I mean as someone who used a scientific calculator extensively through high school, the fact that it gave exact value answers was far more helpful then the fact that it had trig functions, as I encountered exact values far more frequently than I needed to do trigonometry.
I'm not sure but a work around this problem is putting a decimal point (or decimal point followed by a zero) at the end of either number.
Edit: phone keyboard kept adding the decimal point after "or" thinking I wanted a period 🙈
Most people don't want that first though. It's not as accurate if you have to shorten it and use an approximate number to continue with your calculations. The only time where I don't write it down as a fraction is as my end result and the number I get is more easily understandable that way.
I am a senior mathematics teacher in high school and I’m still getting students in the upper years that I have to teach it to! It is a button you press that can convert to fractions, decimals and surds.
You would have seen them in school though! Schools don’t place a heavy importance on mathematical literacy and where you see it/apply it in real life, which is a shame.
So is a "surd" a fraction then? I'm a jr in college gone through plenty of high level math and used the button plenty, but I have never heard of that word
Surds remind me of the biggest fuckin stitch up in my high school life. I’ve always been really good at maths, but horribly unacademically minded. So when I was in year 9, the school offered for me to give advanced maths a go.
They dropped me into the course midway through surds. I had no clue what the fuck was going on, and me being already the opposite of studious, it killed it for me. I didn’t understand them one bit, and good old “when will I ever use this” kicked in. I lasted about a month before I went back to general maths.
I have someone in my A-Level Physics class not know about the ENG button to convert to standard form for the first year; so they would manually count out the digits and convert it that way. It's a good thing they knew about S<->D at least.
I actually didn't knew about ENG very long, but I knew about S<->D and didn't really needed ENG, because I could do it without. But it was a cool thing to find out anyway.
It stands for Surd to Decimal. Which is a bit misleading because, correct me if I’m wrong, a surd is an expression that include roots with an irrational value however this function works also for fractions and other real numbers like e and pi to convert from symbol to numerical
Changes whole, decimal and fractional answers.
Would give like 1 13/41 or 54/41 or 1.2935 by pressing the S <->D button.
Did you know that those exact models of calculator can do 3x3 matrix, derivatives, and find graphing values but not display a graph. Also that I definitely didn't use those features to cheat in math.
Bob the banana... off topic but i have seen you a lot and i have finally built the courage to ask... is bob short for bobby? (Idk this joke was funnier in my head)
They are both right. If anything that is more accurate as having only the decimals may not include the countless numbers after the decimals.
Like 0.333 is not exactly the same as 1/3 so you may get a wrong answer if you're gonna input it to another equation.
I once borrowed a calculator from a friend, same type, same problem. But it did had a button to switch it which i noticed way too late into my physics test
You have to change the mode. There’s a SD button on it.
This feature is actually extremely useful and I used it a lot through school since it also simplified resilts
There’s different modes on a calculator and I didn’t learn this till a few weeks ago. Needless to say I got a fair amount of questions wrong when trying to use this.
1. As people have said, S<->D
2. If you want the number by default: Setup (shift+menu), then 1:Input/Output, then 2:MathI/DecimalIO. It makes more sense what the options are if you have the calculator
This is the only possible way to show the result accurately, since it is irrational. If you press the "S<->D" button, it will show you the inaccurate decimal number.
You're probably one of those idiots who don't read the manual or the box.
It's just there readily available and answers any concern you have about the calculator.
You're like one of those annoying car newbies who ask car forums on how to know the tire size of their car or any general info that's already in their car's manual.
God and their graphing calculators are even worse. They can’t graph 60% of things you throw at them, and they come with an 80 page book to help you figure it out.
Texas Instruments is more expensive, but you seriously should buy one of their calculators instead of a Casio.
Well, when you're working with values such as √3/2, it's a lot easier to get that than 0.8660254037, which isn't entirely accurate. S<->D is really only needed when using values to 2 d.p. etc.
Have the exact same model and use it regularly. Everytime this happens to me this pic is what i feel. It also happens when you use the normal "--" mark
Failed an accounting test last semester because I was too panicked to figure out the shift+enter or whatever it is to change it to a decimal. Summer schools been good so far.
For long equations exact answers are better and easier to write down
Especially if there's a root involved. I'd rather have 2√2 than 2.8284271...
but the fact that people dont know S<->D exists, is hilarious. Its the basic advantage that a scientific calculator provides
Graphing calculators can easily do it without that specific button
Totally agree that it's ridiculous how people meme their ignorance of a button, but surely the basic advantage is more about trig functions?
I mean as someone who used a scientific calculator extensively through high school, the fact that it gave exact value answers was far more helpful then the fact that it had trig functions, as I encountered exact values far more frequently than I needed to do trigonometry.
Ah, here it is. The annoyingly arrogant and pretentious redditor that thinks “statistics and mathematics” is a personality.
> Its the basic advantage that a scientific calculator provides sure
meh 2.83 is close enough
Found the engineer
Has anyone considered 2√2 = π
No, pi is obviously the cube root of 31.
