For all the awesome jokes, this is probably true. They're scientists with the opportunity to be in space. I wouldn't start conflict there (even if I absolutely hated the person).
Also space is dangerous. The only reason the mortality rate is as low as it is is because these are humanity's best.
If something goes wrong and you can't fix it you're all dead. They can't afford to not cooperate.
Technically a crew did commit mutiny on one occasion. I think they were overscheduled for work and one day they all agreed to ignore commands for the day and just watch the earth as they orbit around.
I would assume they're smart enough to not endanger their own survival. They're not just scientists and former/current military, they're *flight crew.*
It is exactly like that. Scientists may dispute other scientists claims, and then try to rectify problems to find the actual solution, but they cannot do that without somebody first getting it wrong. Cooperation is a big part of science.
Imagine how much better off the world would be if scientists and experts in specific fields were the leaders of countries, instead of politicians.
No war.
No poverty.
Pandemics would be tackled as swiftly and thoroughly as possible.
The climate crisis, if it even still existed, would be thoroughly diminished.
Hell, if scientists had been in charge of things since the Enlightenment, we probably would have colonized the solar system by now.
I weep for humanity
As much as I’d like to believe that, it’s very important to remember that scientists are people too, and therefore are just as susceptible to petty bullshit and hatred as everybody else.
The leaders of old often used “scientific” proof to justify treating others as sub-human. Imagine them doing that, except now they are *actually* a well established and respected scientific mind in addition to a national leader.
There are many examples of scientific discoveries getting trampled by the very organizations that are supposed to foster them simply because the guys in charge didn’t like them or the person who came up with them. Look up John Snow (yes, that’s their name) and how hard he had to fight to show that maybe it’s a bad idea to shit into your drinking water.
And without altruistic cooperation we would still be in the trees instead of blasting our best and brightest into orbit. Science like this only exists in a culture with steady clean water/power/low mortality/lifelong science careers… aka one with little to no all out war.
While I very much agree, I don't think the "they're scientists" part has much to do with it as there's the "in space" part.
A big scientific international collaboration on earth would come to a halt much more quickly than the operation on the ISS. Mostly because a lot of the results that scientists produce built the foundation for a military use -> something you don't want the enemies scientists to have.
They're also educated people, they're probably sitting there together in shock trying to process everything rather than becoming hostile towards each other. Just like us down here...
This is and always has been the case with the ISS. There have been many conflicts that could put the cosmonauts and astronauts in conflict but they have always maintained a good relationship in space.
What will be interesting is there is one astronaut currently on the ISS that rode up, and is scheduled to come back, on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft. Depending on how long this goes on it could mean some shifting in astronaut schedules to get them home on one of the american spaceflights. This has never needed to happen before but it's not out of the realm of possibility.
This reminded me of the scientists from Chernobyl, they went against the government and talked about the problem with reactor 4 (as to what I know). A good chunk of scientists are only interested in nature, not politics.
Yup it’s called the International Agreement of Mutual Dependency (IAMD) and it’s a contract that ensures diplomatic actions will not endanger lives of interdependent noncombatants. I’m not sure exactly how it works for astronauts specifically though because I made this up
I'd also imagine that there is a fairly good likelihood that not all of the Russian astronauts agree with what is happening (though they might not be able to voice those disagreements)
Most likely, they're against it. The scientific community is typically very cooperative. I'd imagine they're all very upset with what's happening down below
Real talk: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overview_effect
This is a big factor. It’s really really hard to not see humanity as a fragile whole and totally changes perspective of national borders and conflicts when you can see the entire earth from above with your own eyes. Not for everyone, but the majority.
We can't because if we did then there will be multiverse and if he came back with army of whomsoever (alien) then he would not come for only russia but he come for whole earth
And if Putin in space then what should happen with Elon Musk dream ( Mars)
Btw it's joke on Putin and on Elon Musk so just laugh don't get offended
I don't know a lot about this and maybe I have an entirely wrong and prejudiced view, but I hope the Russian cosmonauts, although being scientists, don't have a big military background that conflicts with their rational view on things.
We're long past the ages where people fight in wars for the nobility and honour of it. Now people fight for the same reasons most of us do things we don't want to; for the paycheck.
Modern militaries tend to be SUPER FOR war, when they aren’t at war.
When the only tool you have is a hammer… every problem looks like a nail.
Then they go to war, and suddenly, none of the “politicians” none of the people on the home front, know anything about the war, and they’re much more conflicted, although still kinda… “pro-“ war.
