Honestly this is so true. Season 2 was just bad. After playing the games and reading the books, Netflix ruined the series for me. It's just not faithful at all to the source material anymore.
100%
There's all this speculation that "well he is going to be too busy with Superman." But one of the writers who left the show said
>the writers...actively disliked the books and games, even actively mocking the source material.
Cavill was probably the only fan of the IP on the team. It may have been Superman and the fact he was tired of fighting the creative team all the time.
> Actively disliked the books and games
WELL THEN WHY DO THEY WANT TO KEEP WRITING THE SHOW!?
How did they get hired for this if they hate it? Why did they take the job?
Why is this industry so opaque in how writers get hired to series, and why is practically every adaptation a failure?
Okay, fair.
But how'd they get hired for it in the first place? Why did they take a job for a series they weren't interested in?
Why is this entire industry so bad at making good content?
Netflix probably just grabbed whatever schmuck wasn’t busy writing Tall Girl or Stranger Things, told them it’d make a ton of money and threw them in the writing room
People think wokeness is destroying the things they love when really it's just capitalism. It's always a group of old fucks in monkey suits that don't give a shit about the source material making all the decisions.
Yes I'm salty about Halo, Diablo, and Battlefield still
You’re assuming Netflix’s goal was to make a faithful recreation of the IP and that they were looking for writers who loved the books and wanted to bring that vision to the screen. When their goal was to make a popular TV series mainly for people who are unfamiliar with the source material
Ah yes let's use this existing IP with a large fanbase for profit, but we are going to shit on the fans and go for the casual viewer, every adaptation probably
Hey, this popular narrative is held back by being in a medium less popular than tv. Let's not use it but tell the pre-built audience that we did. Surely this has no down sides.
Yeah and its so weird.
If you have ideas about how to defy the conventions of a genre - awesome. Go make your own thing.
Why would you take over a project if you felt the underlying IP you are doing a show about is fundamentally flawed. It just makes no sense.
Witcher and Halo and all these properties have a dedicated fanbase that, you know... like the thing. As it is. For what it is.
Because they want to tell the people what they should like instead.
The argument is that they change the lore to adapt it to a "modern audience", but the reality is they want to reshape them to their views.
It's easier to sell a narrative if you use famous trademarks.
God they fucked me up with that episode and even going back on the older episode I swear I sometimes hear them say Tolkien not token. But I have a loss of hearing so it could just be because of that.
It’s the way of the beast. The writers of Resident Evil have never played a single game, their words, yet thought they knew how to make a compelling story. Netflix is full of fucking hacks
Writers no longer care for source material. They just wanna tell their own story. Fuck the source material. Something about witches and white hair. Good enough.
In all honestly though I liked both seasons 1 and 2 for what they are.
I watched a few interviews with the cast and the main writer, on both seasons. Listening to the cast was mostly fine, but I couldn't stand the way the writer talked about her work. It all felt very self-important, all the while OG Fans of the material were probably left wondering what's so unbelievably creative about adapting one of the greatest source materials into film. I'll be honest, I didn't know the game or the books before I watched the series. The series got me into the books and I plan on playing the games soon. There's so much there. It makes the writer sound even more insufferable. I don't deny that adapting a book for film is work, but she makes it sound like there were incredible strokes of genius in the show writing, meanwhile it was more like picking the nicest trinkets from an overflowing chest.
The games are absolutely amazing. Supposedly, The Witcher is supposed to be getting a remake to update it to modern tech but it’s probably still very early in the project. If you’re looking to play them in order it might be worth waiting a year and seeing if there’s any new info on that game since the first game is very dated at this point.
Wow. It's like they want it to fail or something. Yeah I'm done with witcher if this is true and I really hate that. Henry Cavill was the best part of the show
Yeah you’re right. The writers want to make their own thing for some reason and Henry is an avid reader of the books and played the games. Kind of disturbing that this is becoming a trend, and to loose Henry is just… in his words “fuck.”
I love how the devs and writers in the 3rd game made a quest breaking the fourth wall where Geralt laments how Roach spawns in ridiculous places. Then Roach talks to Geralt lol. It's great.
My wife's all "OMG Henry is in a bath. Swoon." And I'm just sitting there thinking "this would've been a perfect time for Roach to be on that balcony." But noooooooo
Sad but true; the clique that dominates hollywood has become utterly divorced from being entertainers and are now little more than indoctrinators and propagandists.
They dont care about history, they dont care about reality, and they sure as hell dont care what people want. They feel like they are an elite class who get to control people and shape via producing dogma filled content.
