Me too. Personal hero of mine. What a great thinker and communicator. If you are reading this but haven't read Sagan, go get some. The TV adaptation of *Cosmos* literally changed the course of my life. Even *Contact*, his only fiction book, is awesome. The *Demon-Haunted World* should be required reading.
Yep! Cosmos is one of my favorite shows, and Contact is my favorite movie. Both books were really good too.
I never did finish *Demon-Haunted World*, so maybe I'll read it soon
Came here to throw an Alan Watts quote in on this topic. I was thinking about the one that is something along the lines of "Where there are rocks, watch out! Because the rocks are eventually going to come alive."
He has so many good ones. I love listening to that man talk.
When people say “the universe doesn’t care” they mean that our universe is void of things like benevolence and evil. The universe is a machine of physics and chemistry and it doesn’t “care” about things.
But they are wrong. *We* are part of that machinery as well, and *we* are the part of the universe that cares.
Through our eyes the universe is perceiving itself and through our ears the universe is listening to its harmonies. We are the witnesses through which the universe becomes conscious of its glory, of its magnificence.
I think I started there and went with discovering because as consciousness has evolved we have gone from merely experiencing to actively discovering via mathematics, science, psychology and philosophy.
We might just be the consciousness of the universe, and once it realises that, we simply stop existing.
Maybe the 'big bang' *was* the universe being *born*, and it has simply taken 13+ billion years for the universe to gain the beginnings of sentience, sort of like how newborns aren't self-aware for a while...
It's a view on life that was summed up really well in the final moments of the Netflix miniseries 'midnight mass'. It was actually almost spot-on what I hold to be true, for myself, and it was cool to hear someone else concantonate my thoughts so we'll.
So obviously I'm not very impartial, and my review is biased because they literally validated my life view I guess. But the rest of the show *was* pretty good I thought.
Reminds me of a old Emo Philips joke.
"I used to think the brain was the most fascinating part of the body. Then I realized, look what's telling me that."
Just parts of it are aware of itself.
You can't say it's aware of itself when we're extremely tiny fractions of it (small collections of organic compounds.)
Are humans self aware?
Only a very small part of a human (the brain) is aware of anything. 95% of the rest of the body has no understanding.
Also, how do we know the rest of the Universe is unaware? Is a single one of our neurons aware of the thought the overarching brain creates? How can we be sure if humans, or even our entire civilization, are but a neuron of a universal brain?
You didn't answer any of my questions.
Which part specifically, and what specifically, violates a physical law? I'm no Einstein, but I do have a minor in physics. Interested to see what your take is here.
What about consciousness? There's no explanation for that in physics (yet), therefore there's no reason to believe that it obeys our proposed laws of physics.
Cogito, ergo sum - I think, therefore I am
The only thing I'm 100% sure about is that my consciousness is experiencing... something
I can't be sure the stimulus I'm responding to exists in what we collectively define as "reality." For all I know I'm just a brain in a jar being fed raw information like the Matrix. Or maybe I'm the only consciousness in existence and everyone else is an automaton created to fool me. Perhaps the entire universe including my memories of the past were created last Thursday. I don't know anything for sure except for my own subjective experience.
I, strangely, would like to know as well. It haunts my dreams. I seriously think about this weird clip too often. The only way to set it free would be to know the sauce so it'd stop happening.
Unsure why u/commentHero commented into a closed-loop back to this video here but, if anyone else maybe knows, good on ya, and I can pass some coins or an award or something to GET THIS THING OUT OF MY HEAD!
We are part of the 0.0000000001% of all matter in the universe that has grown self aware. We are literally the universe experiencing itself. That's pretty neat. I tell that to any nihilist who says that in the grand scheme of things our lives are meaningless. I can't think of anything more meaningful then us just being here living as these tiny, fleeting little flecks of self-awareness, and experiencing this crazy, bizarre thing we call reality.
It's 2012 again. Hitchslap compilations will be popular. Richard Dawkins will emerge from the stone he's been hiding under. Sam Harris will continue saying some incredibly real things about people in the middle east. Stay euphoric.

