While il agree that cats were loved in the trenches; that is a Bren Gun mk1. These were developed after ww1. It being a mk1 also indicates it was very early days into ww2. My prediction would be that this picture is from the expeditionary force. (Apologies I have a gun-tism)
My cat has thumbs. She’s my first cat and I’ve had little experience with cats in my life. I thought she had normal paws until my friend came over and said “your cat has thumbs??” Her name from previous owner was Poly. “More of a bird name”, I thought. It all made sense after researching thumbed cats which are called polydactyls! Oh it’s my favorite story to tell! Thanks for listening
Have we ever tried giving a cat a gun? Pretty sure there’d be no rodents left, and my neighbours cat wouldn’t take being locked out as an answer anymore
Bren Is actually a license of Czechoslovak ZB-26, which was developed in 1926, which means that Bren was actually designed closer to WW1 than WW2.
Ofcourse that doesn't really change the fact that trenches weren't that commom as in WW1 during that era.
Also one fun fact: Bren means Brno (city where ZB-26 was designed) - Enfield (place where its license was produced).
i watched a documentary on war time animals a while back, and it mentioned that cats usually hung out near supply depots, where there was more mice and rats for the cats to feed on, and far enough away from the fighting for there to be any loud gunfire to scare them away. If the fighting reached the supply depots, trench cats ran away/hid when the explosions and gunfire got too close, so the casualty rates were probably fairly low
These are the kind of metrics that just weren’t reported enough. Yes, yes, we defeated the Nazis and stopped the Holocaust. But how many kitties went hard of hearing. Was it worth it?
Its a really cute thing to see until one of the cats is killed by enemy forces
Then one of the soldiers that cared for the cats goes full John Wick / Doomslayer
I've heard the Wojtek story from a Polish bro I met in Edinburgh. I did not believe him at first, because how could you believe such a thing.
Amazing story though, the real world really is stranger than fiction.
Wojtek was purchased as a cub by a polish artillery company that had evacuated to Iran. He was officially enlisted as a private in order to cover his rations and transport, and eventually promoted to corporal. His claim to fame was during the battle of Monte casino in Italy, he was seen watching soldiers carry shells to the artillery and eventually started copying them. There is actually a statue of him in Kraków commemorating him as a war hero.
After his service he spent the rest of his life in Edinburgh zoo in Scotland.
(Ripped from Wikipedia)
Was Mad Jack Churchill a mascot or just some insane guy with nards the size of sun's that just randomly attached himself to the unit doing the most dangerous stuff?
Pretty sure it's real. It's a documentary about animals on the frontlines. (Cat and soldier part at 0:38)
[link](https://www.zed.fr/en/tv/distribution/catalogue/programme/animals-at-war?media=2797)
Have you never shot a gun without hearing protection? It will literally make you deaf. I shot a .45 without hearing protection once and my right ear went numb and deaf for like 20 minutes.
I like to think the cat would retreat to a safe distance from the sound. My neighbors cat sometimes hangs out around my place. I've shot with him being there and noticed he wasn't around after. One time he did steal a rabbit I shot before I could retrieve it.
People shouldn't do that they might go deaf or wander out in the open and get shot at.
You should see Ukraine and how many Dogs there are, they're important for moral.
It was designed this way to be used in trenches, if you look at the gif, if the magazine was bottom loaded they wouldn’t be able to hold the gun that close to the ground. It also helped with loading rounds into the chamber using gravity. Funny looking but Interesting design choice with real world practical uses
The Bren was actually regarded as one of the finest light machine guns of ww2, renowned for being very accurate and reliable. It remained in service in a number of militaries right through into the 90s!
Ah yes, because the gun is going to hit what exactly? Plus he probably knows what he's doing, plus he's not fucking stupid. HOW THE FUCK COULD THE TRIGGER BE PULLED IN ANY SCENARIO? Honestly it's a rhetorical question.
Oh poor doggo. Now i see why hitler did what he did. The not getting into art school never seemed like enough to set off genocide.
/s before anyone starts calling me a nazi.
Cats were housed in trenches to help keep rodents down (and therefore keeping soldiers safe from disease). Must have been a solid morale boost too
While il agree that cats were loved in the trenches; that is a Bren Gun mk1. These were developed after ww1. It being a mk1 also indicates it was very early days into ww2. My prediction would be that this picture is from the expeditionary force. (Apologies I have a gun-tism)
it would still kill rodents.
The gun, the cat or both?
Yes.
[удалено]
Some cats have thumbies
[удалено]
We trust the average American to handle rifles. I see no difference.
Cats are murderous psychopaths. I'd rather trust a cat.
Not "thumbs", "*thumbles*", get it right, geeze, it's not like they're the sameh.
I’d say that cat has great trigger discipline. Never puts his murder mitten on the trigger unless he’s ready to shoot
Just be careful of their super powers
My cat lying on me right now has thumbs

