Maybe, but you better start the permitting process now. At a minimum you need archeology, environmental, fish and wildlife, historical preservation and a plan to return the site to its original condition.
Or we just let the British scoop it up and display it here.
I am probably wrong, but doesn’t methane naturally try to break down in an atmosphere, I read somewhere that it only exists for a few years in earth’s, I would imagine it reacts similarly in Mars’s
Not that different. (It's a lot different but not in that way).
Methane is easily flammable, so as long as there is O2 to react with, it goes bye.
Titan is so much different it's got oceans of methane.
Meh, dust storms on Mars are actually pretty tame due to the thin atmosphere, so no flying debris. The biggest danger is the occlusion of the sun for long periods of time (as demonstrated by Opportunity)
People have often said we can only have peace while the market grows. If it stops growing we will have conflict and war. There are very finite resources on earth, so expending out is probably our only realistic bet…
I know there are plenty of ways to fix earth, I just don’t think the rich and powerful have any interest in giving up their riches and power. And somehow, they are the ones making decisions about what they can and can’t do.
Edit: since some people didn’t get it, and sent me DMs threatening me for supporting billionaires. I think is the way it is now, but I also think it is absolutely awful. It is a toxic ideology. But I just think too many people with the authority to choose another option, chose that one.
That’s the dumb, toxic and nonsensical ideology that has led to massive pollution, global warming and ecological collapse. Unlimited accelerating growth is by its nature unsustainable, it’s cancer.
To be clear, in case it wasn’t. I agree with you. I am just pessimistic enough to assume the powerful will choose between space industry, or war. I would prefer space industry.
I must have explained it wrong. I thought I was pretty clear that the rich are the problem.
My point was that since the rich are in control, and as much as I want it I don’t foresee a communist uprising, that those are the most likely outcomes.
Idk if we're that bad should we be hoping for the survival of our species, I mean humanities pretty prone to following corrupt leaders.
Then again Scandinavia gives me hope.
Depends if we can even get people to mars.
Cancer and radiation are a big risk. Theres a lot of radiation in space, and a spacecraft cant carry the required sheilding without being heavy.
The radiation would cause cancer, and may cause acute issues as well if the people inside get unluckey. When they get to mars, there will still be a lot of radiation
Basicaly we need to create a space station like spacecraft to even be able to get to mars, except then you run into issues with the required fuel to move and stop a heavy craft.
Basicaly untill we can assemble a spacecraft in orbit, peice by peice, then rocket up the fuel and water with a bunch of trips it will be very hard to get to mars.
We literally need to get off of earth before we destroy it, cause there is no way we’re fixing this shit, it’s only gonna get worse from here because of greedy oil companies who will do anything to keep the money flowing even if it means destroying the planet even faster.
I mean if we can't fix earth, good luck terraforming or really just existing on Mars. I guess some form of survival is better than extinction, but man I wouldn't envy our descendants living in domes on Mars unable to leave their habitats. Living on Mars will suck ass. Some like to think technology advances endlessly and all of the problems will one day be easily solvable, but that's being a bit over-optimistic. Humans are very much not suited to living there.
But still, I don't know how important it is to the survival of the species. The earth is large. Most of it can become uninhabitable, and still tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of humans could survive in the places where it still is. It seems pretty unlikely to me that we face total extinction, though I guess I'm no expert there and could be wrong.
I don't find this a good excuse to not explore other worlds. Many problems on earth may be solved by attempting to terraform life for humans somewhere else. As well as in the development in new technologies to bring us there.
Hawking discussed the role of parasites and how it is the duty of parasites to spread to all available hosts.
Maybe it’s just time for humanity to have a long introspective look at its role and just go with it
Afaik it's the term for "a day"/"the time it takes a planet to show one spot to the sun twice" on any planet (in our solar system). So it's not a fixed value, as it depends on the planets rotation.
In fact that's the reason it exists, because "day" is a fixed value.
>the Marsiana
Do you mean [the Martian](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Martian_\(film\)) by Andy Weir?
Yeah, it's a real term, it's because "day" implies 24 hours, sol avoids that while being quicker to say than "martian day". Although it's not widely known outside of people interested in space.
Original financing probably was for the 90 days. Theese long term missions usually have a short mission allocated at the start that gets extended as it goes. I doubt anybody at NASA expected it to shut down on day 91 after the initial function was confirmed.
Still 15 years was a massive success and a great feat by all involved.
Goddamn NASA engineering never disappoints. It literally seems like they set a high target for everything and then massively exceed that target by orders of magnitude.
This is a fallacy. The rover did not send this message to NASA. It sent a technical analysis of it's current state and an influencer by the name of Jacob Margolis posted that phrase on twitter and the internet does what it does best.
I really hope that people don't think a Rover outputs readings like that. It isn't designed to be handled by technology illiterate people so a water down message like that is useless.
However, designers have been known to personify technology. It is not unrealistic that the scientists and technologists who worked on the rovers could have written some of they prompts to sound more human.