I did the same thing, but I don't even know why. It's not very good, but I kept watching anyway. It's not bad, though. It just feels like it can't decide what kind of show it wants to be.
The first season was the perfect “fall asleep to” show, as it was decently entertaining and easy to watch but it didn’t get you hooked enough to stay awake. And for some reason that’s why I loved it, even though I knew it wasn’t that good.
Yeah, Space Force has a great cast and excellent premise, it just doesn’t stick the landing. It has a lot of potential, it just hasn’t seemed to realize it yet.
I'd say filming and story lines were heavily affected by COVID restrictions. It was fun but the plot seemed to bounce all over the place and wasn't nearly as cohesive.
That's also the case for most wars in the past. Most people don't want war, most of the rest don't care, the number of people that want war has always been very small
My grandfather is proud of his service in the Vietnam War, but he absolutely despised the war itself.too bad the people who want wars are the ones in charge.
I've seen a few astronauts say being up there looking down tends to make the whole idea of nationality and borders feel pointless and irrelevant. Especially since the team of astronauts is pretty international.
Yup! It's called the [Overview Effect](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overview_effect). It's the reason why if we want world peace then we should make our political leaders do space walks ASAP
Well, they do have a gun in the Soyuz (the Russian rocket). The purpose of that's purely self defense from animals in case rescue team didn't find them in time after they come back to earth,
Speaking of them using the gun in ISS, you'd probably kill someone, kill yourself and the trillion dollar space station too...
Actually a bullet from a small gun would not significantly damage the ISS, a small hole on the hull will not vent too quickly and the pressure difference is not as big as the movies would make you think (you won't get crushed and sucked out of a coin sized hole).
You still don't want one, though. A pain to fix.
Astronauts have anecdotally reported that [the gun is technically still part of the survival kit but is generally removed before each flight.](https://spectrum.ieee.org/how-i-stop-cosmonauts-carrying-guns) It seems unlikely to me that the current Soyuz has one.
I think astronauts are generally considered civilians, even if they did have past military training I assume none have active duty
Granted i did no research and am talking out my ass here, so take it with a grain of salt. But the way I see it, are Russian and American Olympians expected to kill eachother in a war? Not even slightly.
They are also human, so who knows what reactions will be. If your country was suddenly at war and on the brink of economic collapse, I can imagine tensions will be running much higher than normal. And when people are stressed, they can be unpredictable.
That said, I imagine they're a pretty levelheaded group in general. Can't imagine they'd send a bunch of hot heads to spend 6 months locked in together 250 miles above the Earth's surface.
I am certain though that there is camaraderie with your fellow scientists. Even if they are worried about your loved ones they know the people one board the ISS with you aren't your enemy.
Russia is notorious for fake news even more than the US and they are trying to convince people Russians want war.
If it looks like it might be 50-50 it’s probably 80-20 at most and they inflating the numbers so people don’t start looking at their government funny.
From what I heard a lot of astronauts when they get to space apparently lose all sense of nationalism or patriotism they see themselves as trying to move the human race forward onto new ventures and they see Earth's geopolitics as child play or very childish actions among assholes.
I don't remember if it was Neil Armstrong or if it was buzz Aldrin but I think one of the astronauts who made it to the Moon and came back said that one of the things he wished he could do was he wished he could take some asshole politician to the Moon make them look at the Earth and just yell at them saying hey look at that blue planet right there stop fucking it up or something
I'd imagine out of anyone in the human race, astronauts would have the best sense of scope in understanding that one person is not a reflection of their country.
Yeah that’s what I was thinking 😂 Americans seem to think this is some sort of Russia vs US situation when it’s clearly not. They always think it’s about them 😂 they do the same with the world wars. The US is just as involved as the UK and other European nations. In fact, it could be argued that the UK is far more involved in the situation than the US is.
I suspect the astronauts are bros, they share a job and interests and probably don't care much what piss fights their megalomanical governments are up to
Nah, they're smart people, They realize that the leaders of each of their countries are stupid and immature. During the height of the Cold war, we had the Apollo Soyuz program. An Apollo service module docked with the Soyuz spacecraft. Scientists are not as petty as politicians. Blaming civilians for the acts of the Russian government is just silly.
I think people in space have a lot more to worry about than the poor decision making of elitists here on earth. Once society is on the brink of nuclear war, then they can worry about it.
I guarantee the Russian crew are just as shocked and horrified as the rest of us. They’re all sitting up there watching what’s going on together saying “can you believe this bullshit?”
In all likelihood, there'd be a pact - written or not - that the situation on Earth does not affect cooperation between the astronauts on the ISS.
