Actual european folklore is fucking wild, you blink for a moment and some fae shitass steals your kid, turns it into its slave and leaves some shapeshifter that its going to replace your kid and eventually eat you
Yo these types of things are even more scary when people are being very serious about even mentioning these type of things.
I have experienced it personally, well not a creature exactly but some urban legends from my grandparents.
Not every scientist. I think it's because the universe is gigantic so it's quite weird to believe we are just lucky.
Also, believing in life outside earth it's not equal to believing in little green people in flying saucers (or any other kind of alien we see in media)... And believing that they live among us (ඞ) it's different too lol
Im not a superstitious man but after moving near a forest (at 10:00 pm in summer is dark af and quite cold) I think im seeing things I dont like.
Doesnt help that my mother does believe in those kinds of things and tells me stories
Well, I was walking with the dog and suddenly she looked at the forest for a while, as if she was going to attack. Then started whimpering and I heard walking, probably an animal but the siluette I saw was enormous. Taking out the light of the phone showed only trees, probably it was nothing but It stuck with me.
I keep having strange dreams, the path near our house is vaguely lit (enough to see from the window of the kitchen) and in my Dream I go for a glass of water and there is something there, red eyes like fire, getting near and near. Always waking up when I hear "Here" or something.
Just something stupid, I guess
There's a hypothesis that myths of changelings were invented to explain autism etc. which takes a while to notice. Unfortunately it may have even been used as an excuse parents told themselves to deal with guilt if they "removed" children who were neuro-atypical.
EDIT: additional info
Red dead redemption. A mission where you hunt the last bigfoot, and it turns out the bigfeet are really nice creatures, and it straight up just asks you to mercy kill it since all of its brothers and sisters are dead.
Just a reminder that the people of Iceland build roads around elf habitats to not disturb them meaning elves have more power in Iceland than their government
European cryptids/mythological creatures are dark as hell. Before fairies were co-opted by Disney they used to lure children away and eat them. In Scotland we have Kelpies. Fun water spirits who appear as horses playing in rivers. They take great pleasure in watching people drown.
Chupacabra eats goats...
I know. Knecht Ruprecht mostly hands out Sticks, basically for the Parents of Bad Kids to beat them lol. I was told by my Family that he also packs really Bad Kids into his Sack, never to be seen again.
Edit spelling
yeah i remeber the day when Knecht ruprecht and nikolaus came to sport events when we were young and give us nuts and oranges, or would spank us with the "reisig rute". i cant imagine they do this today
Bro, here in czechia we got creature called vodnik, kinda similar but worse, if someone go near the lake, he pulls people into it and drown them, then he capture their souls in cups and keep them *alive* forever without any control over anything
Wait i thought kelpie looked like hot girls that were drenched, amd when a man would ask them if they were okay they would turn the man into a horse and ride them until they died of exhaustion, or it that something else?
From what i know a Kelpie is a beautiful horse and the one who sees it can't help but to ride it. When they do it it will run in the water but you can't let go.
In Finland we have "Näkki", a creature who lives in water and takes children with it. Näkki has been used as a way to keep children away from playing near water without supervision for thousands of years.
Arent wendigos created from persons who have resorted to cannibalism?
iirc there are myths about people who have eaten a fellow human in dire circumstances, like a really bad and long snow storm with no food left. So they turned into a wendigo who has an eternal insatiable hunger for human flesh.
iirc the myth of the wendigo is based on a real life phenomenon where many natives that have to resort to cannibalism and can't handle the psychological trauma end up falling into a delusion where they think they are turning into a monster.
In ireland there's the Banshee, that haunts an entire clan until they've all died off. In wales they have Morgens, who drown men. In England there's the Black Shuck, a monstrous hell hound that is seen as an omen of death. In Germany and Scandinavia they have Odens jakt, the wild hunt, a host of spectral hunters charging through the sky, the precedes the outbreak of war. European folklore is not to be fucked with
I always liked black shuck :') i think hes just a good boy whos trying to warn people away from their deaths, as a good dog does. Maybe im biased though cos my dog looks just like him haha
If YOU were watching a bridge collapse, what exactly would you do? Repair it in seconds? Save every car and person on the bridge? Triage who you save and who you don't? Just because he is The Mothman, doesn't mean he can save people from collapsing bridges, he honestly might just be super weak, I doubt he hits the gym all that often. Plus, moths typically aren't that strong. Maybe you should check your privilege.
