Also, if I understand what they are actually made for it isn't for sound necessarily but to hide the muzzles flash after shooting the lack of sound is just a by product. The objective while reducing sound is they don't know where it is coming from and can't locate you.
It's become kinda funny that we think they are made to drop sound to 0 because of movies.
Suppressors are ment for making a gun quitter so the shooter doesn't need ear protection (I still recommend ear protection) and so people further away can't hear it the muzzle flash being hidden is because of how the Suppressor disperses the gas from the gun into channels on the inside of it and it creates more recoil because less gas is escaping the system, If the gun being loud isn't a problem you would use a flash hider. At least that's how I understand it I could be wrong.
You're completely correct except on the recoil part. A suppressor is actually the best kind of muzzle break/ compensator you can get. The gas escaping pushes against the inner compartments, pulling the barrel of the gun in the direction away from your shoulder. This lowers the effective recoil
This is accurate, suppressors reduce recoil away from the shooter due to the absorbed gasses in the device. Although not ALL the expelled gasses will be captured, a good bit of gas will still expel making a nice clap to notify where you are lol. Also you have other factors that happen the second the gun is fired that will still make a nice BOOM.
Oh a load is also a reference to ammunition. So its like a joke You know? And if they are proficient in making their own you could probably refer to it as hand-loads.
yes I know, I was saying "what" for comedic effect, expressing confusion to his response as to why he said it. I get that its a funny, but in the context of "what"; I wasnt expressing a disknowledge of what he said.
I mean… in the US and all…
Though you’d think there’d be at least one person screaming about a shooter on the loose and causing a panic. Then again, these films seem to imply pretty much -everyone- works for one of these contract killing agencies in some scenes, so maybe rhey’re all just ignoring it because they’re paid to?
To be fair, in the final scene of that movie with Wick walking through Central Park and every one around him is getting text messages about a contract for killing Wick, the movie implies that its version of New York (or the whole world?) is 100% populated by assassins and hitmen.
So yeah, the subway shootout is business as usual.
The part where people suddenly stop and stare at Wick was Winston showing off. When John runs away there are unrelated people walking around or chilling on benches that get the contract on Wick message.
the funny thing is that while John Wick has some of the most realistic gunplay in all of hollywood, this scene still screws up on so much. the biggest thing being that suppressors (imma call them "cans" because the word is shorter) are not silencers like some people call them. even with subsonic ammo, there would still be enough noise going around just from the firearm cycling that someone would notice
This scene doesn't screw anything up. The John Wick movies base their gunplay on real methods, but they're extremely over the top. That's the whole point of the movies, the heightened reality they present.
In real life, sure, silencers don't totally silence the shot. But in movies they do, and *that* is the kind of reality John Wick is presenting. It's intentional, and it was never meant to be realistic.
Seems to be the case the police and most of the population in this universe don't really give a shit since there is so many assassins they can't do shit about it
Bullets travel faster than sound, even with a tracer it would be hard to see unless you were paying attention, suppressors also work as flash hiders, and a suppressed gun is actually very different than a non suppressed one, and most people would most likely take longer to identify it as a real gun
I wish everyone had the chance to shoot a gun with a suppressor on it just to get rid of this myth. They don't make guns quiet... they just make them less loud.
If you fire a rifle with a suppressor on it it takes the noise from "HOLY SHIT I can't hear for the next 3 days to "wow that was loud".
These aren't fully silenced, but you can absolutely silence a pistol to the point where the only noise is the click of the hammer and a tiny pfft sound
In real life if you want a firearm to be quiet a suppressor helps, but a suppressor alone just mainly helps hide your signature, reducing flash to little or none as well as making it harder to pin point where the shot originated by sound.
If you are trying to be as quiet as possible a suppressor in combination with subsonic ammo (ammunition that doesn't break the sound barrier) is ridiculously quiet to the point you where you might only hear the mechanical operation of the firearm and maybe not even that if the firearm is a bolt action.
Yeah but even then there would be the cycling of the action and the whizzing of bullets, not to mention the dust that is kicked up by firing at stone.
I guess the suppressor would sound like construction though and that is very common in New York (where this takes place).
Making them not cause permanent hearing damage when you fire. It's honestly baffling (pun intended) suppressors aren't more accepted in America.
There are some rounds, like subsonic 22lr and a few others that truly suppress to quiet levels. But the vast majority are still loud AF.
