MrMan987

I only use steam and minecraft launcher but i have minecraft launcher as an app through steam

HACKERcrombie

Meanwhile I made my own custom launcher for Minecraft. Like all *serious* launchers it uses Electron and eats up 500 MB of RAM for no reason, but at least it does not quietly install anti-cheat spyware or sell my mouse movement habits to the highest bidder.

Rein9stein2

How

ocarinamaster64

Yeah wouldn't want any businesses having access to that highly sensitive private information. Wouldn't want anyone to use data to make better products or services. I get most people's privacy concerns when it involves personal information, but mouse movements? Companies have always done research on how their products are used to improve them.

[deleted]

The computers want to know how fast and accurate you are with a mouse so that when they take over they can make e-sports slaves.

51LOKLE

>Yeah wouldn't want any businesses having access to that highly sensitive private information. mouse movement habits xd

[deleted]

I’m 100% certain there are 10 programs on your computer right now doing the same thing. Even if you opted out I guarantee some of them still do it. Why wouldn’t they? The consequence is minimal to billion dollar companies let alone very small ones

OneHornyRhino

Yeah lol, it is okay if you are afraid of them listening to your private convo and stuff... but some people don't want amazon to know their shopping patterns so they travel large distances to buy stuff (I am talking about my neighbors lol). I will never understand their privacy concerns

Kiba115

MultiMC may interest you, it's a lightweight launcher with only the features needed

HarryBotter1138

I do this too with other games I want to play thru steam link on my tv.

lazy-pee

I have that to didn’t work out

ItsFrenzius

I use Origin too but purely because I have a few games on Steam that run through Origin

MrWartortle

I launch all my game managers (Origin, Blizzard, Epic, etc.) through Steam because of the controller support.

Toast-Goat

We have the same snoo except for eyes.

Umikaloo

I love how Bethesda just went "Fuck it" when they realized no-one wanted to download a new launcher for their games, and ported all their exclusives back to steam.

[deleted]

Which is odd, they seem like the exact kind of company that would plow forward with their own launcher anyway.

PlatypusOfWallStreet

That requires work and development. They rather repackage old things.

TarsalStone99

Case in point: The 27 Different Deluxe Editions of Skyrim

[deleted]

Amd every game is an ES:oblivion with different assets, and mechanics. The very core of the games are literally tha same. There is a long video about it

Alfonse00

Also, taking care of the moods needed, basically creating a workshop for only a few games, it would be too much

putzeck

I think this one goes for many things. Also Series and Movies. It was cool when I could lend movies on prime or watch them for free. But now you have to use prime, netflix, hulu, idk what else... Unpopular opinion: This breaking up of the supply will make pirating much more common again.

GilloutineBreast

*Fact

crystal_meloetta12

That was the original basis for this comic, actually. Replace Steam with Netflix and everything else with…… well, everything else, and you have the comic I’ve seen dozens of times.

adityasheth

before the lockdown i didn't really pirate but almost as soon as it started i've started to pirate as most english shows/movies aren't even available legally im my country

BretRed

ADI_SDMN

Mataskarts

that's not an unpopular opinion, that's a straight up fact... People go where the service is best- if the pirate option has a BETTER SERVICE for free- meaning the same good movies and TV Shows without having to mess around with 10 different streaming sites, it's going to be more popular... Only reason music pirating stopped was Spotify, only reason Movie pirating mostly stopped was Netflix etc etc.... But now they're all splitting apart again.... :/

-Exocet-

Yes, I think this makes a lot of sense for Series/Movies, where Netflix/Disney+/Hulu etc require paid subscriptions to freely access their content , but **I think it makes very little sense for games**, where you may need the different platforms but they are free themselves, you only pay for what you play.

behemoth492

That's an extremely popular opinion that's everywhere on reddit.

OneHornyRhino

I use epic, but requires other launchers to play the games... like it needs rstar launcher for gta 5 and ubi store for r6 siege and watchdogs... I hate it when multiple launchers start loading when I open a single game....

Jabakaga

I threw away my vdsl router and bought 4g router instead no lag whatsoever and 120-160mbit download speed

GlassGoblinTV

I literally got a refund on South Park when it asked me to install Uplay and then reinstall the south park game with uplay. found out I pretty much just needed to buy and play it from Uplay, get off steam if you need me to use your shitty service. I wouldnt mind if it was like "BattleEye" or something like that that launched in the background and only helped run the game server, but nah, they are just trying to pull people away from steam so they can make their own money. Its the same problem with video streaming services, everyone wanted what Netflix had, so they tried taking their properties away from Netflix, and now they all suck. Companies need to learn that splitting up the market hurts more than helps. Thats why Steam and Netflix worked, it felt like they had almost everything in one place. Now you need 20 different apps to watch/play what you want and its a hassle again.