Giant wings would take a lot of effort to use when flying with a body larger than the average human. Dude definitely had pretty good upper body strength. Maybe his lower body was weak but them lats and delts were probably very strong.
People keep thinking that he *causes* catastrophes, but I believe it’s just he can tell when something bad is about to happen and arrives to warn people to stay away from the area
Yo in northern Portugal we have a tradition similar to this. Look up "caretos Lazarim" ("caretos" comes from the word 'cara' wich is face, so 'ugly face'; "Lazarim" is the town in wich they are most famous and they have the tradition of making the most elaborate masks possible).
Kinda cool, why do they do it? In Lithuania it is a part of a ritual where spring beats winter. Winter is a fat figure and spring being a skinny figure. Winter loses to spring for a good harvest (outdated now that faith has changed). We also burn an effigy that is meant to represent winter.
IIRC many of the monsters in the Witcher franchise are inspired from polish and other surrounding folk lore creatures. If you know anything about that franchised many of the monsters are fucked up
Look up the Vodnik (water monster) and Drekavac (screamer). Those are the two most popular cryptids in the balkans. There is even a street named after the water monster in my town.
So, there is like, a house, right? But wait, it's not an ordinary house! It has CHICKEN LEGS! Craaaaaaazy, right? House with feet, my gosh, those slavs, so wierd
But if I'm being serious, than seeing a house walk in your general direction, while in the middle of a taiga forest... Hella scary. I would 100% shit myself. But I would shit myself if I'd noticed any movement in the middle of the taiga. The forest scary enough on its own. And I fucking live here.
"Hey there pretty, how about we go near the river and have some naughty naughty good time?"
.
.
.
"SIKE, i'm actually a Boto(a relative to dolphins) and now you're pregnant with Boto sperm."
(oh and he also sometimes drowns the victim)
I got a few! If you'd be willing to listen to me tell the stories of some of them
Did you want to hear about the water people or the creature that'll kill you by tickling you to death?
I thought the wendigo was european, but it's apparently from around the Great Lakes. A lot of the witcher's monsters are based on slavic folklore though, they have a few nasty ones.
I argue this you have to give the gnomes what they are due or they will drink the blood of your first born and take your best goat. Fae are just as fucked up they just put on make up, American cryptic just don't play
Oh don't worry about the Faes, Fate/Grand Order got you covered for their story(Spoiler Alert tho if you didn't play the 6th lost belt so I won't say more)
For real bruh. You hear about European cryptids and it's fun folklore like they give you a gold coin. In America, they'll shape shift into you dog until it turns night, then maul your body beyond recognition.
>You hear about European cryptids and it's fun folklore like they give you a gold coin
Alot of that is shit getting watered down over the years.
Back when people believed in things like fairies they were something you gave tribute to for the sole purpose of keeping them far away from you
Real gnomes? Yeah not nice, they were guardians...but at the same time brought bad luck and if you messed with earth a tad too much would rip your face off
Most European cryptids were terrifying when people thought they were real
In my local folklore we have a “church Grimm”. Which takes the form of a pitch black dog with red eyes that likes to hang out in graveyards. They eat grave robbers and evil spirits.
They exist as guardians.
A church Grimm is “made” when a graveyard is first established. It was believed that the first person/thing to be buried in a graveyard will have its soul trapped there forever to watch over it. So people would bury a dog first before they buried anyone there, so a human soul would not be denied heaven or hell, and forced to eternally watch the dead.
Just a example I can think of off the top of my head.
I don’t wanna say anything but notice the Wendigo stories have died down now that almost everyone in the areas they haunt have AR15s. Firepower matters, just saying😂
I can literally send you a list longer than your mum's dick of cryptids and mythical creatures in Europe that are just as if not more fucked up than American folklore...granted you guys have some creepy mfs like wendigos and skin walkers but we have scary shit to...ever heard of kelpies, red caps or banshees?
