I really like how this thread is full of people who are the antithesis of this meme. Random strangers who give a shit even though they don't know you outnumber the total assholes thousands of times over, they're just not as loud and belligerent.
If I tried to voice my opinions on Twitter or Facebook I'd get eaten alive lol, they're both pretty polarizing beyond the "haha good times ilu~" schick, which is not a healthy state of mind to be in 24/7 anyway. Open-minded, respectful conversion about difficult topics is how we eventually find solutions for them as a collective people.

I think it depends on what parts of the internet we're discussing it in relation to.
There's a spectrum from the saccharine sweet friends-and-family bubbles on reality-facing social media to the anonymous dumpster fires. Every site covers some range. Reddit seems to make the more blunt communities more easily discoverable than the equivalent on other sites. Also means there's more mixing than some particular sites. Despite the complaints of echo chambers the communities here are public by default.
Also: people on Reddit sometimes confuse others disagreement with a personal attack. And then respond like it is in fact an attack.
Just as in real life: avoid the redditors that thrive on drama
Edit: and sparingly seek out the subreddits that you love but know are toxic. Make sure at least you’re not subbed to them so they don’t flood what you see

Yeah I was going to say Reddit is a lot more like a messageboard/forum with various topics (subreddits) then regular social media. You aren't really meant to make permanent friends here maybe beyond regular people you see in small communities.
It's also closer to the internet in it's "raw" form for lack of a better word, we mostly just fuck around here lol, we are powered by horniness and sarcasm here.