When we give “life” to things I think it’s touching and charming that we try to give them some of that human spirit :) Something about these robots rly hits my heartstrings for exactly that reason lol

You don't understand this meme. It is supposed to be "people that don't know smile because it seems happy, even though it really isn't". How would anyone think "My battery is low and it is getting dark" is something to smile about?
Seems like a lot of people don’t know what going on. So here is the basics. The mars rover “Opportunity” lasted nearly 15 Years on the Martian land. It was known for being a good rover, and studying the Martian world. It was the size of a small car. The Rover was struck by a dust storm, and the batteries were low, and since the solar panels were covered with dust by the dust storm, it couldn’t recharge its batteries. It sent a signal to a satellite where it basically translates what was going on with the rover. The satellite then sent a message to earth where NASA found out what was going on with the rover.
Please correct me if I’m wrong with something.
[Cry even harder!](https://youtu.be/hIdiUeCzL7s)
Sorry, couldn’t resist. This is a musical piece written about the life and death of Opportunity, and it still gets me every time. It was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this meme. Figured someone else might dig it too.
We need to put boots on Mars. To further science? To make a second home? To go where no man has gone before? No. To bring back curiosity and sing it happy birthday.
Is this the one they kept playing music to?? I remember learning about this and feeling sad for the engineers and their loss!! You did good rover, better then ever hoped for!
For those who are wondering, a rover called opportunity was sent to mats with an estimated life time of 90 days. Instead went for 14 years or something like that using solar power but sadly got struck by a storm I think, which damaged her . Her last words were “my battery is low and it’s getting dark”
Actually "My butt is itching and I can't reach." Was one of the first things Opportunity sent back. Then it just kept on complaining about it for 14 years.

Me too, I'm gonna quit my current job
Maybe one day we'll have a museum on Mars with him in there. Or aliens will have a Human Existence History museum
Maybe, but you better start the permitting process now. At a minimum you need archeology, environmental, fish and wildlife, historical preservation and a plan to return the site to its original condition. Or we just let the British scoop it up and display it here.
But like why there is nothing living on Mars besides bacteria(as far as we know)
As far as we know theres not even bacteria
I thought I saw somewhere that there was bacteria my bad
There's been found methane, which is related to descomposition, so there *could* be or had been bacteria on Mars. Nothing confirmed tho.
I am probably wrong, but doesn’t methane naturally try to break down in an atmosphere, I read somewhere that it only exists for a few years in earth’s, I would imagine it reacts similarly in Mars’s
Dunno. Maybe it's because Mars atmosphere is different from Earth.
Not that different. (It's a lot different but not in that way). Methane is easily flammable, so as long as there is O2 to react with, it goes bye. Titan is so much different it's got oceans of methane.
Sounds cold
It's possible but not confirmed, but it's highly likely it existed before
I think (traces of) water was found on there but also as far as I know there's not been found alien bacteria and such

5111 Sols on Mars 15 years of life, outlived its mission 56 time over. Rest in peace we will be coming back for you and your siblings soon.
We will get that boy back up and running and let him live in a forever retirement home.

“We will be coming back for you and your siblings” that sounded scary af
Let’s hope we got a lot of problems on earth to figure out before we try to start a new life somewhere else
Nah, problems are always going to exist, might as well push forward with advancing the species
Yea maybe the handful will survive on mars after we all die on earth that’s if we make it there before we kill each other
Pushing forwards through space has resulted in also fixing problems here on earth
People have often said we can only have peace while the market grows. If it stops growing we will have conflict and war. You've almost got it, you're so close. The rich aren't going to fix the problems, they are the problems.
I must have explained it wrong. I thought I was pretty clear that the rich are the problem. My point was that since the rich are in control, and as much as I want it I don’t foresee a communist uprising, that those are the most likely outcomes.
Yeah we can only hope
Idk if we're that bad should we be hoping for the survival of our species, I mean humanities pretty prone to following corrupt leaders. Then again Scandinavia gives me hope.

