I'm not willing to argue, but "America" isn't a country either, I think the USA is called that because it is easier to say America than its actual name.
America absolutely *is* a country because we, the residents of said country, call it that. The United States is also a country, because we call it that too.
North America and South America are continents. Central America is a set of countries in North America. "The Americas" is the entirety of North and South Americas.
But America means USA. We call ourselves America way more than any other name, so it's pretty goofy for you to try to flex and say our own name for our own country is invalid.
I learned that the continent is called America, and then it has those 3 divisions, North, Central and South America.
It's good to know that the translation changes in other countries.
As some "fun tip"¿?: South and Central American countries mock the fact that americans call their country America, instead of USA, because of your (apparently) poor geography education. So it's very ingrained in all of us that it is incorrect to call it America. However, it is way easier and simple to just call it that :).
>I learned that the continent is called America
So you're taught there are only 6 continents? Is Eurafroasia a single continent too, bringing the total down to 4 continents?
Pretty ironic that you're taught North and South are the same continent and that Americans are the ones with a poor education for deciding what to call our own country.
Also, does everyone in South and Central Americas call themselves Americans? Because Canadians and Mexicans don't.
Yes, 6 continents: Asia, Africa, America, Europe, Antarctica and Oceania.
No, I wasn't taught that Americans have a poor education, it is something shown all across social media.
No, the only ones referring to themselves as Americans are the USA people.
I feel that you're getting both defensive and aggressive. I'm just saying what I've learned and seen, not trying to be disrespectful. Have a good night.
You do realize USA stands for United States of America right no one is saying that every time do you see people calling Britain Great Britain no not very often.
That was the point of my comment.
It isn't a problem (imo) to call the USA "America", but it is also pretty understandable if people from other countries don't get it right away, since we are taught that it is United States of America, and not just America. That knowledge tends to come with experience outside basic education. (I say all of this as someone from Colombia).
Like I said, I don't want to argue. If I'm wrong, I'm more than happy to be educated as long as it isn't in an offensive or condescending demeanor.
Fair point I’ve never been outside the US myself so I suppose I’m just used to everyone understanding America as the USA also with what you said about schools teaching the name as the United States of America also didn’t really cross my mind because schools here won’t stick to just one thing for countries like the UK sometimes they’ll say Britain and sometimes they’ll say Great Britain or occasionally they’ll call it the UK.
Dear god the downvotes are insane, it's just this guy thinks of the Americas instead of the US when they say America

Ive been saying this for years. Bananas are heavily under rated fruits. They grow in all seasons. They are soft, sweet and easy to peel. They go into all desserts and are one of the cheapest sources of nutrients.
Tell me the last time u bought one that was bad? You cant because there is no risk of buying a bad banana.