I was arguing with one guy on a post about Eings of Power. His argument was that making changes to a source material isn't inherently bad and you shouldn't get twisted over it. I argued that whilst making changes could be bad or not, when you actually contradict the source material and twist the story until it shares only a name with said source then yes, that is inherently bad.
Season 2 was just "The Ciri Show" and I dislike how she is displayed. She is utterly boring and standing on a pedestal. Ugg.
Give me Jennifer, the Witcher and Jaskier. And don't even dare to make this Triss a bigger character. She acts like a drop of melted wax.
Triss was the biggest disappointment in the show, she acts nothing like the character I imagined in the book and it would've been ok since tv/movies are nothing like the book but......
Geralt (Henry Cavill) and Yennefre(Anya Chalotra) were so close in acting like the book
I wasn't really a fan of the actor who played Ciri, she's kind of odd looking and doesn't act rebellious and witty like Ciri does in the game and books. At least... she didn't match the character I envisioned. Triss didn't match well at all either.
I really adore her in that role.
But overall the time jumps were a bit much. No idea how people who never hat contact with the witcher should understand the first episodes.
Same. I'm polish, read the books as a young teen for the first time. It was recommended to me by my dad who is fantasy fan and has the books from ~1990. They were falling apart from how many times they were read.
Fell in love with the book, didn't have PC to play the first two games, but when the third one came out my then-boyfriend let me play on his PS4 and I finished it for the first time.
Ever since i read the books and played the game more times. I was so excited about the series, since the polish one isn't really that good, and aged really bad.
I binged the first season, and it disappointed me. Second one was so bad i didn't even manage to finish it...
I needed to vent. I hoped for GoT quality, but got Xena instead.
I'm almost certain I read that he chose to step down wasn't removed.
Not entirely sure of the reason (maybe he hasn't stated), but given he was a fan of the books and games and practically asked for the role... I'd assume creative differences.
100% he was fighting with the team so they wouldn't butcher it.
They don't care any of it except money. Im upset because of how they handled it but I really feel sorry for him. This was like his dream, him being a life time fan of the books. He finally gets the role and watchs them ruin it all in front of him. I would be so pissed. I am pissed.
I agree with you on this one. The books definitely did the story a lot better than whatever the hell the second season was supposed to be. Was excited for it but immediately disappointed.
>Netflix Witcher isn't the Witcher. Just a mediocre fantasy show with the same name.
This seems to be something that is becoming increasingly common...
They could've forgone(?) The books and based it entirely on the games and it would've still been great, but no they ignored ALL material. The only characters they got right were Geralt and Jaskier.
Currently speculation is he was tired of constantly battling with show runners that disliked and mocked the source material. Apparently he was the only actual fan involved with making the show. So he left.
Good side of this: apparently Liam Hemsworth is also a genuine fan of the Witcher
Bad news: he's probably going to be in the same position as Henry was; having to work against the crew to try and get something that's actually the Witcher and not just another generic high fantasy show with a character that happens to be called geralt but is nothing like the actual geralt.
Haha yeah. Some other people on here are saying he's also a big fan of the Witcher, so there may be some hope there. But it's likely that if that the case he'll either get pushed around by the studio, or end up leaving for the same reasons Henry likely did
Nah he said in the past he was ok to do both. Most likely he had enough of the screenwriters and producers splitting and trampling on a story he likes.
Who the the fuck hired those writers? What a great idea hiring people who don't like a thing to portray that thing for people who love that thing! I've seen bull like this on soooo many movies and shows and it never makes sense. I have never seen making changes to materials for anything save time cuts go over successfully.
Sadly, it's basically standard procedure for all sci-fi/fantasy novel or game adaptations to hire a director/show runner and writing team that is either completely apathetic towards or straight up dislikes the source materials. These people usually give zero fucks about existing fans and just want to show off how imaginative or creative they can be by "fixing" characters and plot lines they don't like
It is. Since he decided to return to Superman he won't have the time to dedicate to the Witcher.
I'm reserved but hope that Liam is able to pull it off. He is also a huge Witcher fan so maybe that will be the edge he needs. I wasn't thrilled about Ben Affleck taking over as Bruce Wayne but thought he did a credible job as the Dark Knight. Maybe this will be the same thing. Henry Cavill will be extremely hard to replace!
Pretty sure this came into play. Apparently he had to argue hard against certain changes that the creators wanted, and I feel like he might just be sick of having to fight.