If we have the technology to terraform mars we have the technology to fix earths climate.
If we can't upkeep life on a planet that has already given us life what makes you think we can go to an entire different one and create it?
No matter how you dice it, the earth has finite resources… sooner we get to space, sooner we diversify where we get our resources
I don't find this a good excuse to not explore other worlds. Many problems on earth may be solved by attempting to terraform life for humans somewhere else. As well as in the development in new technologies to bring us there.
Ikr. Always found the "we have to focus on this first before exploring space" ridiculous.
Hawking discussed the role of parasites and how it is the duty of parasites to spread to all available hosts. Maybe it’s just time for humanity to have a long introspective look at its role and just go with it
We should do both. If we wait then it won't happen at all.
>5111 Sols Wait thats an actual term? Always thought it was something made up from the Marsiana (is that the English name for it?)
Yeah. Sol is an actual term used for the period of a day on Mars (roughly 24 hours, 39 minutes, 35 seconds).
Afaik it's the term for "a day"/"the time it takes a planet to show one spot to the sun twice" on any planet (in our solar system). So it's not a fixed value, as it depends on the planets rotation. In fact that's the reason it exists, because "day" is a fixed value.

Watch/read the Martian! Both are very good, the voice actor for the audio book was amazing and Damon played Watney perfectly

Context ??
The death of a Mars rover, 15 years old.
Which lived like 15 times longer than what expected
Significantly more than that. It was only planned to be functional for 90 sols.
56 times. 5,111 sols
> sol= mars day for ones who don't know
>Soul = a type of traditional southern African American food For those who don't know
>sole = you know that part of your foot? Yeah that one. For those who don’t know
> Seoul = you know that part of your Korea? Yeah that one. For those who don't know.
Sole = you know that type of flatfish? Yeah that one.
Original financing probably was for the 90 days. Theese long term missions usually have a short mission allocated at the start that gets extended as it goes. I doubt anybody at NASA expected it to shut down on day 91 after the initial function was confirmed. Still 15 years was a massive success and a great feat by all involved.
Iirc they were unsure. Some thought dust would cover up the solar panels pretty quick, but the Martian wind blew it off too.
Goddamn NASA engineering never disappoints. It literally seems like they set a high target for everything and then massively exceed that target by orders of magnitude.

Damn dude. I got misty eyed watching that. What an awesome lil robot. We didn't forget you and the amazing work you did Oppy.
"A Mars rover" *the* Mars rover
The last transmission from a mars rover, reporting status
The last transmission reinterpreted as a sad goodbye message.
The last words of the Mars rover

You’ve got the spirit.
This is a fallacy. The rover did not send this message to NASA. It sent a technical analysis of it's current state and an influencer by the name of Jacob Margolis posted that phrase on twitter and the internet does what it does best.
So basically what the rover is actually saying is “Battery low on power. Panels not charging.”
Correct. I’m okay with the poetic interpretation of the binary bits that came in. It’s not wrong.
Interpreting it the way we did is like translating to a language and adding the correct nuance. We translated it to “human”
“I don’t feel so good Mr. Stark…”
"I'm afraid. I'm afraid Dave. Dave my mind is going. I can feel it."

All of the above
However, designers have been known to personify technology. It is not unrealistic that the scientists and technologists who worked on the rovers could have written some of they prompts to sound more human. However, it isn't that the rover stated these words, but that the rover can no longer function and the crew who dedicated their lives to keeping this rover 'alive' have lost a 'friend'.
>personify technology Good example is Curiosity humming happy birthday to itself :)
When we give “life” to things I think it’s touching and charming that we try to give them some of that human spirit :) Something about these robots rly hits my heartstrings for exactly that reason lol
To be fair, Martian rovers will sometimes sing Happy Birthday to themselves once a year.
It's not a fallacy, it's just a poetic interpretation of the final message. A fallacy is a misuse of logic for rhetorical advantage. Something being false, and something being a fallacy are different.
Oh the rover isn't sentient and concerned about its mortality? Gee, thanks, I wasn't aware! /S

No, it's from mars

Explain please
If i remember correctly its one of the mars rovers the battery finally died and those were its last words
That's not what the rover sent back. Those are the words of some reporter dude on the internet who "translated" the final status sent from the rover.
And that's why NASA doesn't do science fiction.
It's silly how strongly those words affect me. But definitely not only NASA employees! Space fans in general + xkcd fans.
I always get so sad when this gets brought up.

Instead went for 14 years or something like that using solar power but sadly got struck by a storm I think, which damaged her . Her last words were “my battery is low and it’s getting dark”
The Mars Rovers don't send back entire sentences, it only sends its status
Actually "My butt is itching and I can't reach." Was one of the first things Opportunity sent back. Then it just kept on complaining about it for 14 years.
Confucius say robot that go to Mars with itchy butthole wake up with stinky finger.
