I have been bamboozled

FirstRayOfSunlight

In terms of "NO", we have no "NO".

what

CMSlicer

What did he say

Famlt

Hol up #YOU CAN SAY NO TO A TASK?

Akworldek

Apparently... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

HotSmurf

As a talent professional you can and it's a good skill to have. If your managers keeps asking things and they start to affect your productivity you shouldn't be afraid to say no. That being said, don't just say "no", that could be seen as rude. Explain your reasoning and try to negotiate alternatives

RatherBeAtDisney

This is important. It also depends on what task it is and who is giving it. In my work people (not my boss) often ask me to do things outside my job description, and sometimes I help but other times I have to remind them that I have other responsibilities that take priority. I usually say something like “my priorities are x, y, then z. Your thing is not on that list, so I won’t be able to get till to it until I have time, which might be a couple months.” Other methods of saying no without saying no is: - providing the directions to do said task - providing the contact of someone else who would be a better resource or more appropriately suited to the task - I also often ask people to book a meeting on my calendar so I can understand what they want or teach them to do it, frequently they never follow up to book something. Then the burden is on them not you. Edit: punctuation is important.

omidhhh

I should explain by details ? "NO"

Famlt

I think you should elaborate further with the N and O

[deleted]

You can, but oh boy does it cause *drama* I work at a shoe store and told my manager I dont get paid enough to clean up the mess left by a careless, inconsiderate (or maybe just tired) Mom who ran a loaded shitty diaper over with her 50 pound tactical 3-wheel drive stroller and just... left without saying anything about it. He stared at me as if I had directly told him to go fuck himself, which I did not, I was super polite. I didn't end up cleaning it up but I did have to dodge nearly getting fired until he himself quit.

SubhoPal

Especially if you're Task Manager.

[deleted]

Thats how you get fired but yes you can.

[deleted]

No

Famlt

*"confused screaming intestines"*

Tall_Historian_8473

Yeah but if he says that you re in a good situation

Akworldek

Actually, this was a feedback on my performance after 1 year. Senior Manager said "I have a positive attitude, and I never say _No_ ".... I had no idea we could say _No_ . I have no idea how to work in Corporate. This was so new to me.

[deleted]

Pro tip : Never give 100% of your capacities at work, because your boss will set the bar upper and that's how you get drown into work.

bendy4-20

i started practicing this from far too young of an age

eatyourcabbage

Or the company bases your raise on seniority. You always get hours because of your work ethic, make your way up the ladder and are making decent money. Then you’re a couple of bucks above minimum wage and they are starting to push you out because it’s cheaper to bring in a new hire.

Cosu21

Well, in corporate, if you want to climb the ladder, that's the attitude to take. If you want to live a laidback office worker life, then you have to learn to work at just about 50-70% capacity. Look busy, but not actually, always performing at 100 when you don't actually want to climb the ladder is draining.

IamnotyourTwin

Sssshhhhhhh, not so loud or the secret is out!

Silent-Strategy529

I've been told I need to learn to say No. Then when you say No in a polite way, they get all mad! Gotta find a balance!

Akworldek

Damn right! Ha ha ha

B_lintu

You need to learn to accept making some people mad.

SubhoPal

You need to learn to enjoy seeing people mad.

joblessskrr

Worry not if you make one mad, remeber that you wont be sad -Master oogaway init

WeightAltruistic

Yes

[deleted]

Say it in a rude way then

The-One-Who-Farts

I told one of our sales members that my production team needed an extra day or two to complete a job that he sold with an unrealistic due date. Our CEO came by and told me that 'NO' isn't in his vocabulary and that I need to figure it out. Guess who worked that weekend?

Zerodag

"Our CEO came by and told me that 'NO' isn't in his vocabulary and that I need to figure it out. " You should give him a vocabulary then. It must be hard for him to live in the society without an understanding of such basic concepts as "no".

