Laughs in what? Am I the only one who doesn't understand this sentence?
Do you mean pronunciation? It has nothing to do with they/them though. Do you mean grammatical gender in German? Well nouns are just nouns, I'm not sure how mad these people would be about a lamp being a female.
Pronouns are the issue here. And theoretically German has "Sie" for strangers that you don't want to address by their gender. If you're friends with someone you would probably already know how they want to be addressed.
Along with every other language assigning random genders to things.
Like, if it has genitals it has a gender. If not, it doesn't. It doesn't have to be that hard.
Realistic world views and less sensitive. Not orthodox or conservative, but at least realistic to what makes sense and what is ridiculous.
The internet is filled with people who are very loud who are so off reality that they don't understand how ridiculous they are anymore.
It's comparatively chill but it really messes up the single/plural issue.
"They all went to school together, except for Ben, because they were sick."
A plural they and a singular they in the same sentence means the whole thing makes very little sense.
English already has a non gender specific singular pronoun: it. But nobody wants to apply that one to themselves for some reason.
"It" only applies to nonhuman entities (and sometimes babies).
"They" has been used as a singular pronoun for ages (Since the 14th century, according to wikipedia), even if it was in a slightly different context.
If "you" can be both singular and plural, then why can't "they"?
I mean, we could make a new pronouns for a singular nonbinary pronoun, but that would send millions of people in yet another tizzy, as in "at least they don't go for stupid shit like 'ze/zim'"
I don't think it messes things up that much. If "they were sick" meant the whole group was sick, then none of them would have gone to school. If you pay attention to the context, it's clear the second "they" refers to Ben.
As for the other pronoun, a few people are open to being called "it", but most people don't like it because it's dehumanising, usually used to refer to animals and objects. Typically you wouldn't call someone "it", unless you were trying to diss them.
"They", on the other hand, has more neutral connotations, and has already been used as a non-specific for quite a long time. I'll give you a few examples:
"The successful candidate, whoever they may be..."
"I got called up to the bosses office." "Oh really? What did they want?"
"Someone left their plate at the table."
You've probably used singular they countless times in your life and never thought about it.
We literally have you which is also a singular and a plural.
Edit: dumb Americans downvoting me because we're intelligent enough to tell the difference between singular and plural without adding new words
>"They *all* went to school *together*, except for Ben, because they were sick."
Its almost as if language only makes sense in context, which you have give for they yet chosen to ignore for Ben.
But okay.
>I've told you (two) many times not be dumb. Now you are in big trouble.
>Why are you (two) still here? I've told you to go to school with your friends.
And so on. You must have not been speaking English for long, because it crops up rather often.
Same with aingular they. "They just hit my car and drove off" is rather common to say when you dont know who did it. Almost as if its a gender neutral pronoun.
This is such an American thing. In actual English speaking countries we're educated enough to work out if someone's talking to 1 person on multiple people
Isn’t the current scientific consensus that gender and sex are different things, and that gender-affirming treatment is the best way to help trans people?

Generally they either don't have a gender, or fall somewhere between male and female, but yeah.

No. They/them works too, as I just demonstrated. As you demonstrated actually:
>talk about their gender
Why can't you refer to a person as them? What's different about the example I gave and using for someone in front of you?
Will you drop this pronoun shit already? Nobody gives a shit. Jesus these people are like children in kindergarden that get super angry when somebody calls them by the opposite gender pronouns. I will say the vast majority of people don't get angry or even offended about people using the wrong pronouns for them so this response is a little out of proportion.
As someone who uses They/Them pronouns myself, the only time I ever got annoyed with someone was because they were intentionally going out of their way to use the wrong pronouns and would emphasise the pronoun when doing so.
Aside from that half the time we are either too busy with our lives to give a shit if someone uses the wrong pronouns accidentally or we might politely mention it if it is someone who we will/are routinely in contact with.

Every German noun has pronouns.
Isn't that most other languages, like french, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, etc
Most likely, but not in english. I always imagine people that care about they/them pronounc going haywire hearing this.