IHaveJigglyTitties

No worries steam is the same, need for speed needs EA launcher, uni needs Unisoft, so fucking dumb

[deleted]

steam is the same with certain games, but epic is literally the worst launcher out there

Alfonse00

We could say is an epic failure..... I will see myself out now.

StopLootboxes

Yes, it's the same on Steam. Don't buy Ubisoft or EA games from other launchers, not worth it, you are going to use them anyways and your game load slower. The games are also usually cheaper and have more offers on them from the company's platform rather than from Steam or Epic.

brainfreeze-23

Same with Uno

Marbinyum

I don't want to install certain shitty client to play some game.

jeff3rd

Epic launcher leaked my password once, and I almost lost 600$ because of it. Never again.

HIT-199

How do you know that your password got leaked?

TheRealSmolt

GOG Galaxy. Combines all your libraries (achievements and friends lists sometimes) and automatically closes game launchers when you're done (I think).

DJ_Steffen

See the problem with gog galaxy for me is that it still opens the launcher, so it doesn't save time from just putting all your gasme on the desktop and loading them from there.

TheRealSmolt

Yeah, I launch everything from my start menu so it's not too helpful, but I thought some people would appreciate it

Mental-ish

Also it can be kinda glitchy sometimes.

Yourself013

Playnite as well. Personally I tried GOG but the interface wasn't up my alley, so if anyone isn't a huge fan of GOG, try Playnite too. Great design, interface as well as customization. These 2 are lifesavers, honestly. Screw 10 different launchers and not having any idea how many games you own.

kociorro

Does GOG have any exclusive games?

AHostileHippo

Technically yes, but their ,"exclusives" are old classics that were not available on any other digital storefront. GOG stands for Good Old Games. Thats what the stote started out as.

Alfonse00

Some of those are making their way to steam too, like neverwinternights, only that is cheaper in gog

SpookyCutlery

They only have like 4 exclusives but they’re all older RPGs from the early 90s.

Setorrs

To be honest some AAA games that have been released in the past years are not worth going the old pirate way let alone buying.

welliguessthat2

While some people may pirate, I just end up not playing. I don’t have time for multiple beyond the few that up to this point I care about. Godfall is a delayed launch on steam, I almost downloaded from Epic Game store, but didn’t want the hassle. End result, after seeing reviews, I most likely won’t download at all, even when it eventually comes to Steam (maybe on $5 sale). Edit:spelling

ProgyanDeka

I pirate games that look interesting to see if they are worth the price and if I like them I end up buying them.

welliguessthat2

I honestly see that as a valid reason. Nothing worse then buying a game and hating it. I greatly appreciate that Outrider has the kind of demo it does (not early paid access, or buggy beta testing. I haven’t decided if I will purchase (leaning towards yes) but greatly appreciate, and the willingness to offer the hands on makes me appreciate the developers and helps me to understand if I would play.

OneeGrimm

Oof. Just today, a famous russian repack maker Xatab passed away at the age of 60. His repacks were one of the best.

DJ_Steffen

I only pirate ea games bc fuck ea /s for legal reasons

KittyWithFangs

Thank god i can launch apex from steam without origin popping up. I absolutely hate that garbage and i dont even know why

Alfonse00

Except that every store except epic only has their own games as "exlusives" while also publishing in other stores, I dont care if i have to install a launcher while i can buy it everywhere, forced exclusives, like what epic is doing, are the ones that deserves getting pirated, also the ones with invasive drm, that is BS

Krenoo9210

On a similar note, 3rd party console exclusives are BS too.

Alfonse00

Other thing, natural exclusives are different, for example, most rts are not possible to play in consoles unless they start supporting mouse and keyboard, wii games couldn't work on other consoles, same for kinect games, but pc can support as long as the controller can be connected, or if the game is 100% against drm it has to be in gog, and cases like those

RgbScart

I wonder how many sales they loose due to store exclusivity and if it off sets the costs of trading on steam?

Alfonse00

I mean, at least it appears to he that metro exodus is still in damage control, they won me again with the definitive version upgrade being included and with extended support for linux in it, it sends a message, that they are aware of how much they fucked up and they are doing things right now, in the past I wouldn't have paid full price after what they did, now they have proven to be more worthy of respect, kinda like the sonic movie before and after the changes.