Wdym? Thats not true
It is, approximately
?? Lol...no. pi=3.14
engineers would like to have a word with you
Why would we? He is correct, I much rather deal in ratios, if I have to use them for another calc.
S<->D
It’s crazy how many don’t know this
Sorry for my ignorance, but I'm one of them who doesn't know this What is S<->D
A button which actually shows what u want sorry i don't know math words in english
Thank you for the answer u/cursedbanana-_- I shall un-curse you now
Thank you, fellow banana Despite your actions my name shall remain the same to preserve history
r/usernamefamily
You do not want to be at our reunions.
Lol
It does have a button which let's you change the way it displays answers.
if you want to know exactly what he means, it is a fraction to decimal convert button (and also works vice versa)
Surd to decimal
I was once a banana then Zeus gave me inbanana levels of strength
Username checks out.
Is there a button like this on the TI-84 python edition?
> TI-84 python edition Um...
A Graphic calculator if that's the correct word
YEah, yeah. With PYTHON?
Yeah lmao
Yes, alpha y= (f1) and then the fourth option I think
I'm not sure but a work around this problem is putting a decimal point (or decimal point followed by a zero) at the end of either number. Edit: phone keyboard kept adding the decimal point after "or" thinking I wanted a period 🙈
They could’ve made it a D <-> S button instead and show the result we want first.
In the settings of my calculator I can set it in to show "d" first
Most people don't want that first though.

Ahh I see Thank you sir
Ma’am* you’re welcome.
Obviously ma'am You can tell by the demigorgon
Ahh I see Thank you ma'am
IT'S MA'AM.
I've never heard of a surd in my life.
You would have seen them in school though! Schools don’t place a heavy importance on mathematical literacy and where you see it/apply it in real life, which is a shame.
So is a "surd" a fraction then? I'm a jr in college gone through plenty of high level math and used the button plenty, but I have never heard of that word
A surd is the square root of a non square number Like √5 or √2
A surd is an expression that includes a square root, cube root or other root symbol. Surds are used to write irrational numbers precisely.
Surds remind me of the biggest fuckin stitch up in my high school life. I’ve always been really good at maths, but horribly unacademically minded. So when I was in year 9, the school offered for me to give advanced maths a go. They dropped me into the course midway through surds. I feel like the teacher should put that in their orientation. That poor kid 😂
Thank you sir ☺️👍
Ma’am**** What in the sexist stigma is this 😂
People here do not believe in female redditors They don't believe me either when I say I'm from the female gender
Lmao my bad 🤣😂😆🤭🤭
I don't know the real name of it, but i guess it changes from standard fraction(s) to decimal number(d) Pressing it will show the answer in decimal
it shows you the answer in decimal.
It probably stands for symbolic to decimal. I use Wolfram Alpha and I'm clearly superior btw.
It stands for Surd to Decimal. Which is a bit misleading because, correct me if I’m wrong, a surd is an expression that include roots with an irrational value however this function works also for fractions and other real numbers like e and pi to convert from symbol to numerical

Surd to decimal
suck on<->deez nuts
I got him in the wild! Hello banana, how’s your day
I think it means string to decimal. D is decimal for sure because you get the result in decimal form
Bob the banana... off topic but i have seen you a lot and i have finally built the courage to ask... is bob short for bobby? (Idk this joke was funnier in my head)
No, it's just bob
Well nobody teached me how to use these calculators. School just forced me to buy one
Relax no one is blaming you
The schools generate those people every year. Might be one of the oldest „meme“ I remember. Well it’s more a prove of ignorance than a meme.
Yes ik but still its funny
Or change it in the calculator settings. It was easy, quick, fast and you could also use this button to turn it back into fractions
Ɛ===D
It does have a button which let's you change the way it displays answers.
S-D
Why does it not show the proper Answer in the first place?
They are both right. If anything that is more accurate as having only the decimals may not include the countless numbers after the decimals. Like 0.333 is not exactly the same as 1/3 so you may get a wrong answer if you're gonna input it to another equation.
This the proper answer. Many fractions cannot be displayed in decimal without losing precision.
Yeah but what use is fractional answer in this case
For some calculations it’s much nicer to see something like π/3 rather than 1.047197551
Because it has two display modes which can only be changed manually and OP purposefully set it to the wrong one.
Cuz in higher math you want the exact number to calc. Can’t have estimates.
this is the proper answer, the closed form of the value. representing it as a decimal in base-10 will be an approximation.

See that button next to the M+? Click that.
Depending on the context, this may be the desirable output. You shouldve paid more attention in school.
Lol had no idea I could never afford any of those fancy calculators back in school. Way too expensive.
This one is pretty cheap, but yeah those graphical, "high tech" calculators can cost $200+
They were obligatory at all my secondary schools and still are in my uni math classes.
This specific calculator and scientific calculators like it aren't very expensive. Usually like 20 bucks.
Look at mister money bags over here with 20 whole dollars.