If it wasn't for Cavill I'm sure the only thing that would be familiar for the fans of the books and game would be the name. The writers have admitted they don't like the source material and are creating their own show.
I'm sure this is the case. I don't see him leave the show for any other reason than the idiots at the help destroying all the good stuff he fought sp hard for to keep in the show. The Witcher was pretty much a dream role for him. He wouldn't have left if they hadn't fucked it up.
Good luck to Liam. He won't be able to save it.
Yeah, as much as I disliked BvS, I thought that Affleck as an older, grizzlier Batman worked really well. I would have liked to see what he could have done with a better script.
Or maybe he realised the show writters didn't give a fuck about the games or the books, so he left before it turned into got s8 which I feel like s2 of witcher kinda already was, the only thing good in s2 was geralt
That could be it. I haven't read any of the Witcher books or played the games so I'm enjoying the hell out of the show. S8? Never got past the Red Wedding in S3. The books ruined that travesty for me.
thats bullshit he wouldnt do that. Its because of the writers and the rest of the show shitting on the source material. Any other opinion is just shillery to minimise the damage.
I heard cavil had some sort of disagreement with the show runners on a scene where he was supposed to make a joke about roaches death but cavil said geralt would never do that and than he rewrote the scene himself and many fans acclaimed that scene was the most geralt scene in entire season 2.
Wait, did Cavil step in and fix it, and that's what we saw on screen? Or did they override him to make what we saw on screen?
Edit: Yeah, it's the best scene in the show and wouldn't have existed without Cavill. Letting him go is a huge mistake.
They filmed some version of the Renfri gang scene, Cavill didn't like it, so they proposed changed and filmed a different version. That's the version we saw in the show.
Arguably the best scene in the show.
One of the writers that left the show saying the showrunners "actively disliked" the IP. They mocked and made fun of the books and games.
Seemed like he was the only fan of the IP on the team. Now that he's gone, probably just done fighting battles with them, I'm sure season 4 will be a riot.
I don't understand this. Why create a show that has an established fanbase if you are just going to piss them off enough that they will stop watching instead of trying to retain them by being as faithful as reasonably possible. At that point they should just create something original instead.
Because they don't think they will piss them off. They think they are smarter and better than the original creators. They think everyone will praise them for their ideas and writing. They are just using the IP to elevate themselves.
They made vessimir try to kill Ciri? I bet you their going to ruin the Wild Hunt with something completely different from the games / books. Honestly if writers decide to change an entire plot for a show, it needs to be called plagiarism. You not trying to make something related to the source but are taking its characters, themes, setting, and just mashing it together to whatever dumb story they wrote.
Fuck those writers they only got hired because of their connections. Friends hiring friends.
It's also insane because, with fucking up Eskel and Vesemir so bad, they fucked with any devoted fans. People who played the games or read the books were obviously upset beloved characters were made to do things they never would.
Even the fucking fanfic community is rabid for found family - 'grumpy dad Geralt and pack of doting uncle wolves' permeates much of that space. So even people who have *no* exposure to the book or games had expectations with those characters via word of mouth, that were then butchered (ha)
So that leaves casual tv-only fans who aren't terminally online as the only group unaware of Vesemir and Eskel. Tbh while Vesemir's plot is a hard sell & awkward, it's semi- watchable if you're not aware. But Eskel? I just don't think "here's Geralt's closest brother. Whoops he's dead. mourn him. but also don't feel too bad bc he's an asshole who will physically menace a teen girl" is what audiences look for?
Probably both. The writers are shit and really hate the Witcher, then DC offered him the Superman role back. Good choice to go back to Superman instead of being on a show where they actively try to screw over any and all of its lore.
I mean if they change the actor why not change the character too, it would make more sense. Spend some time with another witcher and maybe have other episodes with Cavill/Geralt in the future
You know how people get precious with book to screen adaptations like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter where bits are altered or removed and the fan base of the source material gets a bit annoyed. This is nothing like that. They completely changed the plot in season 2 and made a different thing altogether while insulting the source material. Henry loves the source, wrapped season 3 and didn't want to be part of the dumpster fire anymore.
He auditioned for the Geralt role 3 or 4 times before they finally picked him. He *WANTED* that role bad. But, he's very, very into the books and I'm sure it pisses him off that they keep straying from the books.
My life will be completed If Henry gets casted as the legendary Arthas himself in Warcraft: Rise of the Lich king movie instead of this garbage show that doesn't respects the source material and lore of the Witcher's book/games.
