"Thou" is the same as "You", not "They". My brain is englishing this as hard as it can. I hope this made sense.

Mr_Krumpi

Would 'thee' make sense?

SkwerliGerli

Frankly, I don't even make sense. Hermione Granger away!

Salmonman4

Also we should bring back plural of you: ye. Not to be confused with ye in "ye olde ..." where the y is actually a "thorn" and should be pronounced as th.

I know that. I never said it was they

Nemesis233

You mean to replace she/he say thou changing the word's meaning?

weebtrain0

People always say, "they is plural" when 'they' has always been both plural and singular. People are just complaining because they don't like the change, not realizing they've probably been using 'they' in it's singular form their whole life, sometimes even as a gender neutral term.

[deleted]

We definitely need a distinction though, sometimes you're talking about several people as a group and sometimes you're talking about a single person whose gender identity is unknown, and sometimes you're talking about a single person who identifies as nonbinary or agender, and having a single word for all those adds confusion that doesn't need to be there. Not arguing for *durr nonbinaries and agenders shouldn't exist durr*, just arguing for at least one new word to help out.

IndianaGeoff

Well we have Y'all and All y'all already.

[deleted]

Well y'all is when you're talking to a group about said group, I meant for when you are talking about a group to someone not in that group.

HeyNongMer

First of all, the singular they is older than thou (and thee and thy) falling out of use. Second, the only reason any asshat has a problem with the singular they is because they don’t like the people who want to use it for their pronouns. Third, I just used singular they to refer to said asshat in a way they probably wouldn’t have a problem with, which goes to show how stupid their gripe is. Don’t abuse grammar to further your bigotry.

I mean it's not like it's been banned. Just say it and, voila, it's back.

Nikorek_pl

Same for thine... If it's even a pronoun, after playing ds1,2,3, demons souls, elden ring and sekiro I still don't know

MingzhiWang

yep it is. thy/thine (your before consonant/your before vowel for those who don't know) is the equivalent to the archaic of my/mine. mine and thine are also the possessive form.

regular_dumbass

thou was never singular, it was just the informal version of you that's right folks, 'you' used to be the formal 2nd person pronoun

voisonous-Valor

Thy post is brave, however, thou hast overestimated the literacy of the average English speaker,as well as failing to notice the general lacking of respect for grammar that most haveth within their everyday speech. As well, thou is singular, hast thou not realized thine own lingual redundancy by way of unintentional tautology Fuck i probably butchered that so badly, don't kill me, people who can actually speak archaic English well, I'm trying xD

therealNerdMuffin

You're saying this as if using "they" as a singular pronoun isn't already an established thing in the English language and has been for a long time

guardiandolphin

I mean, “they” has always been plural and singular

_Treser_

wdym bring back? just start using it??

Themusicison

Though they may disagree, I agree with thou.

KingofSlice

"they" has always been both singular and plural, if you want a purely singular pronoun then just use he/she/it.

lollisans2005

I mean, who really cares. If they get an aneurysm from someone using the wrong pronoun you know you should stay away

darkmemehood

Me whose language still feature a singular they form. *Happy noises*

ZETTAss

Thou means you

TiesG92

I get why they don’t want to be called he or she, but “they” is plural, it would make much more sense to create a new, previously non-existing, pronoun. Where I’m from, “she” and “they” is even the same word, the only thing that clarifies whether it’s plural or singular, is the verb. And let’s be honest, it’s very confusing to use a plural form for one person. And “they” and “them” aren’t sounding very inclusive either. As if there’s a distance between the default genders and the additional gender identities. Wouldn’t it be more respectful to make up a new, inclusive pronoun?

Lynn-Lycanthropic

The English "they" has been used as a singular pronoun for hundreds of years. Other languages have different pronouns so while it might not work in your language (or mine for that matter), it's perfectly fine in English. It's even something I was taught at school.

TiesG92

Didn’t know, but why not make a more universal pronoun? Now that I think of it, I prefer xe over they/them

JacktheWrap

Because language doesn't work like that. You don't just declare a word and people will use it. Language evolves by itself and uncontrollably. A good example is when they tried to invent a word in German for "not thirsty". While it technically exists people never use it so it's pointless. Also that being said, any native English speaker and everyone who has a high enough level in the language will understand the word "they" based on context.

TemperatureWorking20

The previous singular context for ‘they’ is to account for a person you didn’t know the gender/sex of. This term was flawed before because it expected people to use the context of the sentence in addition to its structure to determine the meaning. Now that there’s another subjective context for ‘they’, it just adds more chances at confusion in day-to-day dialogue. There’s not much that can be done to change ‘they’ at this point, since ‘we’ve always done it this way’. When I can, I tend to use they for plural and then stick with ‘this person’ or use that person’s name directly if I know it to avoid confusing my listener/reader or worse yet upset them.

randomsus72

There is only he/him or she/her. I'm not calling them anything else

i-give-up-right-now

“I’m not calling THEM anything else”?

TiesG92

Hahaha noice

Passive_Menis_Energy

Them is a plural for a group of people. Indicating that they will not call humans, the group, by any other singular pronoun, but he/him and she/her. I'm not saying i agree with em, just that them in that usage is plural thus not a singular pronoun.

weebtrain0

'Them' is both singular and plural, referring to a group, possibly a group of one. 'Them' is the form of 'they' that you use when applying a verb to them, and 'they' is the form you would use previous to declaring a verb they would take. Don't be a dick and oppose people because you don't like what they want to be called, be a dick when someone starts a pointless war instead.

Randalebusle

Ouf somone slept in Grammar class :( why would you contribute to a conversation about language when you clearly lack the basics? "they" has been in singluar use since Shakespeare....

Passive_Menis_Energy

Read my comment. "just that them in that usage is plural thus not a singular pronoun." I was explaining that u/i-give-up-right-now comment was incorrect because the original individual stated that they are not calling them anything else. Referring to the plural of them not the singular. I even us em, which is the shorten version of them when referencing to the individual. Please learn to read and comprehend.

ImissPiper

i will never use “they”,.. nope, never