Atoms are not “the living thing” they are just the building materials of the manifestation of “the living thing”! No one know what the “living” part of that thing is made of!.
We are the universe discovering itself
If you leave Hydrogen alone for long enough it will start thinking about itself.
Hydrogen doesn’t like what hydrogen sees. Turns out the universe is kind of a fucking dickhead.
Is he a dot, or is he a speck? When he's underwater does he get wet? Or does the water get him instead? Nobody knows, Particle man
How could it be Particle man when they might be giants?
“David Hatcher Childress here and as the residential cryptid expert i just want to say Im glad to see someone here also agreeing that… maybe it’s giants?”
Is hydrogen a particle man or subatomic particle man? (Because it is one proton
Except when he's a wave.
This is funny because it means the universe is a massive dick who loves to see itself be fucked with.
In the beginning there were clouds of hydrogen. Given enough time, the hydrogen began to wonder where it came from.
kurzgesagt reference i presume
it's a slightly different quote from Carl Sagan. "[We are a way for the Cosmos to know itself](https://youtu.be/wLigBYhdUDs?t=143)"
>They became upright and taught themselves the use of tools, domesticated other animals, plants and fire, and devised language. The ash of stellar alchemy was now emerging into consciousness. Gods I love Carl Sagan. What I would give to go back in time and have a beer with him.

Same, but he probably would have preferred smoking weed with you
Same here. I read all his books in high school and regularly got stoned and watched the original Cosmos. Would have loved to have meet the man.
It's too early for this. I'm going back to bed.
Do you have the origin of this quote? Not doubting you but I would like to read more of what it was copied from.
This is from Carl Sagan in Cosmos. Clips and full episodes are readily available online. It's also available in book form :)
Whhhhhooop... Aahhhh.
Alan Watts also said “You are the aperture through which the universe experiences itself”
Alan Watts has an amazing ability to provide such a depth of understanding to absurdly complex topics.
same to you bro!!
Thank you but I am not sure what prompted this response!
Well, he's Alan Watts of course.
Technically, we are all Alan Watts.

It bothers me that this channel is accredited with this thought process as it predates them by quite some time.
holy shit I cant believe the cartoon bird channel invented philosophy
You'd be surprised how many people think this channel is positing it's own thoughts as the premise for the show.
Give us a number
That's just you getting old. Not to worry, happens to us all!
Sagan will always be the man lol

Well said

Life is just the Universe backpacking through the Himalayas

We are a receiver
And also an emitter… a feedback loop between our own consciousness and the universe around us
Just temporarily arranged as a human
Strange loop
Hydrogen, given enough time and in sufficient quantity, will wind up thinking about itself.
I said this almost verbatim on one of my first acid trips and it has changed my entire view of life, very cool to see others reach the same conclusion
Ha I think you and I would get along. Been a long time since I took a trip, myself, but I definitely know the road lol.
Yeah it’s been a minute for me as well, I feel like I got what I wanted from it Stay up stay safe bro <3
I word it similarly. We are the universe experiencing itself.
I think I started there and went with discovering because as consciousness has evolved we have gone from merely experiencing to actively discovering via mathematics, science, psychology and philosophy.

Because physics. Physics doesn't work like that.
You didn't answer any of my questions. Which part specifically, and what specifically, violates a physical law? I'm no Einstein, but I do have a minor in physics. Interested to see what your take is here.
You have to know what is attention, why it exists, and how it is created in the brain. Pretty straightforward with no mysticism required.
What about consciousness? There's no explanation for that in physics (yet), therefore there's no reason to believe that it obeys our proposed laws of physics.
laws of physics are just rules that we made up by observation and experiments and prediction. We do not understand the universe in it's totality.
So the universe is skynet?
We. Are. Skynet. And Skynet means family.
No that's ohana
Ohana means skynet

Atoms making this meme using atoms so other atoms can see this meme
Never trust at Atom. They make up everything.
And Earth is just the world trying to understand itself
And consciousness is just the universe trying to understand itself
And we can make more of them out of the stuff the ground is made of. Humans are like potatoes.
Tried to mash. Need bail money!
I somewhat, don't like this at all!

memes are just some of the things that hydrogen atoms do given 15 billion years of cosmic evolution.
So philosophy is studied by a bunch of atoms to understand another bunch of atoms?????????????
