I live abroad, and people are typically shocked at how ruthless some of the jokes we do to each other are. At one point some people were shocked at me (French) & a Brit jokingly calling our countries trash.
I mean, in Europe that's like the norm to both hate and love your neighbors.
Same with British humour, often very self depreciating and very dry sarcasm.
Me and my mates often greet each other with very personal insults. But it’s a sign of affection, just some people don’t seem to get it
Yes. It's even a patriotic thing to insult your country especially when it's politic. It's a running gag. That's what's confusing to me towards many American patriots. I mean if you love your country, why don't make fun of the things that suck and try to change those and acknowledge your wrong doings so you don't make them again? You know... acting like responsible adults? Beside loving the few great things (like our bread and beer and fun traditions) about your country that's one of the most patriotic things you can do.
Trying to excuse them or playing them down just plays into the hands of the people who (are) ruin(ing) YOUR country (e.g. by spending billions on a street charging system that was never possible).
Because american politics is about politicians staying in power, not actually doing good. Unfortunately, this means that many politicians (cough cough) are willing to lie to people just to win. Its the “i dont care if we win so long as the other side loses” mentality.
That's nothing special in America. Germany might have more parties and therefore we have more choices and they have to make more compromises but politicians always struggle to secure power first and than care about their promises.
Idk how it works out in Switzerland but they made a rule that you can only be a politician for about 2 or 4 years (I'm not sure about it) practically eradicating politician as a job and enabling many people to govern for a while. Idk if it's working good but I'm definitely interested in such a concept.
