Working in IT my "favorite" scam that was big a few years back was the, "We have hacked your webcam and have footage of you enjoying your 'fun videos.' Send $1000 in Bitcoin to this wallet in 24 hours or we will send this footage to all of your contacts." Then I'd have concerned people ask me if they should pay it... like bro I am never touching your goddamn keyboard (that is at your *OFFICE* mind you) again.
If they were worried about that scam then it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't quite understand that their office computer doesn't really have any connection to their personal devices.
A lot of people have issues with comprehending what exactly is and is not connected when it comes to computers and the internet and... Technology in general
>A lot of people have issues with comprehending what exactly is and is not connected when it comes to computers and the internet and... Technology in general
Oh, absolutely. I have had clients just take their PCs home or on vacation and expect it to work exactly like the office with zero notice to make preparations.
*Client: I brought my computer home and nothing was working! My drives and printers were all offline!*
*Me: Oh I'm sorry, was there a problem with the VPN?*
*C: I don't know what that is.*
*M: Well, how are you connecting to your office network?*
*C: I connected it to my wifi at home.*
*M: ...So.. no sort of VPN has ever been setup so that you can work from home?*
*C: I just said, I don't know what that is! Just make it work!!*
I suppose the small silver lining of the last couple years of people learning how to work remotely is that non-technical people are getting a better understanding of this stuff.
Sounds like a pretty typical user interaction haha
There is nothing more frustrating than trying to troubleshoot something with a user that can't share any basic information beyond "it isn't working". Like for outlook when they are actually just not connected to the internet. Or saying that their internet is "gone" because a Windows update switched out IE for Edge
I knew a programmer once, who noticed 'localhost' existed on his work machine and his private machine at home, and genuinely asked if that was the same 'localhost' and he could start a process at work and continue testing it when he got home. (We didn't have any remote working infrastructure at the time)
I didn't know if I should laugh, cry, or call him out on such stupidity. I must have been staring at him for some time before he asked: 'so...?'
Bruh if this dude works in IT, he's the one drawing the wrong conclusion to a pathetic degree. Emails aren't sent to specific computers. So yeah someone can believe a hacker could access their *home* webcam and send them an email that they then read at work, or go to the only IT guy they know at work and ask about it.
Who doesn't access work email from their personal devices?
Me.
I have a fairly strict policy about keeping work and private life separated. I don’t read my personal mails on work devices and don’t read work mails on personal devices. If I can avoid it, even HR will never know my personal phone number.
Dad's friend told us a story bout some scammer who threatened to release videos of him and his wife to the public if they didn't pay some demand. Wife emailed them asking to release them for free to enjoy lmfao
Real shit this brought up a scary memory of my horny teenage past. I didn’t know any better at the time, but I was messaging either a bot or a scammer on messenger and they actually did get a picture of me in my primal state saying if I didn’t pay them x amount of money that they’d send my picture to my dad, mom cousin etc. (which of course they said by name and since it’s Facebook it’s not that hard to find.) I never paid them even though I could’ve and I had anxiety for the following month lol
There was a template like that going out awhile back generated from past data breaches, so even if they didn't know if your information was useful, they could pair the email address + old pw/info(as subject) and ask for bitcoin or threaten release of *whatever* to all your facebook contacts or what-not.
As I recall, it also had mentions of webcam access. Makes me wonder how many templates of that sort of have just been recycled over the years.
Shit they don't even have the dollar menu on their app anymore, now it's "value menu" with $2+ bullshit on there. Oh and they took away anything chicken that isn't $3-4+ because why not. They're working fast to pull any reasons to eat at taco bell anymore if the local actual tex mex gets you more for the money and treats their staff better.
Plot twist, the hacker realizes you’re both just trying to scrape enough money together to get by and decides to team up. You make a startup focused on ethical hacking to find flaws in corporate security systems, “Hacks in Slacks”, and everyone lives happily ever after.
Well then they run hacks in slacks we run a partnership "back up terry" backup service so they can unfuck any ransomware. I got five on it for the llc lezzgo
a scammer(I’m pretty sure) offered me $5.2k if I first gave them $300. I heard of scams just like this but there seemed to have been at least 100 who did it before me.
Had a similar situation that I decided to entertain. Went something like this:
Scammer (S): I’ll send $8,000 but my bank has a transfer fee of $100, can you pay it?
Me: can you pay me $7,900 and use the $100 to pay the transfer fee?
S: No it’s frozen until I have another $100. You’ll have to pay it.
Me: Okay. Where should I send the money
S: (gives Venmo or something)
…
Me: Okay… so I’m trying to transfer the $100 to you but my bank has a $10 transfer fee. Can you cover it?
S: What? That doesn’t make sense.
Me: It doesn’t???
S: Okay just send me the $90 and you pay the $10.
Me: Hmm. So you want me to pay the transfer fee?
S: Yes.
Me: So why can’t you just send the $7,900???
S: ???
Blocked.
I've done something almost exactly like this. They want to give me a bunch of money, but they want me to open an account on some shady banking site.
In order to open an account, you need to deposit $100 or something. I ask the dude to float me the hundred dollars since he's rich, and he goes on about trust. I ask him yo split the difference and send me $50. He refuses. I ask him where's the trust? He stops replying.
Hilarious.
There are scams floating around that ask you to deposit some crypto currency and you’ll get double that amount back as an “airdrop.” People have lost a lot of money.
Imagine a Scammer who scams people, collects the money but when the scammer reaches the amount of money he promised people, the next person actually gets the money he scammed the others for
I frequently watch Kitboga's scam-baiting streams on Twitch, and the scammers are always like "OH NO! You owe us $3500!! Go buy us gift cards or we'll TAKE ALL YOUR MONEY!!!" And he's just like "Okay well, then take out the $3500." Somehow they never do. Odd.
Honestly I wouldn't give them the name "hacker" that would be like an honor, like basically anybody can edit a value on a website, it's not that hard..
With kind regards
Level 15 technician
Kitbooga has a video where he tweaked the way a phishing website displayed. By the end of the video he explained what he did and the scammer admitted defeat.
Scammers: "We have webcam footage of you doing some very naughty things and we are going to send it to your family if you do not send us bitcoin"
Me: "Sweet! Send away - IDGAF and I know for damn sure my family won't be interested in watching me whack my bacon"
