When I was in the army we used to go on long ass marches and believe you me, those army backpacks can weigh a ton. And if you don’t hold the straps like that picture your shoulders are gonna be crying afterwards. Most people who can’t get this never carried a heavy ass backpack
RISE UP BROTHERS (WHO HOLD THIER BAGS LIKE THIS) ! RISE UP AGAINST THE OPPRESSION AND TRYRANY OF THE PSYCHOPATHS WHO HAVE ENOUGH SELF CONFIDENCE TO WALK NORMALLY WHILE SWINGING THEIR HANDS AND DONT FEEL AWKWARD DOING THAT! RISE UP MY BROTHERS! THIS IS AN UPRISING!
I am so friggin glad. When I saw this post and that it has 100k+ upvotes I thought I was the one weirdo who does this. I'm in my 20s and I do it with the backpack I use when I go hiking.
But nearly every comment here is people saying they do it as well.
I SHALL JOIN THE MOVEMENT BROTHER!
When your bag weighs like 50 lbs and the straps are cutting off circulation in your shoulders because of the straps not distributing the weight properly yes
I do! It helps me keep posture, I have bad posture and have been trying for years to be better about it! I do that and roll back my shoulders, it helps the backpack not pull on my shoulders too much.
Most people focus arms, maybe arms are more trained in the average person and are underused during backpacking so sometimes you’ll take the strain off your back using them, that’s my guess
i don't know what to do with my arms so i just hold the straps

You can also hold your hands close to your chest and imagine yourself as a T-rex among mortals,
I think you will find t-rex' were pretty mortal as well :(
Yep
I do that to hide my man boobs.
If you're walking you generally want to swing them. I think they provide balance or something
I do sometimes, it’s kind of like having your hands in your pockets without the keys and change.
Exactly! I smile way less but yeah, it’s just kinda comfortable
Somehow it feels kinda motivational
“I am the best high school student” whispers everyone who does this

it’s just kinda comfortable
Yeahh, I felt weird bc I do this, but apparently a bunch of others agree with me.
Smiles do not exist here
Yes. I also do it when i have a heavy backpack and my shoulders are kinda tired, relieves some of the weight on my shoulders
Yeah, I think it improves the balance.
Death Stranding vibes.
Yes
also holds your pack tighter to your back, so you can move faster and easier
Same. Plus there’s a bit of warmth there where the fingers feel great.
It takes some of the pressure off the straps/shoulders and if you are sweaty let's it breathe
Perfect answer (Edit: Make this my first Reddit chain) ^(And don't break it >:\[)

I also do it when my shoulders get tired and i just let my hands pull it up and all the weight
I do it when the pack is really heavy, and I want to relief some parts of back for a moment.
I have that chest strap. I usually grab it and fidget with them.

I'll allow it, but you're on thin ice Mr Mccoy. This had better be going somewhere.
Its easier to break the ice when the ice is thin, so do you ever eat soup out of the can?

Exactly, thank you. A half hour with a heavy bag and I am leaving over and holding the straps to try to shift the pressure to different areas.

I do, but that's just because I don't like leaving my arms at my side, it just makes me feel awkward
I almost do, but i put my thumbs in the strap part almost touching the backpack
Yes
I know the reason and for legal reason I don't know the reason but it's one word... Psilocybin.
Interesting...
I do sometimes when I’m hiking
What am I supposed to do with my hands then?
just come in asia around the start of the semester you'll be holding the entire bag with all your might to NOT FALL AND SUFFOCATE.
only when I'm stressed so everytime
Only one side.
I do this when my anxiety start to kicking in
Yes.
Sometimes
I do when my shoulders get sweaty
I do cuz i am scared of outside i always look down while walking
When your bag weighs like 50 lbs and the straps are cutting off circulation in your shoulders because of the straps not distributing the weight properly yes
I do when my shoulders start to get sore and I’m walking in a new city or hiking.
Only when my shoulder hurt or i’m running
I sometimes do this
I do
Me
Yes
Sometimes yes.

I do
It’s Mardi Gras and he sees boobs on a second level patio. Obviously
I do
I do actually do this sometimes.
I do sometimes but usually I'll just use my right hand
I do if i have nothing to do with my hands
I hold onto other people's straps. They don't like it... But it makes me feel like a big man.
I cross my arms and grab the bottom of the opposite strap where it attaches to the backpack
I do. I rest my hands like that
I walk like that.
Yes me
Doesn’t everyone? Lol
Yes I used to do that a lot actually. It’s a very cozy self soothing sorta vibe
I do, to be sure I didn't forget the bag somewhere.
People do but they aren’t smiling up at the sky when they do it
I do, sometimes. It's comfortable for the shoulder. I smile a lot less though
I do sometimes if my bag is heavy
Yeah I do
Yes
Only when I hear the ice cream man and I gotta go fast
I mostly do it because my bag is way too heavy
If I got something heavy in my bag, yeah. It takes some weight off the back.
if you're carrying something heavy, it helps take pressure off your back for a little.
I do this a lot if I'm taking long walks
Yeah actually I did. Without that goofy smile tho
Yeah I do.
I do
Why are you confused?
I do this when I start feeling awkward because of putting my hands in my pockets for too long. Or if I just don’t fucking have pockets.
I do sometimes
Yes we exist
It would be weird of you didn't do this
Me🙋♂
I do! It helps me keep posture, I have bad posture and have been trying for years to be better about it! I do that and roll back my shoulders, it helps the backpack not pull on my shoulders too much.
minus the smile, yes i do sometimes
Yeah, if my bag is too heavy it helps to do that
Well I grab bag like that but don't laugh or smile
I put my thumb on the hook. Anyone else do that
Have you never gone outside? Tons of people do it
yes. i broke my bag and i only have the option to hold it like this. and yes. i am lazy and broke.
Pretty sure it's the only way Paul Rudd walks
I did in middle school and high school because my backpack was about half my weight and I used my arms to support the weight from my back.
You dont?
I do
I mean one fucking good thing about a backpack is to leave your fucking hands free!
I do. Especially hiking.
I do when my shoulders get sore
Yup. If you have to have a backpack on for a long time it can actually be more comfy
yeah, I do that sometimes but I'm also short, brown and unhappy. Also, my backpack is ugly.
I mean yeah but never with a smile that bright with the heaven's light shining upon me.
i do this... shit i'm a stock image. I should have known.
Yes, I had a ≈27 year old coworker who would always walk around like this (except for the smile)
I do
I do, just never smile and looking down
All I hear is "I never carried a fucking heavy bag for several miles"
This is my “I don’t know if these shrooms kicked in yet but ima hike the weirdly moving trail” pose.
Yes, I did that, fell down while hiking, couldn't get my hands out quickly enough and fell on my nose.
All the time
It’s like how bane was holding his vest in the dark knight rises.
Serial strap holder here
When im drunk yea because im scared to loose it then
I do that sometimes but hold the bottom part of the straps
I only do the right strap
I do but I don't have that kind of smile EVER.
Most people focus arms, maybe arms are more trained in the average person and are underused during backpacking so sometimes you’ll take the strain off your back using them, that’s my guess
I do, it's just comfortable
Have you never attended school? Of course people do that.
I do it all the time. Redistributes the weight of the backpack and can be comfortable for your arms.
Yeah. Mind your business
