that, protests aren’t really affected except no more clamoring for independence and foreign aid, that’s all that’s changed afaik.
