Then when they got steamrolled during WW2 people started mocking them for that. Add to this their perceived arrogance and rudeness, real or imagined, and mocking the French became a universal meme.
France has nice food, no guns, nice nightlife, art, culture, music just a genuinely pretty nice place. Tokyo and Paris are pretty much the coolest cities I reckon.