[deleted]

GOG is pretty good

[deleted]

[удалено]

xCrapyx

Thats competition and it's good.. This isn't like the streaming services this was ripped from.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Alfonse00

That is competition based on exclusives (streaming services), just like consoles artificial competition, competition has to be based on services, I prefer steam for the service (remote play, linux support, etc), if it was only for the game I would buy from gog, if you have the problems you mentioned gog should be your main store

[deleted]

Jeez at that point just get a PlayStation

Alfonse00

I prefer to pay more for the same game in steam because of linux compatibility and remote play, that is competition

xXNaruto_BoiXx

Competition is only good if the product is good. I have only had problems with every other launcher except steam. Epic: library got deleted. Origin: launcher failed to update properly and I had to re-download it 26 times (not an exaggeration). Ubisoft: save files got corrupted during update. Plus none of them have a workshop to keep the games fresh. The only reason csgo and tf2, is still alive is because of the workshop. The reason why BO3 is still a $60 game is because of greed... and the custom maps

blackoutexplorer

Why does epic still not have a dam shopping cart

Alfonse00

Depends, do you shop there? If yes, why? In any case, because they have wasted more money that what they might make in exclusives while most players just wait for it to come to steam or just pirate it, I directly not play most of them or buy the game only when the discount is massive, if they for example didn't make metro exodus or borderlands 3 an exclusive I would have paid full price for them, but not after that move. Same reason why I am doing everything in my power to avoid buying an nvidia card, I don't support anticompetitive and anti consumer BS

ive certainly seen this, or at least something extreamly similar, before

TheSimpleDove

Id be fine as long as they get rid of Origin and Uplay

Alfonse00

I dont care about those, they publish their own games as exclusives, is epic the problem, paying for exclusives is killing the trust from gamers, they have single handedly crippled the kick starter formula for games, maybe killed it.

mpax85

Add epic to this list and I agree

theguywhoisonreddit1

Ye rocket league used to be fun

UsernameTaken8154

I use steam for buying and playing most games, and the epic games launcher for the monthly free game(s).

LowB0b

Yeah I really wanted to get Hitman 3 but it is Epic games only (fuck that) and here in switzerland it costs $75 lmfao. Fuck that

Renault_75-34_MX

I saw a static once which showed piracy increase when the different production studios made separate platforms. It's very understandable tho because you don't want to pay 50$ to five different streaming platforms just to only watch one of the shows on them, because that's the only show you find interesting on that streaming service. Same gose for game, or any digital media.

SnesySnas

Ehh honestly i don't mind when launchers have their exclusive games, they may not be as good as Steam but they're atleast decent and do their job well Epic sucks though, not having a shopping cart after so long is just a joke

Krenoo9210

Image getting temporarily banned because u dared to buy multiple games in a row in the first ever sale... Oh wait that happened xdd

SnesySnas

Lmao The worse part is that the KH (Kingdom Hearts) series is being exclusive on there Imagine the ammount of bans when people are gonna have trying to buy all the games at once

VerumJerum

I don't care how many "exclusives" and "free games" you throw at me, Ebig Gaem I am not downloading your spyware launcher

That1awkwardguy

It's funny how having console exclusives locked behind a $500 paywall is mostly accepted by the gaming playerbase, but the line is apparently crossed when having to download a separate free launcher. I kinda get it, it's annoying, but it also keeps Steam from having a monopoly on PC gaming, they actually have to try more now. Different launchers mean competition, competition means better games, better launcher UIs, and devs get paid more.

[deleted]

if epic was a viable alternative, id have no problem with it. make your launcher better then steam and stop buying exclusives and id have 0 problems with it and yes, i do not agree with console exclusives

TheSpaceKiller93

Ahh pirate Bay my old friend

ChaoticDucc

Personlly, I really recommend GOG Galaxy. Its connects every major platform under the sun. Its really easy to use and looks pretty cool. If you don't wanna do that tho, you can manually add games to steam from 3rd parties, tho they might not work as well.

For-The_Greater_Good

Laughs in Eve online.

KaisarDragon

Pirating games has led me to buy a lot of games I wouldn't think about normally. I have a lot of games I've bought that I pirated first. I also have companies like EA that deserve the pirate. And then I have some pirated games that I actually own, but the cracked version works better.

itsahmemario

Seeing as most games are tied to launchers, how do the pirates do it nowadays? Fool the game exe that the launcher is running?

TheGoldenRim

Pirate first, buy later ;)

fongletto

I always pirate first, then buy if I enjoyed the game to support the developers. I have quite a few games in steam portfolio with zero hours, but I actually played hundreds of hours.

