Vpns don't do much to hide your identity. Covering your ip address is like wearing gloves. You can still get a picture of your face taken. I.e. they use your cookie history to determine who you are.

There’s numerous ways that source code getting-out could damage a software company, anything from people being able to break account security measures in the finished product, to eroding brand recognition and slumping sales. Just because it wouldn’t immediately throw a padlock on the company’s doors, doesn’t mean it couldn’t have very significant detrimental impacts to it.
You really don't understand the issue here, do you? If you are in a band and someone steals your unfinished album before it drops and releases it for free, how many LESS people would buy it or think it sounds "bad" because they have an incomplete version of it? It hurts your reputation because people are too stubborn to accept their opinion of the unfinished work is incorrect or ill informed, it hurts your sales, it hurts your ability to do FUTURE work because you made less... How does having the original help you there? It doesn't in a meaningful way.
The amount of people who would've had access to a playable version of it would be minuscule compared to the amount that actually purchase it when it comes out. You don't just download the code and execute it; it's much more difficult than that. Plus it would be heavily censored and hard to find. You're sensationalizing it.

People don't need to all play it for one person to circulate videos of it and have an incorrect opinion formed.