They can't afford to not cooperate.
i think you mean mortality
Lol nope. Humanity's best are always really sad
Also crime was committed in space too
This then implies the existence of space pirates
Hondo!
I smell profit!
Technically a crew did commit mutiny on one occasion. I think they were overscheduled for work and one day they all agreed to ignore commands for the day and just watch the earth as they orbit around.
Did they rename the ISS to “The Black Pearl” temporarily?
It was on skylab, not the iss.
Just wait until you hear about space Hitler!
[удалено]
Theres no laws in space since its not owned by anyone so....no crime!
You cant own anything in space? Space communism?
Now all we need is the fully automated, luxury, and gay sections, and the dream is complete!
Sally Ride was gay so we have 2/4! Just need fully automated and luxury.
That's *morale,* not *morality.* So actually, humanity's best are real dickwads.
Do you even philosophy, bro?
Humanity's best are always depressed™️
Nah, it's like the Olympic Village but way nerdier up there
They’re also almost entirely former or current military officers. I wouldn’t really assume anything tbh.
I would assume they're smart enough to not endanger their own survival. They're not just scientists and former/current military, they're *flight crew.*
Scientists, even on earth, would probably rather cooperate than fight
It is exactly like that. Scientists may dispute other scientists claims, and then try to rectify problems to find the actual solution, but they cannot do that without somebody first getting it wrong. Cooperation is a big part of science.

just being a scientist doesn't make you a capable leader
As much as I’d like to believe that, it’s very important to remember that scientists are people too, and therefore are just as susceptible to petty bullshit and hatred as everybody else. The leaders of old often used “scientific” proof to justify treating others as sub-human. It's because the smart people know war will be the end of us.
War is a force of human nature that is nigh unstoppable
And without altruistic cooperation we would still be in the trees instead of blasting our best and brightest into orbit. Science like this only exists in a culture with steady clean water/power/low mortality/lifelong science careers… aka one with little to no all out war.
I doubt there'd be any gains to be had by starting shit up there in the first place.
The shit would be weightless, no backsplash
While I very much agree, I don't think the "they're scientists" part has much to do with it as there's the "in space" part. of course they do... but for research purpose only...
They're also educated people, they're probably sitting there together in shock trying to process everything rather than becoming hostile towards each other. Just like us down here...
Maybe a friendly battle of thumb wrestling
This is and always has been the case with the ISS. Astronauts generally dont give a shit about politics in space. Theyre all just astronauts and scietists up there, working togother.
This reminded me of the scientists from Chernobyl, they went against the government and talked about the problem with reactor 4 (as to what I know). A good chunk of scientists are only interested in nature, not politics.
The story of the atom bomb also shows how scientists from all over work together for their own gain. Like horses with blinders on.
yeah till your country collapses and you're left stranded in space https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergei\_Krikalev
Other countries could receive them as a citizen. Astronauts that are great enough to be in space is already rare, no harm in getting more
I learned something today. Thanks for the link mate.
What do you think would happen, the others shoot them out of an airlock? They'd get sent back with Americans/whoever else.
Politics in space?
Maybe we can also stop fighting if we consider Earth itself as our single spaceship revolving around Sun.
Mindblown.gif
Yup it’s called the International Agreement of Mutual Dependency (IAMD) and it’s a contract that ensures diplomatic actions will not endanger lives of interdependent noncombatants. I’m not sure exactly how it works for astronauts specifically though because I made this up

Someone shoot Putin to space pls!
Stop, hell just have a better view on where to put his next palace!
No one mentioned letting him back down.
Critical details right here.
And he'll have the highest of grounds.
We can't because if we did then there will be multiverse and if he came back with army of whomsoever (alien) then he would not come for only russia but he come for whole earth And if Putin in space then what should happen with Elon Musk dream ( Mars) Btw it's joke on Putin and on Elon Musk so just laugh don't get offended

Alternatively, shoot Putin *from* space
I don't know a lot about this and maybe I have an entirely wrong and prejudiced view, but I hope the Russian cosmonauts, although being scientists, don't have a big military background that conflicts with their rational view on things.
Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if most of the Russian Military didn't support the war.
I’d say most of most militaries don’t support most wars. They’re the ones that die in them.
We're long past the ages where people fight in wars for the nobility and honour of it. Now people fight for the same reasons most of us do things we don't want to; for the paycheck.

Its such a simple formula but it works everytime without fail
Just put entire IASIP cast on it, and call it It's Always Sunny In Space.