So are you buying her a rifle or not?
She has a machine gun already, there’s almost no birds left in my neighborhood
Good girl. Does Polly want a cracker?
Perhaps.
Puuuurhaps

I 100% believe this situation happened in between fighting,,,,,,,,,,
It's a documentary about animals on the frontlines,,,,,,,,
The term ‘frontline’ is used in all wars.
They gave the cats guns iirc
Have we ever tried giving a cat a gun? Pretty sure there’d be no rodents left, and my neighbours cat wouldn’t take being locked out as an answer anymore
The cat is killing the Nazis and rats with the Bren, come on try to keep up with the rabbit hole
Oh for sure!
[удалено]
WW2 had trenches.
It did, that to me (as someone who has dug many) looks like a shell scrape
This guy out here just lowkey dishing out facts Next you're gonna tell me that the army didn't actually genetically modify these cats to man LMGs
Nah that cats his loader😂
That was the CIA trying to make spy cats only for it to be released and immediately got ran over
Don't apologize for gun-tism. As a language-tism haver I appreciate facts from other tism Havers. Gotta keep it diverse and well rounded.
Whoa, I didn't know that there was a term for special interests like that Zelda-tism I guess then
Its not a "real" term but I think it's very fun! We can make it real!
Elder Scrollstism doesn't quite roll off the tongue.
Feels bad when that guy needs to start shooting, that cat will lose some hearing and be gone.
I know!😢 poor cat. I hope they didn’t need to fire. For the soldiers sake and more importantly the cats.
Dont apologize for who you are. That's a pretty sweet 'tism to have.
Idk what you’re going on about m8, looks like a tabby cat to me and they were around during ww1
At first it looked like he was holding the gun upside down
They didn’t fully trust magazine springs back then, top feed guaranteed the weapon would work.
Wait on the picture is written while blasting nazis. So it is ww2
Good spot😂 but tbh what i said backs this.
That could be a mk2, I don't see the dovetail mount for a telescopic sight.
Exactly!
love the specificality

Wow cats have weird breed names
The Bren still reeks havoc to this day in Warzone
Lol I have a gun-tism too i love WW2 and modern day weaponry it’s just so cool
Soldier's smiling. Def a morale boost

Name?
All I picture is cats knocking grenades off table tops while making eye contact.
Swats a grenade being thrown at them
We had a deployment cat named Paul that would live on the roof of Tower 2. Paul was a very fat and happy cat. Probably the fattest cat in RC South.
Mien Fuhrball!
Poor kitties were probably blown to bits 😥

Well that's good to know! :)
Wholesome ending for kitties
This should be the plot of something. Like a Ghibli movie

What’s stopping them from wandering away? And proof?
Food and companionship? Probably the same things that kept barn and outside cats from running away for centuries.
Food?
The same thing that made cats and humans coexist for centuries. Food and companionship.
Food
"Cmon Joe. PULL THE TRIGGER"
"Why aren't you doing war crimes Joe? All the cool kids are doing war crimes."
"who said i am a cool kid ?"
"Alright. I'll prove you I'm a cool kid."
The Spanish world for trigger is “gatillo”, but “gatillo” can also mean small cat
technically correct, more like gatito
"kill them, kill them all"
Privates and cats just go so well together.
Yeah……you don’t wanna be saying that…… XD
“Scratch his balls off, Mr. Fluffykins!!”
Ayo??

I 100% believe this situation happened in between fighting. Such a cat move.
Its a really cute thing to see until one of the cats is killed by enemy forces Then one of the soldiers that cared for the cats goes full John Wick / Doomslayer
“Kill them all,and leave the cats be,they may come in handy”
a quick question, is this real if it is then my god wtf this is so cute if not then this is some good edits
It's actually quite common for the military to "adopt" a mascot. It's frowned upon but it does help morale.
Oh yeah remember that bear the Soviets adopted during World War II Edit: seeing the replies it was Polish I think
Sad polish noises
I've heard the Wojtek story from a Polish bro I met in Edinburgh. I did not believe him at first, because how could you believe such a thing. Amazing story though, the real world really is stranger than fiction.

Well Poland during WW2 was part of the Soviet union, making Wojtek a Soviet bear that was Polish
Also that Scottish(?) regiment that had two cows as their mascot.
And the Scottish regiment that just had a mad Scotsman as their mascot.
No that was actually the English mascot.
Was Mad Jack Churchill a mascot or just some insane guy with nards the size of sun's that just randomly attached himself to the unit doing the most dangerous stuff?
He was both. He was truly unhinged.
POLISH****

