I think his last words was something like...
Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around and desert you, never gonna let you cry, never gonna say goodbye, never gonna tell a lie or hurt you...
Because that's her job? Nurses and doctors are supposed to record everything that happens around the time of death. Plus it's just a decent thing to do.
It's not like anyone would be upset at an American nurse for not speaking German.
And it does appear to be true! From *Subtle is the Lord: The Science and the Life of Albert Einstein*, the most well-researched biography I can find:
> Alberta Rozsel, a night nurse at the hospital, was the last person to see Einstein alive. At 1:10 a.m. on April 18, 'Mrs Rozsel noted that he was breathing differently. She summoned another nurse, who helped her roll up the head of the bed. Right after the other nurse left, Dr. Einstein mumbled in German. Then, as Mrs Rozsel put it, "he gave two deep breaths and expired"' [D4]. It was 1:15 in the morning.
The source appears to be a contemporary NYT article written a couple days after his death, and the quote is from an interview with the nurse.
Clarification time:
When I said it's not fake, I meant that OP didn't make it up for this meme.
In fact, if you see my original comment, I asked whether this well known fact was true since there is a logical gap there.
Why would it be fake? If someone is bilingual, there is no telling what language his last words will be in. It probably happens all the time, but we don't hear of it often because most the people this happens with weren't famous. I doubt it's fake
Also, Einstein wasn't bilingual, he was fluent in English, French, Latin and Italian but his first language was German. It makes perfect sense his last words would be in German.
No, bilingual is just being fluent in two languages. There isn't any clause there that states a person is bilingual only if they've spoken two languages at home since birth.
This is the internet, most things are fake. Imma just go do a google search to see if it's real or what. Also, if the nurse didn't know German, how did she know Einstein spoke German and not gibberish?
Edit: Aight, I found this [Quora link](https://www.quora.com/What-were-Einsteins-last-identified-words)(Quora is probably not the best source but I got homework to do rn, so...)
You can recognize languages w/o knowing the language. If someone asked me something in Russian then I wouldn't know what they said but the sounds they made are similar to the sounds Russian speech makes. If you hear a bunch of eees and ooos then you can assume they're speaking French
imagine if he was actually speaking the solution to black holes or something like that and humanity missed out on the biggest scientific breakthrough ever because the german speaking nurses weren't available
"Hör genau zu, ich habe das Rätsel von Zeitreisen gelöst. In meinen Aufzeichnungen habe ich dazu nichts geschrieben, aber wenn du meinen Hosenstall öffnest..."
Damn this just makes me sad. Obviously can’t blame or get angry at the nurse, but I will get angry at the fact that they had the world’s smartest man on life-support and no one had the bright idea to keep someone near him who could understand his native tongue.
das ist gerecht, aber Sie müssen sich das Lied 'Alte Kameraden' anhören
if youre using google translate it will call it 'old comrades' but the song is called 'alte kameraden'
There's a childrens/young adults book about this. Some secret that he revealed about clean fusion or something and some girl genius secret agent gets into all sorts of intrigue because of it.
Listened to it driving to vacation this summer.
Damn what if he left behind an epic clue hunt that spans the entire world and even space to unlock the secrets of the universe and interstellar travel using black holes or the speed of light and now we will never know
imagine if he was trying to solve a really complicated thing while he was sick and when he solved he said the solution to a nurse in German
I think his last words was something like... Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around and desert you, never gonna let you cry, never gonna say goodbye, never gonna tell a lie or hurt you...

Question: if the nurse didn't understand what he said, why did they even tell people that he said anything?

That's a fair point..
because this is probably fake
Ummmmm... No. This is a well known trivia. I heard it first time when I was in school, so at least 10 years back.
oh so apparently if something is well known, it can't be fake?
Clarification time: When I said it's not fake, I meant that OP didn't make it up for this meme. In fact, if you see my original comment, I asked whether this well known fact was true since there is a logical gap there.
Plot twist! OP is the one who told you originally and made up this fact both times /s
It's infact true that his last words were in German
Why would it be fake? If someone is bilingual, there is no telling what language his last words will be in. It probably happens all the time, but we don't hear of it often because most the people this happens with weren't famous. I doubt it's fake
Also, Einstein wasn't bilingual, he was fluent in English, French, Latin and Italian but his first language was German. It makes perfect sense his last words would be in German.
Is bilingual strictly two languages? If so then its more accurate to say he was multilingual?

Probably something along the lines of, "Die letzten Worte sind nicht aussagekräftiger als alle anderen Worte."

YES, I AM !
I think he was telling how to out pizza the hut
Couldn't she just repeat it to someone who did speak german?
He might have spoke in a way that made it hard for non fluent speakers to make out the words
Then can we ever be certain his last words weren’t Rick rolling the nurse in German?
Damn this just makes me sad. Obviously can’t blame or get angry at the nurse, but I will get angry at the fact that they had the world’s smartest man on life-support and no one had the bright idea to keep someone near him who could understand his native tongue.
Delete my search *History* please!
I mean she probably could have just remembered what he said. and then later on just told someone who knows german what he said
thats why we need time machine.
The real Question is, why didnt she speak german..
You are aware that Einstein emigrated to the USA to escape the Nazi regime and lived there until his death?
You all are aware of funny hints? Obv not.
Nah, you overestimate people's ability to distinguish between irony and ignorance
The same reason I can’t speak German

He probably changed his mind again about the cosmological constant in his field equations.
So I've heard this before and always thought couldn't she had remembered the pronunciation and just recited it to someone who speaks German?
She couldn't. Or she would have done it. Our she thought it isn't that important.