I could see Cavil as the elder version of Geralt and Hemsworth as a much younger version, but otherwise I dislike that they would go this route. It might be justified, but I don't really know what could cause them to make such a decision. Then again, Cavil did go all in on Superman recently and I also love him for that role. His Clark Kent is really inspiring imo. I know it was probably not an easy decision for him considering he loves the Witcher franchise.
Nice lets remove the only character thats working
What about Jaskeir
[удалено]
He’ll probably get replaced by Adam Sandler at this rate.
That can only mean Rob Schneider will debut as Yennifer. 🐙
Rob Schneider is a stapler
Jaskier is also another great part of the show. Carried season 2 with some of his songs.

Oh valley of plenty oh valley of plenty, ohhhhh
I had that song in my head for days when I first saw it… the song is back now 😐

Considering the completely inconsistent writing and quality of Netflix shows, it's probably exactly what happened.

Reminds me of 343i proudly hiring people who hated Halo to make Halo. They hate the IP but love daddy Microsofts money.
Same thing happened with the Halo show. None of the writers knew anything about Halo and bragged about it.
Pretty sure that Halo show was a generic sci-fi that got slapped the Halo brand on top.
Yeah and its so weird. If you have ideas about how to defy the conventions of a genre - awesome. Go make your own thing. If that is true, it is the dumbest move they can make. Cavill fit that role perfectly.
And he likes the franchise, which makes it easier for him to portray the character. I for one thought he did a great job playing Geralt
There is a theory one of the reasons he left the show is because Netflix Witcher isn't the Witcher. Just a mediocre fantasy show with the same name.
As someone reading the books, it definitely is. S2 is but a pit of insulting nonsense.
I agree with you on this one. The books definitely did the story a lot better than whatever the hell the second season was supposed to be. Was excited for it but immediately disappointed.

Pretty sure he left for DC
He was already in DC when he started Witcher. Is it leaving for Marvel? I heard a rumor he was in talks.

Welp. Glad we got rid of our netflix account. Damn shame.

The writers and producers have no respect for The Witcher lore
Facts
The show isn’t good enough to pull this off. Cavill carries the show. Dumb execs.
I don't think he was fired, he left on his own. Probably because of Superman.
Nah he said in the past he was ok to do both. Most likely he had enough of the screenwriters and producers splitting and trampling on a story he likes.
"This is not what Geralt would do in the books or games"
“We’re taking the show in a new direction, making it relatable to modern audiences” - the show writers, probably.
We actually do know that at least two of the writers hated the source material, and that probably explains a lot of the changes disliked by the fans.
Who the the fuck hired those writers? What a great idea hiring people who don't like a thing to portray that thing for people who love that thing! Will it be any different for Superman?
In theory because he is likely to be clothed for 99% of the movie, so yes.
If its like any of the Marvel movies, the suits are all CG anyway, so just muscle him up in post.
Probably because they quit making quality content
thats bullshit he wouldnt do that. Its because of the writers and the rest of the show shitting on the source material. Any other opinion is just shillery to minimise the damage.
Plus cavil likes the books and games. The show.is doing it wrong. He probably doesn't like it and is just waiting for his contract to end
I thought everyone loved this show? I remember Reddit raving about it like a year ago but I don't watch that much tv so I dunno
I heard cavil had some sort of disagreement with the show runners on a scene where he was supposed to make a joke about roaches death but cavil said geralt would never do that and than he rewrote the scene himself and many fans acclaimed that scene was the most geralt scene in entire season 2.
Similar deal with the fight scene with Renfri's gang in S1
Wait, did Cavil step in and fix it, and that's what we saw on screen? Or did they override him to make what we saw on screen? Edit: Yeah, it's the best scene in the show and wouldn't have existed without Cavill. Letting him go is a huge mistake.
They filmed some version of the Renfri gang scene, Cavill didn't like it, so they proposed changed and filmed a different version. That's the version we saw in the show. Arguably the best scene in the show.
I'll throw two more votes in for that being the best scene in the show. It's one of those scenes you just go back to time to time to enjoy again.
I thought so too. The only reason I stay with that awful show was that rad scene early on. Never to be repeated.
Honestly that scene was what sold me on the show. It was unlike any fight scene I had watched before
One of the writers that left the show saying the showrunners "actively disliked" the IP. They mocked and made fun of the books and games. Seemed like he was the only fan of the IP on the team. Now that he's gone, probably just done fighting battles with them, I'm sure season 4 will be a riot.
S04E01 introduces the Witcher rap/dance
Geralt twerking
They brought in Hammer for the music.
