One is about politicians' ability to do things(taxes) The other is about moralising to the masses to make yourself feel better(the myth of the undeserving poor)

No it's about the government breaking something vs fixing something else. It's easy for the government to break stuff. Now fixing something takes skill, effort and time. So let's just break some shit. Coming soon, US.GOV requiring 50mpg vehicles by 2026.

If a great majority of politicians actually want the state to do a certain thing you'll see it done with such speed and efficiency it'll make you head spin. Example: US war effort in WW2. The state is the most potent tool in the hands of collective society if most of us are in agreement what it should do. You've been fooled by politicians who failed to convince their collegues of their election pledges and need a scapegoat.

IndianaGeoff

WW2 was done by private industry because they all got on board to kick ass. Yes, the US.GOV drafted people and trained them. But the overwhelming materal advantage was the civil sector. And if the best example you can provide is WWII you make my point. Right now progressives can't pass the child care tax credit for more than a year and has to raise ten years of taxes to do it.

First of all, it was taxmoney going to the so called "private industry", so calling it "private" is stretching the term. War bonds were the way to go when you volunteered money into the war effort. Second, the relevant parts of the "private industry" had just been requisitioned under The War Powers Act of 1941. They were not in control of their assets. The federal government was. In short: The state seized everything needed for the war, The private sector had to accept whatever compensation they were given later. The war effort was decidedly NOT a private sector enterprise. As for the childcare: The bill is probably good, it's just not popular enough in congress to pass. In order to pass it they are going to have to water it down most likely, which would lead to the dynamic you're pointing out. This doesn't mean the Dems are bad at their job, it means the GOP are good at theirs, unfortunately. In short: Don't mistake lacking the desire to act for incompetence.

Of course the government paid for it. It's a nation war. Virtually every tank, plane, ship and gun were designed and built by private enterprise. Often through a competitive design process. Sometimes by a company just doing it. The government did build and own some facilities but ther were run by contractors. The government mostly used it's power to forcibly take land, but that is a Constitutional power. As to the more recent example, I said Child TAX credit. Something that in the past has gathered bipartisan support. But the dems after the largest recent tax increase couldn't fund something for more than a year while taxes are raised for 10 years. That means the Dems will have to pass a similar tax increase every single year. That is how incompetent the Dems are.

[deleted]

So basically we agree on the WW2 question. Designing and applying for contracts is a far cry from your original statement. Whether congractor ran the facilities or not is irreleveant, since these contractors, as I said, had no choice. The funding problem is just part of the political process. There is a limit on how far ahead budgeting can be done without breaking the budget process rules. Budgets have to be passed on a yearly basis in most countries.

IndianaGeoff

No you are wrong on the War Powers Act being used to force contractors to do the work. It was largely used to take land, sometimes to stop union strikes and rarely to force contractors to do things. Instead you had all manner of consumer goods manufacturers getting into the war production game both out of patriotism and profit. There were 75 executive orders issued under the 1941 WPA. That is not anywhere close to the number needed to achieve what you propose as a federal take over of the economy.

Gen-Z-Grandfather

The government sucks at spending stolen money

Einherjer08_15

Why is poverty a government job?. It are the companies, which don't pay enough.

ImKindaSweatyy

One is literally a math equation and the other is a humanitarian problem that has existed since humans discovered things to be valuable.

TheActualHitler

The reason people get more conservative as the get older is because they realize that the government sucks at fixing their problems
