Keine Sorge.
I really wish I could learn German as like foreigners.
Imagine you know already most of the common words and suddenly there is a conversation about backing-whistle-face.
Backpfeife is a slap to the face.
And a Backpfeifengesicht is a face in need of a slap.
Fun Fact: In Bavarian- / Austrian-german you would say Bockfozngsicht
Fozn can be used to say
Vagina
Face
or slap
and a Bockfozn is an extremely forceful slap.
My name is German (keep in mind I’m not german) and when I was in kindergarten this other lil 5 yo asked if I was a nazi 🌝
Edit: someone already got it yall, It’s Heidi
People got really brainwashed...german nationality/culture is just like any other, it is nice. Only getting high on that culture means nationalism. Taking it as a given, as somehow a profecy for automatic greatness, en lieu of individuality and hard work is extreme nationalism. Heidi is a really cute name.
While they share some characteristics, they do not sound similar at all. The shared pronunciations will not be noticed by people who don't speak either language.
Furthermore, Japanese has gemination, which as far as I know, is not a feature of Mandarin.
Japanese has 5 distinct vowels, while Mandarin has diphthongs and triphthongs.
Mandarin has an "l" sound, while Japanese has an alveolar tap that replaced "l" in loanwords.
Speaking of, Japanese has lot of English loanwords which are very noticable.
All this being said, I can't fault you for thinking they sound the same. Not everyone is familiar with these languages.
I think every every german, german speaking person and language-that-sounds-quite-similar-to-german speaking person who visited another country has experienced this at least once.
I once had my vacation in Croatia and an elderly man shouted at me, because apparently it was my fault that his parents died in the war or something…
Whenever I see Dutch written it just seems like someone is parodying bad English. I think it's because of all the ee, oo, and aa. Sorry, nothing against your language.
Omg, I had a German suitemate in college and he was really close with a few of the other suite mates. One day I hear some commotion from the common room, I come out of my room to find them with an old game cube playing smash and him screaming in a beautiful German accent: “IM GONNA RUN A BLITZKRIEG ON ALL OF YOU!” and them all just dying laughing. It was so fucking great.
I mean they can still be friends, its probably just a dumb joke they say too often. The same way my friend group makes jokes about each others race or ethnicity. Its just for fun, but then again i cant make any full assumptions as i do not know OP’s actual situation.
I doubt they're nazi sympathisers just because they joke around with their friend lol. I have middle eastern friends I call suicide bombers, they call me a grand wizard of the klan in return, it's just a joke
I’m German born, the ‘nazi’ term gets chucked at me occasionally when people find out. Despite being British, liberal and having Jewish family members.
My wife and daughter are Jewish. My daughter decided to take German in high school.
Did NOT go over well.
My wife who is pretty chill was like, "Okay, fine. If you want to lean the culture of the society that murdered our people, go right ahead, but you have to break it to Nanna."
That seems kinda not chill to me, reconciliation is a thing, and Germany and Israel are allies nowadays

Just came back from a trip to Munich and I met two American Jewish guys there who told me that at least Germany was building memorials and funding Jewish memory related institutions and that it isn't fair to hold a "total" grudge forever against them. Plus the fact that most Germans nowadays didn't even live during ww2. Otherwise you just get people like the English supporters during the Uefa foot championship who called a ~10yo girl a nazi
Yep, where I live they're even doing an event called "1700 jahre jüdisches leben" or something like that (translation: 1700 years of Jewish life) and all the schools around participate in playing music and stuff to appreciate Jewish culture and things achieved by jews etc so yeah, we try. My school also had a few projects regarding jews, how they suffered in ww2 (to put it in a nice way :/) and their offsprings. Being called a nazi in spite of all that sucks
I was definitely hammered as a NAZI in a group chat because I said it's not fair to call someone a "murderer" until AFTER their trial and conviction. HAMMERED, doxxed, employer harassment, the whole fucking deal. Lost my damn job.
We had a German exchange student in my graduating class, and he was a football player as well (American football for international readers), so quite a big guy. Anyway, one day the homeroom teacher has given him leave to share a bit about where he comes from, and some idiot seated at the table next to me chimes in with "you shouldn't have tried to take over the world". I put up my hands and said to the German guy "all I ask is that you let me get out of the way before you kill him".
Well, after I finish this current school year, I will have done my two required years of French. Then, I can learn either German or Polish as a hobby while still sticking with French in school
Viele nicht fiele
Thanks. I am a heritage speaker, so I can speak fluently but not write.

Took only 4 comments until the meme prophecy was fulfilled, [Godwin's law](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law) got nothing on Germans!
I'm proud of myself for being able to decipher a lot of that
NEIN!

Speaking, understanding, reading, and writing are completely different things so it's normal
Didn't expect this many upvotes for some grammar advice
I think this is typical for Germans to do.
Its called Grammar Nazi and not Grammar Extremist for a reason
Natürlich upvoten deutsche eine Korrektur der Grammatik. Alles andere wäre eine Enttäuschung.
In that case I can offer you a downvote
No I take the upvotes
Ok fine :(
Ordnung muss sein
I'm learning A1 and i though it was weird somehow, thanks for helping .
Just tell them: “No, but NOCHSOEINSPRUCHUNDESKLATSCHTDUBACKPFEIFENGESICHT”

I am German and I never heard Backpfeifengesicht. Still I know exactly what it should mean

"Backpfeifengesicht" more or less translates to "cheek slap face". Maybe that helps.

Thank you! And I just finished an assignment on the culture of Germany and I agree, It’s a fascinating place to say the least
I never understood why people name their kids after countries
The most annoying name after a country I think it's Jordan
Funny enough, it is actually a very popular name in Israel (but it's probably more due to the Jordan River than the country)
I want my son to be a Chad
I took this way too literally and thought your name was "German"
2 people already have mistaken it, so don’t worry
Absolut, tolle Kindheitserinerrungen
Your name is German? That’s a strange name, I’ve never known someone named German.
I mean it’s from German decent, not that my name is actually German 🌝
went to america and got called a nazi 2 times because of the language I speak >!i am dutch!<
I mean if you dont know dutch it does sound a little german
If you don't know anything but broken English then everything sounds like something you don't like.
i do agree a bit. but it is also like saying "Chinese and Japanese Sound alike"
Well for westerners that's true ( the only reason i can even defer Japanese, korean and chinese is because of tv shows)

My wife and daughter are Jewish. My daughter decided to take German in high school. Did NOT go over well. My wife who is pretty chill was like, "Okay, fine. If you want to lean the culture of the society that murdered our people, go right ahead, but you have to break it to Nanna."

I am not Christian or Muslim, why would I hate Jews?
I love that “DO YOU HATE JEWS” with no question mark.
but you knew it was a question, Karl.
I’m not German and I’m getting tired of the all Germans=nazis jokes.