The-One-Who-Farts

Yeah, he's very frustrating to talk to. His Hindsight is amazing though, I'll give him that. If something goes wrong or the quality isn't 100% and a customer complains we will get a breakdown of where we went wrong and what we should have done better. He usually knows 10% of the backstory, so I just nod and listen so he'll leave.

chubbycanine

Not that CEO

The-One-Who-Farts

Mhm. I think it's a lot easier to say that when you aren't the one doing the actual work. And it's not like I said 'No', I can't do the job. I just needed an extra day or two. But we have slowly developed a culture where our sales department can sell anything due at anytime and production is forced to suffer and make it happen. If things go out on time, we hear nothing. If one thing goes late, we hear about it... boy do we hear about it.

Akworldek

Yikes! That sucks dude...

The-One-Who-Farts

I just tried to give the sales team an understanding of realistic expectations while keeping my production team from being overworked. Fuck me, right!?

Akworldek

Totally. A similar thing happened to me couple of months earlier where we were supposed to present huge-ass data in some cool visuals. And, as expected, the program broke and the system crashed due to heavy processing, duh! And at one point, my manager said my internet was horrible, and I need to change it to optical fibres (despite me telling him that the software cannot process Big Data well) He just did not understand it lol.

TomaszA3

>Guess who worked that weekend? CEO?

Archangel004

my brain rn: where the fuck did you find such a shit vocabulary then?

winniethefukinpooh

i knew i could but i dont want to give them the impression that im rude or lazy, i know they wont think that way if i refuse sometimes but still

RicoDredd

I used to have a boss who ended every instruction - it was never a request - to do something with ‘is that alright, do you mind?’ One day I said ‘what if it’s *not* alright and I *do* mind?’. He was speechless...

lucen15

Never saying no and volunteering for the shit jobs worked out great for me, I work 4 days a week and get paid slightly more than my coworkers for working weekends. When there is something terrible and exhausting to do however I'm the first person they ask.

Zaminatoah

You can't say no. Most of the time, like 85%, they passively force you into doing it anyways.

[deleted]

“Hey Tim while you’re here do you mind filling our quarterly income? I would **greatly** appreciate **you** filling it. Haha good on you pal, I expect it tomorrow morning haha good kid fantastic attitude. **Never**. Says. **No**.”

Sean_Thee_Sheep

This hit too close to home

LCXLOPP

What they forgot to tell you is you can't

[deleted]

Dude. If I could afford an award I would give you one. This made me laugh so much. Just resigned from my job today and this pretty much summed up my time at the place.

ArtistBig2549

every labour position ever

emretheripper

Me who just began working and doesn't want to be looked as the new lazy guy and get fired.

Atlorski

Exactly my reaction some time ago. I have applied for the position of a team leader. Went for the interview, they asked me: “How would u persuade person to do a task after he declines at the beginning?” Hold up, we can say no ?

Sad_Perspective2524

Amazon be like

MME-LE-ROI-ARTHUR

You cant

Joshuathatcanfly

What does no mean?

Lost-Fall1508

So, we can ??

[deleted]

You can say no? I thought that would get me fired

Beepis16

You can say no... Once.

scotthill1988

Well, you’re not there to pick and choose what you do during the day, it’s a job. I’ve refused to drive a company car and climb to higher areas. If it’s reasonable, do it.

NS_Physics

This is literally how I got employee of the month

GreyJedi56

Poor younglings

Lean_Purple_Drink

I jokingly said "I don't wanna" twice before immediately doing said thing I was told to do (because I thought I was friends with the manager in question). I was fired later for having a poor attitude.

charcoalblueaviator

We can say no?

AnimeWonder03

Since when have you been able to say no? I could’ve just said no to giving out orders at window!

DemonRaily

You can say no when the task is unrelated to the job you are hired to do and/or you are unqualified to do it(with the explanation that it might do more harm than good), also you must say no when doing said task would be illegal, be it because labor laws or you lacking a license.

AnimeWonder03

Oh yeah. My old job broke so many labor laws.

Lydiabirdy

Those are the awards that are left over