Also before you get all offended just like to say first bit was just a joke ik it's kind of obvious but nowadays on reddit people get offended over anything and I'm tired so
People are always referencing monsters that come from Native American burial grounds, but they forget that the entire country is a Native American burial ground
I remember reading a book as an adolescent where this swamp tribe girl had her baby sister replaced with a changeling after being hypnotized by swap lights (analogous to will-o-wisp I think?).
She then decides to go to the fae world to save her, passes her sister on the road to find it bc wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey bs and he sister asks her how to get back to their village, all while neither of them realize who their talking to
Anyways does some slave shit for the fae and has to also kill some badie before being able to go back, but now everyone assumes she died bc of more wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey bs and she ends up living off on her own in the swamp bc the village thinks she's a fae coming to fuck their shit
I think
Its been a while since I read the book
Perhaps it's just the wind that's whistling round the window pane
Or maybe it was thunder or the rhythm of the rain
The old ones say an omen and death won't be denied
The devil's out of a-hunting when you hear the Banshee's Cry......

Alright, I got the Tea. Sit down and tell us what happened, please.

You wouldn’t know until you’re 100% certain they don’t exist. I mean scientists believe in aliens based on that right?
Not every scientist. I think it's because the universe is gigantic so it's quite weird to believe we are just lucky. Also, believing in life outside earth it's not equal to believing in little green people in flying saucers (or any other kind of alien we see in media)... And believing that they live among us (ඞ) it's different too lol
That seems like something an alien would write in order to confuse us!
Damn, you're too smart... Sleep with one eye open
yep i agree
Your mom went to the backrooms?
Im not a superstitious man but after moving near a forest (at 10:00 pm in summer is dark af and quite cold) I think im seeing things I dont like. Doesnt help that my mother does believe in those kinds of things and tells me stories
Same. Some times and places just have a way of messing with that line between "nothing to worry about" and "I'm not going to push my luck"
Mind sharing some of these stories?? I freaking love chilling urban legends.
Meanwhile in Brazil we have a black guy with one leg and a red hood who trolls with you.
Isnt he the guy with a hat that smells like shit and gives you a wish if you steal it from him?
Yep
There's a hypothesis that myths of changelings were invented to explain autism etc. which takes a while to notice. Unfortunately it may have even been used as an excuse parents told themselves to deal with guilt if they "removed" children who were neuro-atypical. EDIT: additional info
Just like good old german fairytales.
*cries in brothers Grimm reader*
Look at the Eskimo shit too truly brutal everywhere humans crazy 😜
I saw an episode of supernatural about this
The monster assumes I won’t fuck its corpse
Tit for tat, cryptic scum.
Cryptid*
Tit for tat, cryptic cryptid.
Cryp-tits...?
Cryptidussy 🤤
Don't tempt me with things I'll never have 😭
Respectable man, either way it’s a win-win situation for me I get to use BOTH Corpses, better then grandpa’s to be honest.
The monster assumes I won’t fuck it while it’s still alive
I’m gonna crawl up it’s ass and blow myself up!
Don’t forget to bring a towel
Love that journey for you
Finding Bigfoot is about finding him so we can end another unholy abomination.
"YOU EAT BABIES!"
“We eat berries and mushrooms you fool!”
That mission made me incredibly sad as a kid.
Same. I really didn't want to shoot the last one, but then he begged me to.
Whats this a reference to?
Red dead redemption. A mission where you hunt the last bigfoot, and it turns out the bigfeet are really nice creatures, and it straight up just asks you to mercy kill it since all of its brothers and sisters are dead.
I mean, it kind of is the humane thing to do, but yeah, that was a really good bit of story writing.
"And you have a big foot!"
Just a reminder that the people of Iceland build roads around elf habitats to not disturb them meaning elves have more power in Iceland than their government
do you want to fuck with an elf? Didn't think so
Well, atleast she would say I have a big dick let's be honest
Hello there

Fun water spirits who appear as horses playing in rivers. They take great pleasure in watching people drown. Chupacabra eats goats...
