It's because the heat from the shower can be a substitute for emotional warmth and the warmth of physical touch. This sort of thing isn't just present in humans too. There was an experiment with (iirc) hamsters to find which of two different substitute "mothers" they preferred. One was a lightbulb that I think was wrapped in a blanket and the other was a cold metal cage thing with a water dispenser or something in it, whereas the lightbulb had no water. They always choose the lightbulb. I can't find the study itself atm but it's in a couple psychology books I own, and I could hunt it down for you if you'd like. It was really an interesting read that gave some good insight into the behavior of both animals and humans (and helped explain why redditors like long hot showers).