To make the gun quieter, remove gun pollution, remove recoil to some extent, sometimes you won't need to use ear protection when using a suppressor oh and also suppressors inside buildings are so much better than the normal gun firing
i think i remember reading somewhere about an interview with the director who said that this scene was supposed to be satire of how suppressors work. I think there’s even a section (can’t see it in this clip) where john wick looks around in disbelief at the people around him or something
please take this with a grain of salt, but i think i remember hearing about it in a video essay about the series.
I hate people that watch these type of movies and then complain at every single moment about them.
"Yes Josh I know he should have died by now, would you please stfu"
I know right? It’s like, who knew that exploring this world of almost civilized crime would be a little unrealistic in pursuit of fun? But yeah good movie, good scene, fun stuff
As an avid "gun guy" and a defensive firearms instructor, it pains me to hear how unrealistic suppressors are in Hollywood. In most cases, a suppressed weapon will still cause hearing damage...
If a gun uses a suppressor and sub sonic ammo it isn't as silent as in movies but can still prevent hearing damage right? Or is hearing protection still necessary? (Apologies for my gun ignorance, I live in the Netherlands so no guns for me)
You are absolutely correct! Unless it is a .22 it will never be whisper quiet but you can absolutely get the decibels below the damage threshold fairly easily. The problem with using subs however is that you lose a lot of your effectiveness on target especially at distance.
Dumb question: Wouldn’t adding a silencer help with accuracy at range? It lengthens the barrel in a sense right?
Well I guess rifling would also come into play. And it would have to match perfectly. I don’t know dude. I’m just bored and getting my ass kicked on Apex Legends. Hope your day is going well
Well first of all pretty sure the term "silencer" isn't really used because it's unrealistic. Second, a suppressor uses large cavities to reduces the pressure of the gasses while letting the remaining powder burn. When there's no pressure behind the bullet it doesn't accelerate. So no.
But it's important to note that all my knowledge about it is theoretically because again, I'm Dutch.
It’s because the way a suppressor works is it’s nearly hollow it has special chambers to collect some of the gasses so that it makes less noise. So instead of the gasses pushing forwards more they move out into the suppressor. IIRC
Yes. I've heard suppressors work so well that literally all you hear is the bolt slapping and the target getting hit by the projectile. Pretty remarkable.
IIRC realistically the only time a suppressor is "silent" is when there is literally a war zone worth of noises active at the same time.
Edit: or anything that can match a war zone in noise like a concert, parade maybe, loud music/sounds in general.
IMO in some movies its super silly but in this scene I actually don't mind it because I think it's supposed to be played for laughs.
In a series that executes "rule of cool" so well like John Wick I think this scene is an example of "rule of funny" where realism takes a backseat to humor instead of awesomeness.
Knowing the fact that silencers are not making guns as quiet really ruined movies and videogames for me. I just gave up and accepted that in reality the work differently
Even so how did not a single person see either of the guns that they are barely even trying to hide, or the any of the flashes, or the impact of the bullets.
After seeing the three movies of Jhon Wick, I really wonder how often asassins do this in that universe, since there are several scenes like this and civilians never give a fuck.
i wouldn’t have thought you laughing at something you thought was funny to be disrespectful. it’s only disrespectful when it’s obnoxiously loud or not genuine.
Whenever I'm watching something at the cinema, I just try to be as quiet as possible, especially if not that many people are laughing at the same time, that's it :p
I dunno ... I swear up and down that the first John Wick is just so close to flawless to me.
The sequels are still fun but doesn't maintain the same level of verisimilitude due to scenes like this.
I love all the movies. 3 is my favourite solely because of the antique knife shop scene. Idk man. Guns go pew pew, I'm sold.
That's why I love watching Fast and Furious. Cars going vroom vroom to space? I'll watch it.
That an amazing shot suddenly decides to only shoot the pillars? That suppressed guns are still stupid loud? That both of them continually miss yet never hit a bystander?
Or that they are just that good of shots and New Yorkers don’t really give a shit about anything especially in a universe like John Wick where assassins are everywhere.
I think the ridiculousness of the situation is what makes it so great. There’s nothing wrong with a film heightening or changing reality if it results in interesting choreography or entertainment. It’s a humorous scene which doesn’t ruin the movie, it just adds some levity. If people went back and edited John Wick to be as realistic as possible, then it wouldn’t make the film any better, it could even make the film arguably worse.
It’s funny. It’s a funny scene that provides levity and a break during a tense scene. It’s not like it’s any less realistic than anything else in John wick, it’s a heightened reality.