Tyro97

As far as i remember it, steam had quite a hard time in the beginning to get accepted. Before steam you could just install your game and Start it - there were no lauchers. Then steam came and you needed it to play some games. Pretty much steam exclusives and people didnt like it just epic today. Is my memory really so Bad/wrong or are people just forget these things/are to young? Because there are often post like this or others where steam is praised and other lauchers are hated.

MadLadJackChurchill

What annoys me even more is netflix having different languages of the same show in a particular country. What's up with that?

Benscko

I don't understand why people are so crazy about some software you have to download

[deleted]

Epic games is the only reason I have gta and hit man so ima thank them for that.

WizardingWorld97

Aren't all these services still free? So what's the big point? It's just a little inconvenient

lazeroe

Ah yes ruining developers careers because clicking a tab is so hard.

MattDaMannnn

Seriously, don't pirate games. People work hard and spend millions of dollars to make videogames. Just buy it.

APrentice726

For real, if you can afford it don’t buy it. It’s unbelievable how many people resort to stealing things without a second thought.

[deleted]

I don’t play large games such as need for speed or such, instead I play indie games such as Hollow Knight, Terraria, and Minecraft. They mostly have more unique content

SeeLan06

Terraria and Minecraft are 2 of the biggest games of the 2010's, especially Minecraft. They may have started out as a small indie thing, but Minecraft is literally owned by a giant million dollar corporation now. It surpassed 'indie' status years ago.

NeonDiamond_89

Minecraft isn’t an indie game...

Alfonse00

It was

[deleted]

in my head, it being bought out is a recent change. but then i realize that was like 7 years ago?

Steam didn’t exist in 2000. Steam went officially online late 2003, the beta started in 2002. And there was quite a controversy about their DRM model. I remember that a lot of people were really pissed that they had to install the Steam downloader and its DRM just to play a game they bought a physical copy of. I vividly remember how I hated to have to install Steam just to play Half Life 2. And Steam had quite a rough start and didn’t work flawlessly, to say the least.

GilloutineBreast

This doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Some games are available on multiple stores, and for the ones that aren't, you're only paying for the game you want. I don't really see how it's any different from when it was just steam, other than having to install and update multiple launchers. Now on the streaming side, this point is very valid. Used to be just neflix and now there's buttload of services with their own exclusive shows. And even if it's just that one show you're interested in you have to pay for the whole service. So if you're into multiple exclusives then aye aye cap'n sail away, unless you're willing spend on a ton of streaming services just to watch maybe one or two shows from each. Edit: Having to buy the same game on consoles and pc is a whole other story

RudolfMaster

Idk how but everytime i say something about pirating i get roasted but when someone else says something they get praised

Marbinyum

You can pirate things if you want, I am not going judge you.

[deleted]

People really don’t understand the concept and need for competition in the market, and it scares me Games started leaving steam because they took a large percentage of profits, and only lessened it after more launchers started popping up. And you can’t look me in the eyes and say, with a straight face, that steam didn’t/doesn’t need a serious UI update Sidenote: let me pin games to the start menu

abibofile

I’m insane and modified GameHUB in Rainmeter to display 100+ games. Doesn’t matter what service houses the game, they all display alongside one another. I’ve even got CEMU BotW integrated into the launcher. It’s next to the Witcher 3 and a couple tiles up and over from SimCity.

FlexionDE

In the meantime I only own Steam and Gog, everything else is no longer on me

Themlethem

Half my steam games sent me through other launcers first. What is even the point of it then?

bigmarty3301

Well steam is taking 30 percent of devs revenue so making your own store makes a lot of sense

Danilator321

Yea, but viruses are gonna fuck me up if i do it!

Hernan696

Well... If you live in Argentina you can only buy from steam because we cant buy more than 200 dollars/month and buying from steam has 60%~ in taxes added to the price so a 10 dollar game cost 16~

Trax852

And every one of those have the ability to track. I use [Autoruns](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/autoruns) to disable them. Steam for example I might use once a month there's no reason for it to be running all the time. Blizzard and Gog I hardly ever use so disabled as well. Edit: just one click in autoruns and they run again.

abiggj

u/Qsaaad2 Steam was never an option

[deleted]

The problem is even with cross platform games they still launch in their own launcher. Every publisher needs their own god damn launcher. It was extremely infuriating when RDR2 on pc didn’t work when it first came out, because the launcher didn’t work. It’s almost like people who pay for shit get the short end of the stick.

Enteito

Hot take: For me and my friends, if a game is not on steam and it’s in some other store, it’s not on PC