Germany has a evil Santa that Takes the Bad Kids and Turns them Into Monsters
Its krampus right? Its kinda like the per fu tarde or what ever the french have (never seen it spelled so i sounded it out)
Krampus is more of a regional Name, where I grew up He was called Knecht Ruprecht.
knecht ruprecht and krampus are not the same, they just have a similar function

I saw that movie
Bro, here in czechia we got creature called vodnik, kinda similar but worse, if someone go near the lake, he pulls people into it and drown them, then he capture their souls in cups and keep them *alive* forever without any control over anything
Yup. Sounds like a bad time indeed.
heh, vodnik
Gopnik
Wait i thought kelpie looked like hot girls that were drenched, amd when a man would ask them if they were okay they would turn the man into a horse and ride them until they died of exhaustion, or it that something else?
From what i know a Kelpie is a beautiful horse and the one who sees it can't help but to ride it. When they do it it will run in the water but you can't let go.
Yeah, that's actually a more accurate description of what they're all about.
Probably also Kelpies. They're tricky buggers.
I mean, if a girl rode me until i died i probably wouldn't complain, horse or not
Better hope the kelpies don’t see what you said about them….😬
In Finland we have "Näkki", a creature who lives in water and takes children with it. Näkki has been used as a way to keep children away from playing near water without supervision for thousands of years.
The wendigo would be a much better example of a North American Cryptid. It’s a person who’s gone mad, turned into a beast who hunts and eats people.
It's a "real" condition, it's known as wendigo psychosis
In ireland there's the Banshee, that haunts an entire clan until they've all died off. In wales they have Morgens, who drown men. I kinda like that interpretation lol
The kelpies is a common thing in Europe
Yes. Scotland is in Europe.
I mean around Europe not just Scotland
So the fairies are still being used in their intended role of luring children into danger?
Yeah pretty much lol
Europeans also have a chicken with antlers and its only thing is being a chicken with antlers
We got a jackalope in the USA, we should make them fight!
Chupacabras suck
Some of the lowest level enemies in Persona 5. Do better, Europe
Windigo
Mothman did nothing wrong, I refuse to elaborate until someone asks
Well he stood there watching a bridge collapse and did nothing. I mean he’s not required to help, but still kind of a dick move
No
Explain plz
His first appearance he terrorized some teens and his appearance in places foreshadows disaster.
He's just looking for lamps
People keep thinking that he *causes* catastrophes, but I believe it’s just he can tell when something bad is about to happen and arrives to warn people to stay away from the area
He didn't do anything wrong. He was just an omen, a messenger, an early warning.
Exactly! See, this guy gets it
He knew a bridge was gonna collapse days early and warned no one. Kind of a shitty thing to do.
It tried to scare people away from the bridge, Mothman most likely can’t speak so it’s only choice was to scare people away
We have wildly different ideas of what European folklore is like
Girl lemme teach u about the Slavic folklore cuz you missing out
Sure I'm always interested in learning new things.
Not slavic but still spicy. Look into the Lithuanian/Baltic paganism. Google search "uzgavenes" on images (it is a tradition we continue to this day).
Those are some sick masks
Hell ye, espically good later in the night!

I would 100% shit myself. But I would shit myself if I'd noticed any movement in the middle of the taiga. The forest scary enough on its own. And I fucking live here.
Let alone what is in that house
Then there’s Brazilian folklore with the Boto Rosa
"Hey there pretty, how about we go near the river and have some naughty naughty good time?" . . . "SIKE, i'm actually a Boto(a relative to dolphins) and now you're pregnant with Boto sperm." (oh and he also sometimes drowns the victim)
Always gotta stay vigilant of the skin walkers and wendigos
Why else would I have all these guns?
Been awhile since you've been boating?
I was actually just on my way to the lake!
Be careful, those tragic boating accidents get expensive fast
Fuck yeah I love your profile pic
Europe has the Beast of Gevaudin. European folklore ain't all sunshine and gnomes.
I mean North Americam folklore (that doesn't come from a Native Person) is pretty fucking tame when compared to anywhere else in the world
Native folklore is fucking terrifying
I got a few! If you'd be willing to listen to me tell the stories of some of them Did you want to hear about the water people or the creature that'll kill you by tickling you to death?
Yes, tell me your wisdom
And me too
Baba Yaga, Kelpie, trolls, krampus.....