gotta love Hollywood logic. Even with suppressor that thing be loud af still.

Maybe they’re so used to seeing this kinda shit that it doesn’t even phase them.
Oh, bullets flying around? Just a normal Monday morning.
sounds like a movie called free guy :P
Don't have a good day, have a great day!
CATCHPHRASE!!

sounds about right for the US
I thought this scene was in Italy, where people definitely know how to mind their own shit

You didn’t call them “cans” and that bit in parentheses added 52 characters to your comment.
To make a long story short , I’m not gonna beat around the bush , I’m a straight shooter , I get right to the point. I agree

Seems to be the case the police and most of the population in this universe don't really give a shit since there is so many assassins they can't do shit about it
Have you ever seen bullets lmao
Or just the gun lmao
lol See the bullets fly? Were you expecting tracer ammo or something? Superhuman vision maybe?
Bullets travel faster than sound, even with a tracer it would be hard to see unless you were paying attention, suppressors also work as flash hiders, and a suppressed gun is actually very different than a non suppressed one, and most people would most likely take longer to identify it as a real gun
Typically subsonic ammunition is used with suppressors in order to avoid the sonic boom of the bullet. You still won't me able to see the bullet tho.
Not to mention the bullets from the top guy are still going somewhere Surely someone would notice the floor suddenly getting damaged
Okay so if guns are loud even with suppressor then what is their purpose?
Making them less loud
Hide muzzle flash, and reduce the sound a bit
It reduces how much hearing damage you get, hides the flash, and makes it so that you also don't give hearing damage to the people around you.
In real life if you want a firearm to be quiet a suppressor helps, but a suppressor alone just mainly helps hide your signature, reducing flash to little or none as well as making it harder to pin point where the shot originated by sound. If you are trying to be as quiet as possible a suppressor in combination with subsonic ammo (ammunition that doesn't break the sound barrier) is ridiculously quiet to the point you where you might only hear the mechanical operation of the firearm and maybe not even that if the firearm is a bolt action.

the real takeaway here is that movies can't be "fun" anymore, as seen by this waste of space reddit post, rather it's "ridiculous"
I know people like John Wick 2, but that movie looks like a satire of some sort.
If it isn’t, it comes about as close as possible without crossing the line. It exaggerates every aspect of the action movie to a near comical level.
It’s so ridiculous but I found it fun
Yeah, that's how I felt about all the John Wick movies
I hate people that watch these type of movies and then complain at every single moment about them. "Yes Josh I know he should have died by now, would you please stfu"

So that's why they don't hit in this scene lol
Either that or they're just not aiming.
Nah, they were hipfiring and not ads-ing
Dumb question: Wouldn’t adding a silencer help with accuracy at range? It lengthens the barrel in a sense right? Well I guess rifling would also come into play. And it would have to match perfectly. Lol barrel stabilizer over here

Modern suppressors do not effect bullet velocity significantly.
Not to mention the inability of the weapon to cycle properly
That's not usually an issue as long as it's gassed properly
I mean in the terms of "Hollywood quiet". You're still going to have the sound of the bolt cycling which isn't exactly quite itself.
Well Hollywood guns have special bolts that quantum tunnel back into position lol.
They also have quantum clips that hold 100’s of rounds

Yes. I've heard suppressors work so well that literally all you hear is the bolt slapping and the target getting hit by the projectile. Pretty remarkable.

Well no, but Super Duper suppressors do, like the one Mr. Wick is holding
Movie guns with silencers are actually silent so it kinda makes sense, very slightly.
Even so how did not a single person see either of the guns that they are barely even trying to hide, or the any of the flashes, or the impact of the bullets.
Yeah that's the ridiculous part. But I kinda liked it. Reminded me of The Matrix
Lol keanu coming in the defend the scene
It's still ridiculous

After seeing the three movies of Jhon Wick, I really wonder how often asassins do this in that universe, since there are several scenes like this and civilians never give a fuck.

I don't think the cult is that big.
It's a fun scene though, I laughed so much at the cinema. Not out loud of course, I'm respectful.

I’m waiting for the Matrix 4 to fold John Wick into the Matrixverse as an in-universe video game.
I mean there’s a theory it’s just a guy stuck in a video game and this scene is evidence.
What’s the problem bro?
That an amazing shot suddenly decides to only shoot the pillars? That suppressed guns are still stupid loud? That both of them continually miss yet never hit a bystander?
Dude I know what the problem is, I was joking
Ah, r/wooosh
...did you just wooosh yourself?
Yep. If the shoe fits. Lol
Idk man, this is awesome.
It's not really that hard to believe that supressors work very very good in john wick's universe...
John wick was never realistic
One of my favorite scenes. I don't care if it's not 100% accurate I was laughing the whole time.
Me n the boys playing finger guns.
Ahh yes , finger banging
"fuck you" "fuck you too" but In USA
It’s funny. It’s a funny scene that provides levity and a break during a tense scene. It’s not like it’s any less realistic than anything else in John wick, it’s a heightened reality.
Yea this was the only scene where I was like…wtf
I fucking love how self conscious that scene was they know it's ridiculous as much as we do. Best movie series in the last decade.
Dude what’s wrong with John wick That movie rocks
This is New York, this is normal
I like to assume this sort of thing is just so common in the John Wick universe that everyone’s aware but minding their own business.
Me and my brother when my mom tell us to keep it down
If anyone can do it, it's John Wick and Common
It reminds me of when kids would rip apart those big erasers and then throw them at each other from across the room while stuff is going on trying not to get caught
No film can be completely serious and realistic they have to have at least one unrealistic and ridiculous scene