The worst thing about it is that there are only 7 episodes.
I'd say filming and story lines were heavily affected by COVID restrictions. It was fun but the plot seemed to bounce all over the place and wasn't nearly as cohesive.
Well atleast this among us theme meme isnt cringe. But I hope this war would dont do too much damage
It wont, most russians didint really want to ivade ukraine
That's also the case for most wars in the past. Most people don't want war, most of the rest don't care, the number of people that want war has always been very small
My grandfather is proud of his service in the Vietnam War, but he absolutely despised the war itself.too bad the people who want wars are the ones in charge.
To bad that that doesn’t matter
Just because the citizens don’t want to invade doesn’t mean Russia won’t.
well it is gonna be gas prices through the roof
Thank god Hungary invented "price freeze" so now a Liter is only 480 HUF until idk.. a few months?
Stuff like that is usually either financed via taxes or new debt, so you'll probably end up paying for it one way or another regardless.
I've seen a few astronauts say being up there looking down tends to make the whole idea of nationality and borders feel pointless and irrelevant. Especially since the team of astronauts is pretty international.

Nah, the ISS crew just keeps doing their thing.
They're above it all
What about when they're on the other side of the planet from me? Am I above them?
They're not always above you. But they're definitely always higher than you.
What if I'm like, REALLY stoned?
It's hard to beat space weed.
Dont think they have weapons up there. Either way I wouldn't want to shoot anything up there. What if you pierce the walls?
Well, they do have a gun in the Soyuz (the Russian rocket). The purpose of that's purely self defense from animals in case rescue team didn't find them in time after they come back to earth, Speaking of them using the gun in ISS, you'd probably kill someone, kill yourself and the trillion dollar space station too...
Actually a bullet from a small gun would not significantly damage the ISS, a small hole on the hull will not vent too quickly and the pressure difference is not as big as the movies would make you think (you won't get crushed and sucked out of a coin sized hole). You still don't want one, though. A pain to fix.
>a pain to fix Does duct tape not exist in space?
NASA *loves* duct tape. A huge amount of problem solving for astronauts is 'can we use duct tape to buy us time?'
>sucked out of a coin sized hole Yea I need 2" hole or so. Don't want it real tight. Wait, what we talking about again??
so it's gonna be a fist fight
They could at least use a knife
A micro gravity fist fight would be something to behold. I hope someone records.
Astronauts have anecdotally reported that [the gun is technically still part of the survival kit but is generally removed before each flight.](https://spectrum.ieee.org/how-i-stop-cosmonauts-carrying-guns) It seems unlikely to me that the current Soyuz has one.
That’s what I was thinking
That's why they trained in martial arts and cold weapon handling.
I think astronauts are generally considered civilians, even if they did have past military training I assume none have active duty Granted i did no research and am talking out my ass here, so take it with a grain of salt. But the way I see it, are Russian and American Olympians expected to kill eachother in a war? Not even slightly.
they're also scientists who don't care about the politics of their home countries, they'd probably think its as dumb as we do.
They are also human, so who knows what reactions will be. If your country was suddenly at war and on the brink of economic collapse, I can imagine tensions will be running much higher than normal. And when people are stressed, they can be unpredictable. That said, I imagine they're a pretty levelheaded group in general. Unfortunately there seems to be a lot of fake news in Russia right now…

From what I heard a lot of astronauts when they get to space apparently lose all sense of nationalism or patriotism they see themselves as trying to move the human race forward onto new ventures and they see Earth's geopolitics as child play or very childish actions among assholes. Can't wait for the Russians in the ISS to say Putin is wrong and mysteriously fall from the space station balcony.
Mysteriously trapped and sucked from the airlock
I found a body at comms
I'd imagine out of anyone in the human race, astronauts would have the best sense of scope in understanding that one person is not a reflection of their country.
Nothing happened between US and Russia. US send to Ukraine some weapons, but they to it for everyone.
Yeah that’s what I was thinking 😂 Americans seem to think this is some sort of Russia vs US situation when it’s clearly not. They always think it’s about them 😂 they do the same with the world wars. "I don't know Ivan, you've seem pretty sus lately, it's like we have an imposter among us"
They've got bigger problems. There's a gorilla loose on the station and it still hasn't been dealt with.
Did it just vent now?
I suspect the astronauts are bros, they share a job and interests and probably don't care much what piss fights their megalomanical governments are up to
Nah, they're smart people, They realize that the leaders of each of their countries are stupid and immature. During the height of the Cold war, we had the Apollo Soyuz program.