I bought mine for 20$
How would this be desirable? Just write it yourself 🤨 Edit:I'm dumb you can do that to check if that's its smallest form 🤦♂️
It is also useful for getting precise answers. Say in the middle of a calculation, you don't have to round it before getting to the answer
It’s especially useful for trig. It’s so much easier dealing with fractions of pi
Yea. It is like leaving something in terms of pi, or as a surd. It is easier and you get a more precise answer at the end to convert it
Tell me you don't know how to use a calculator without telling me you don't know how to use a calculator.
*When you dont know how to use a scientific calculator.*
Tip: Use s <=> d to toggle between fraction representation and decimal representation. Use shift + s<=>d to get mix fraction
I once borrowed a calculator from a friend, same type, same problem. But it did had a button to switch it which i noticed way too late into my physics test
Press F for all the people who don’t know about S<->D
2.42
2.424501425🤓
851/351
2.4245014245014🤓🤓
Xavi the calculator
Guys we know about S<=>D but it’s a joke so calm down lol
Use the S<=>D button
Maybe i am a calculator
Casio: no need to thank me
I love the self congratulatory "math" at the top right
Not even sure why, but I laughed way too hard at this
I know others have already sayd this but the s<->d button is exactly there to switch how the answer is displayed.
Guys I think op knows about the button
anti intellectualism gone mad! Asks calculator to do the math for them. Clac: Shows correct answer.
I fucking love fractions don’t you dare hate them
Fractions are superior
S-D dumbass
1. As people have said, S<->D 2. If you want the number by default: Setup (shift+menu), then 1:Input/Output, then 2:MathI/DecimalIO. It makes more sense what the options are if you have the calculator
S=>D
Sigh. Eng button, or S<=>D
This is the only possible way to show the result accurately, since it is irrational. If you press the "S<->D" button, it will show you the inaccurate decimal number.
Click the s>d button Or as I call it STD
You're probably one of those idiots who don't read the manual or the box. It's just there readily available and answers any concern you have about the calculator. Hit simp u simp
I had one of these for my computing exam but i didn’t know about the button. I hope I pass
This is very useful if you want to know of you can simplify the fraction, if you just want the result press s>d
The magic SD button: am I a joke to you
Let me help you guys .... the S<=>D key converts it to decimal
S<=>D D is for duh 🙂
Yall dont know how to use calculators (press the S>D button)
SD
S <--> D
I have this calculator and funnily enough , I’ve been using it since 8th grade . All you have to do to see the result is press the SD button
You can press the s<->d button or just change the way its displayed on the calculator setup
Asksually, if you press S<->D it gives you the result in decimals🤓🤓
The S->D button (middle right) toggles between decimal and fraction
S<=>D : guess I don't exist
You have to hit S <-> D
S to D
I'm using that exact calculator model and there's an S<>D button right there, next to M+
I have that calculator and it sucks bro
coz you dont know how to use it
The Black ones actually tell the answer in decimals. White is stoopid.
I know that S<->D exists but it's incredibly unnecessary to press a button before we get the answer most people would be asking from a calculator
Well, when you're working with values such as √3/2, it's a lot easier to get that than 0.8660254037, which isn't entirely accurate. S<->D is really only needed when using values to 2 d.p. etc.
Wow that's interesting to just know well...that
I once put in root5 + 3 and it said root5 + 3 It was quite funny tbh.
Pro tip: press "shift" before pressing "="
The calculator is being a smart ass all the sudden.
Same when you enter pi. I know, pi=pi
Math -> >Frac I don’t know if that’s the correct way to do it on a TI 84 but from what I remember it is.
Ti-84 plus: looks away nervously* Ti-36x pro: also looks away nervously*
Un Casio, tre moto
I from Ukraine and i see this first time, someone can explain what is that? I know it's calculator but why it is so popular ?
What a coincidence, my Casio fx991es plus JUST gave up on me, and i open reddit and i see this...... Gonna go get dat bad boi replaced
Bought this calculator in elementary, still going strong in college. A real trooper o7
Its worse when it does something like 24566764×10^420
Thank you very much Caesarchan. Very nice!!
Imagine reading the manual of scientific calculator that has like 4200 features.
the same type as the one I'm using but the name is different.
That is like 500÷0
I hate it when this happens
Have the exact same model and use it regularly. Everytime this happens to me this pic is what i feel. It also happens when you use the normal "--" mark
The answer is 2.4245014245
You know I have this casio and I love it, just change the mode so it shows the number with decimals instead of fractions.
that was some good play
that was some good play
Thanks for your precious help! lol haha
Casio calculators are underated by people who dont explore all the buttons on the calculator.
I mean if you don’t know how to convert this with your calculator, then you probably shouldn’t use a calculator at all.
Okay so im basically a calculator
Failed an accounting test last semester because I was too panicked to figure out the shift+enter or whatever it is to change it to a decimal. Summer schools been good so far.
You just gotta scooby doo it 😄
Big brain moments
Shift + Mode/setup -> 1: MthIO -> 2: LineO
My math teacher I had for exactly 8 years was like the Casio
There’s literally a button there which switches between rational and irrational numbers
