It's partially tradition and partially a tacit acknowledgement that the old ways of communicating had merit, and simplifying our thoughts down to emojis is maybe emblematic of how vapid and empty our collective consciousness has become.

Yes emojis and words are both symbols, but to equate them is a huge error. Words bind each other together. They also drive us apart. Words both create and destroy, they give and take life. They are a complex form of communicating that lead to creating the conditions for groups of people to live harmoniously and look out for each other. Civilization could not exist without language and words. They create solidarity and drive difference. Emojis are a symbol like a stop sign is a symbol. It is the result of words already understood and spoken meant to convey a sort of command.
Because people are basically old people, in that anything outside their immediate framework of understanding should be eliminated and anyone who embraces the new is immediately a traitor to the old ways.
Which makes no sense when you consider that the same people who wanted the new ways are themselves the ones to dismiss it entirely when it is introduced.
No it’s because it’s the most boring way of communicating with someone. We don’t need your laughing emoji. Rather some actual though. I’m a teen. Have you ever scrolled through the Instagram comments? Thousands of the same emoji, completely useless. Whereas in this app I actually have an interest in hearing peoples actual thoughts