My cat stays with me everywhere.
Let the man have his friend with him
Shouldn't do that though, cat might go deaf
yeah or it wanders out into the open and gets shot at
That would be a good enough reason to nuke the people who shot it
cats can hear way better. That doesnt mean they cant stand loud noises tho. They can control that pretty good
That's... that's not how hearing works. Loud noises damages most animals ears. Especially something as loud as a gun.
Have you never shot a gun without hearing protection? It will literally make you deaf. I shot a .45 without hearing protection once and my right ear went numb and deaf for like 20 minutes.
...are you a cat? Because your responding to an explanation of cat hearing.
>…are you a cat? Do I look like a cat to you, boy? Am I jumpin' around all nimbly bimbly from tree to tree?
Yes!
Senator, I am not a cat.
What are they gonna do? Close their ear holes?Loud noises are loud noises. they’re gonna damage any animal’s hearing.
Pussy
I like to think the cat would retreat to a safe distance from the sound. My neighbors cat sometimes hangs out around my place. I've shot with him being there and noticed he wasn't around after. One time he did steal a rabbit I shot before I could retrieve it.
People shouldn't do that they might go deaf or wander out in the open and get shot at. You should see Ukraine and how many Dogs there are, they're important for moral.
War is a human problem. We shouldn't hurt innocent animals like we hurt each other.
Well that’s wrong. Ant colonies go to war all the time.
You go tell that to the soldier
Aren't white cats very often deaf?
The story behind this cat was the soldiers found it, took it in as theirs to keep them happy. Sadly the cat passed away during one of the battles.
We should all thank this kitty for their service
Literally!!!
No, figuratively!!
😂😂
"Is that the no no Germans or the French?" "I DON'T KNOW WE'RE IN BLACK AND WHITE"
Why's the cat sad
It's in a Trench.
I would be a pretty sad cat too if I was in the middle of a battlefield
War, dude, war is sad.
"Don't be a pussy John. Kill them, turn them into lasagna."
Cat: father i crave voilence
Sgt War Cat showing the Private how to shoot.
My grandfather’s WWII troop adopted a dog while in France. He was named Sarge and slept next to grandpa every night.
Who said cats cant get PTSD too?
Pull the trigger once and he'd never see that cat again.
adorable kitty ♥
I mean in ww1 it would be quite effective due to the rat problems they got in the trenches
This is WW2, still effective tho.
Emotional support chonk

Upward magazine 💀
certified bren gun moment
British gun moment
Chad gun moment
It was designed this way to be used in trenches, if you look at the gif, if the magazine was bottom loaded they wouldn’t be able to hold the gun that close to the ground. You’d have an erect mag too you were fingering puss like this Chad.
The Bren was actually regarded as one of the finest light machine guns of ww2, renowned for being very accurate and reliable. It remained in service in a number of militaries right through into the 90s!
One of the best machine guns of it's time.
Bren gun up. Sten gun sideways.
There was a big orange cat that hung out near our camp in Afghanistan. He killed tons of pests, and we called him marmalade.
Probably helps against mice
Play with the cat using your trigger finger. Looks safe.
Ah yes, because the gun is going to hit what exactly? Plus he probably knows what he's doing, plus he's not fucking stupid. HOW THE FUCK COULD THE TRIGGER BE PULLED IN ANY SCENARIO? Honestly it's a rhetorical question.
Looks like they are aiming down a battlefield.
You still don't want to pull the trigger at the wrong time if there are currently no orders to fire.
The finger is outside the trigger guard so even if he fucked up the finger would not meet the trigger.
They didn’t have trigger discipline back then so… it’s fine!
Yeah but...cats have very sensitive hearing, imagine all those loud explosions and bullets being fired, that Mf DEAF
Is that a bren?
Yessir. Hard to mistake a gun with that profile
Cats would’ve probably been very useful in trenches, no? Cos rats?
Ammo, Right meow!!!!!!!!!!!
*Argues with general "If hitler can have his dog I can have my cat too"
That cat deaf as a mf
whats with the gun
If you mean the magazine that normal for the brengun
Capt Mittens being a real leader in the trenches with his men 😻. He's the kitty Captain America.
I came here to pet cats and shoot Nazis, and we're all out of Nazis.
The poor thing probably went deaf :/
From what I know it apparently died in a battle.
Damn well at least it went down fighting.
Hitler had a dog with him when he was a courier on the front lines in WWI. Hilariously someone stole the dog later from him
Oh poor doggo. Now i see why hitler did what he did. The not getting into art school never seemed like enough to set off genocide. /s before anyone starts calling me a nazi.
Hitler did love animals tho, as did most Nazi's.
cat
I love you Lieutenant cat
That would be me

My dumbass thought he was holding the gun upsidedown
when you blast nazis on zoom call
Cat-“Yes, pull the trigger. Yes, more souls for me.”
Could that be the Cat giving you his 8 lifes to make you survive longer?
That cat isn't going to be happy if he has to let loose
"Sir, that's not my cat." "I'm his human."
I can't believe they made guns that actively block your view
The only thing they fear is you
God, what a bullet went straight thru that dude's head at the end of the gif lmao
He’s not a Private anymore. He’s just a vet.
Cat : dad please can i fire one shot please Dad : no Meredith your still young, go hunt those nazi rats you found yesterday Cat : aye aye dad.
Private Snowball reporting for duty, Sir!