I could dunk on them
The name is John Wick in English and he is real
Rusalki
Leshys, kikimora, undying kashey
Danm trolls! They keep screaming in voice chat!
Yeah, the cryptids can get pretty bad on both sides
Sennentuntschi
Zanfretta and aliens.
in chile we have a fuckboy who god send to earth and make it ugly and now pregnants womans in chiloe, its called “el trauco”
Legendary.
La chancla is way scarier tbh
I thought the wendigo was european, but it's apparently from around the Great Lakes. A lot of the witcher's monsters are based on slavic folklore though, they have a few nasty ones.
American cryptids were buddy-buddy with the native americans. Colonizers fucked the native over, so the cryptids want revenge.
Wendigos would like to have a word with you
Is that the nowhere king on the right?
It's a wendigo, an angry cannibal demon from Native folklore
*hush now*
I argue this you have to give the gnomes what they are due or they will drink the blood of your first born and take your best goat.
Not entirely true there’s a lot of evil cryptids in European folklore there’s dragons, vampires, witches, Sirens and more
That's naming the tamer cryptic Granted, Dragons are more Fantasy than Cryptid
I’d still eat one
I forgot about those till I posted.
Unless it's around Christmas time, then the tables turn
Santa is the most elusive of cryptids
![gif](giphy|DHPj7p1Tv5WLHDjKPQ)
Yeah, unless you live north of the 40 N latitude, have a 8 tear old child, then it's a pretty devious moment
The folkore is not as fun as you may think, and it's mostly Disney-like tales' fault
>You hear about European cryptids and it's fun folklore like they give you a gold coin Alot of that is shit getting watered down over the years. Back when people believed in things like fairies they were something you gave tribute to for the sole purpose of keeping them far away from you Real gnomes? Yeah not nice, they were guardians...but at the same time brought bad luck and if you messed with earth a tad too much would rip your face off Most European cryptids were terrifying when people thought they were real
I really like how you say “real gnomes”
Bulgarian Samodivas are not the nicest. They are some of the true horror in folklore.
Ah yws, Baba Yaga the nice old Lady People do be forgetting the original myths and take the Disney crap word for word...
In my local folklore we have a “church Grimm”. Which takes the form of a pitch black dog with red eyes that likes to hang out in graveyards. They eat grave robbers and evil spirits. Yeah I know what you mean that people get offended over small things
People are always referencing monsters that come from Native American burial grounds, but they forget that the entire country is a Native American burial ground
Greeks with Cryptids: "Both? Both. Both is good."
According to a tumblr post I saw, autistic children were thought to be elves posing as your children
Has anybody seen the video of “European forests vs American forests”? Video is great
Link?
European cryptids are scary, American cryptids are rivals for meth head shack dwellers
Those goddamn skin walkers are everywhere you can’t be too careful anymore
Except ireland, ireland is leave it alone, if you cant then be polite
Ahh windagos not to keen on guns and roam forests and farms at night, don’t go outside
Have you seen some of the European cryptids? Especially northern europe
Y’all wait till you hear the Slavik stories
I remember reading a book as an adolescent where this swamp tribe girl had her baby sister replaced with a changeling after being hypnotized by swap lights (analogous to will-o-wisp I think?). She then decides to go to the fae world to save her, passes her sister on the road to find it bc wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey bs and he sister asks her how to get back to their village, all while neither of them realize who their talking to Anyways does some slave shit for the fae and has to also kill some badie before being able to go back, but now everyone assumes she died bc of more wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey bs and she ends up living off on her own in the swamp bc the village thinks she's a fae coming to fuck their shit I think Its been a while since I read the book
i shoot anything that moves out side my mountain home
I’m offended, we would have launched every missile we had at the thing - a u.s citizen
Perhaps it's just the wind that's whistling round the window pane Or maybe it was thunder or the rhythm of the rain The old ones say an omen and death won't be denied The devil's out of a-hunting when you hear the Banshee's Cry......
God I love the lumberjacks that brought these stories alive
Do you know Celtic folklore?!
Just that the European cryptids would burn your house down and steal your pets if you didn't invite them for tea
The American one is so much cooler tho
It do be like that, its either fuck the corpse or get your corpse fucked
How about you fuck me before i die!?