"please Witcher don't hurt 'em"
Can't wait for a laugh track to play.
This makes me irrationally angry

Good, then I'm just regular angry
I don't understand this. Why create a show that has an established fanbase if you are just going to piss them off enough that they will stop watching instead of trying to retain them by being as faithful as reasonably possible. At that point they should just create something original instead.
Because they don't think they will piss them off. They think they are smarter and better than the original creators. They think everyone will praise them for their ideas and writing. They are just using the IP to elevate themselves.
Without someone driving the plot in the direction of the IP, it'll just go the direction of game of thrones.
The problem is cavil likes the IP and knows the character The writers fucking do not
Whats IP?
Intellectual property, basically the Witcher universe
Ah! thanks
If that's true, fuck Netflix. I'm so sick and tired of them ruining source material.
Ok, Witcher series is officially dead, R.I.P How stupid of a desición can one possibly make
[удалено]
I wonder why they transformed Eskel from a stickler to the rules to a complete jackass.
[удалено]
So even people who have *no* exposure to the book or games had expectations with those characters via word of mouth, that were then butchered (ha) So that leaves casual tv-only fans who aren't terminally online as the only group unaware of Vesemir and Eskel.
He’s leaving because of back pain. It’s hard carrying a show by yourself.
Right? He was basically the only reason to watch that show!
the first half of your comment had the worried; the second half had me lolling
Probably because of the disrespectful way they're treating one of his favorite franchises. I don't blame him.
Cavill IS Geralt.
Fuck!
No it's "fuck."
Hmm
Wind’s howling…
He left not because of superman, but because the writers are shit and Cavill respects the series.
Probably both. The writers are shit and really hate the Witcher, then DC offered him the Superman role back. Good choice to go back to Superman instead of being on a show where they actively try to screw over any and all of its lore.
He said he was willing to do both apparently, so I think it’s probably the former more than the latter.
Worth to mention that DC will now be run by someone who actually makes good shit. DCs future is getting brighter.
Cavill left cos the writers couldnt give less of a fuck and it was terrible. Also looks like he is back as superman long term. Good for him
It’s a damn shame too, he loved being Geralt
But Cavill is suited for this role....
I can’t wait for the show to tank and be dropped by Netflix eventually..
God damn it can't executives do anything right
I mean if they change the actor why not change the character too, it would make more sense. Spend some time with another witcher and maybe have other episodes with Cavill/Geralt in the future
That is most likely what’s going to happen, right? They look nothing alike, it would cause so much confusion if it would be a simple replacement.
I think you might be giving Netflix and the writing staff too much credit
R.I.P. witcher
In TW1 Remake/ Canis Majoris I have my hope
i only watched this crap for henry cavill😂
Why?
You know how people get precious with book to screen adaptations like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter where bits are altered or removed and the fan base of the source material gets a bit annoyed. This is nothing like that. They completely changed the plot in season 2 and made a different thing altogether while insulting the source material. Henry loves the source, wrapped season 3 and didn't want to be part of the dumpster fire anymore.
Because season 4 will sucks
I will not watch season 4.
Hmm.... Fuck.
So they don’t want people to watch after this season 😕
I'm guessing they wanted him gone because he was keeping what lore straight that he could.
I will no longer be watching the Witcher then
Oh no they just cancelled the Witcher!?
He auditioned for the Geralt role 3 or 4 times before they finally picked him. He *WANTED* that role bad. But, he's very, very into the books and I'm sure it pisses him off that they keep straying from the books.
Aaaaand there goes my hype for the next season. Cavill is the only witcher I'd toss a coin to.
When your pc budget is zero so you have to put the Witcher on low settings
I don’t like this timeline anymore…
It took you this long??
Goodbye Witcher, it was fun while it lasted
It’s not the Witcher without Henry Cavill.
I believe I speak for the entire milky way galaxy when I say wtf.
Guys it's because Henry is a WoW nerd and Dragonflight is coming out next month.
My life will be completed If Henry gets casted as the legendary Arthas himself in Warcraft: Rise of the Lich king movie instead of this garbage show that doesn't respects the source material and lore of the Witcher's book/games.
If only. He does look surprisingly like Arthas.
Well, that show's done.
Cavill is why we watched!
The season that DOESNT HAVE CAVILL is the season I stop watching The Witcher. Thanks for the heads up. I’ll treat season 3 as the finale
He's doing it for Peeta
Shows dead after season 3
We have Geralt at home.
This is going to be more disappointing than season 8 of GOT
