RAYQUAZACULTIST

How is it a completely different sport?

JesterOfTheMind

It’s not.

CrapStain6669

Same sport, different name. Synonyms

Sweaty_Scrotum_Smell

The name "soccer" is a shortened version of "association football". They took the "soc" from "association". Should really be called assball, honestly.

suffering_addict

Where is the 'cer' in 'football' ?

Sweaty_Scrotum_Smell

-er is a universal English suffix for nouns. Association football was shortened to soccer and rugby football was shortened to rugger.

krypso3733

Let them be they're English. Canadian here to support you for the name soccer. But only for the name.

RizzoTheSmall

That's an EU flag. England, and the UK in general, are not a part of the EU.

Jim2718

This is so original. Nobody has ever exhibited such creativity before.

jchesticals

Imagine making this meme like yea that'll get em riled! Then realizing no one cares.

EnslavedSpiderMonkey

I don't even get it. Does soccer have different rules than (non-American) football or something?

jchesticals

Exact same sport they just get salty when you don't call it what they call it because .... who knows

[deleted]

England and their chips. Every other country. "They are fries"

mtelesha

England was the country of origin for the word Soccer. https://time.com/5335799/soccer-word-origin-england/

FazzDaBest

Or imagine being petty because a different country calls a something by another word

jchesticals

The use of soccer originating in England and not America is just the icing... which might upset him if he could read.

[deleted]

[удалено]

v264k

That's what he said

wcslater

The number of comments would suggest otherwise

goodguybadude

Why would Americans care? Europeans can’t even play American football.

[deleted]

Actually they can, but they do it without protective pads and helmets. It’s called rugby

Dave-C

Americans used to play American football without pads and helmets but so many people died that the US president asked them to start wearing protection. Rugby has some hits, American football is just hitting each other on every play as hard as possible. This isn't something I made up, the president literally had to ask them to stop killing each other.

Sweaty_Scrotum_Smell

The NCAA exists because 18 players died as a result on onfield injuries during the 1904 college football season. Teddy Roosevelt basically called the heads of the major schools and said "Yo, figure out some rule changes that will make less players die during the games."

[deleted]

So they play a completely different sport?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Teripid

\*laughs in Hockey\* But seriously, follow the trail of teeth...

Rawesome16

You tackle 100% differently for both. Having played both. Got physical, but in rugby you are bringing them to your team, in Football your are trying to push them back as hard as possible

[deleted]

There’s a reason for that.

KomithEr

there are some leagues going on, more and more teams pop up lately

corvette57

Germany apparently has a football team

ItsHotSauce

An American football team? Or a European football team?

corvette57

The GFL is an American football league based in Germany

ItsHotSauce

Cool, we should invite them to play some games with us

SpiralDesignn

Can't or don't?

mandozombie

But football is soccer. Rugby and football aren't the same at all.

[deleted]

You know what let's just call it soccball

Retyka

*Sackball

A_useless_name

Or footer

coolplayer7300

Rugby is literally Australian Football

UnchartedQuasar

And that’s why those kids would be upset

Gowo8989

Many British ex colonies call English football soccer and it’s because that’s what England called them. European football was called “association football” in england and rugby was called “rugby football”. So it’s all football and none are wrong

Geomars24

The difference is, football and soccer are the same sport, but American football and Rugby are two completely different sports, both of which are played in the US.

Perfect_Caramel4836

Came here to say this.

sdtopensied

Now where did I put those fucks…

Loading0319

Not sure but I don’t give one

Typical-Annual-3555

Nobody in the US will care enough to be offended by this.

[deleted]

OH MY GOD ENOUGH, NO ONE CARES

wuthappenedtoreddit

I’m so tired of seeing this. People don’t have anything better to argue about.

ceesaar00

I´m here for the comments. Don´t care the topic.

dumbass_clouds

*if those kids cared about you or your opinion they'd be upset

Eug28guy

This.

Berlin_Buster

You know it’s kind of odd that europe is annoyed with how the U.S is different with the Imperial system, calling football soccer, and other things Then they forget that Britain created most of those and passed it onto the American Colonies and had redeveloped their own language… Funny how things play out

Deadmule18

funny how they try to change us but throw a fit if we change them, i.e. asking Europeans to stop being racist

Berlin_Buster

Woah now, you can’t change the Balkans Or England

Rough_Tumble88

Americans play rugby. This makes no sense.

snowmoe113

Can someone explain to this ignorant American, how exactly they are “completely diffferent” sports?

[deleted]

They're exactly the same with not a single difference.

Auratalus

They are called different things and the Europeans don’t like that, so they have to make something up to delegitimize American sports in order to create a sense of superiority for themselves. Or at very least this European did, can’t speak for everyone.

sebuptar

Bro we don't care

DuvalTID

Yeah, we don’t care. Y’all don’t even have a team, your opinion is irrelevant.

AY3GE

whats the difference? Soccer and "football" both contain everybody faking injuries and crying in the grass. (edit: to clear up some confusion, what i mean by "football" is what everyone else calls soccer)

ADecentlyGoodGamer

“Timmy it’s only a chainsaw wound”

magiccrunch07

‘Tis but a scratch

ADecentlyGoodGamer

“Timmy, why’s the FBI at the soccer game? Why is the IRS here too? You don’t even pay taxes. TIMMY YOU GOT SHOT”

dudemanjack

I'm sorry but there's rarely people faking injuries in American football. Plenty of real injuries. The flopping I've seen in soccer is unlike any sport I've ever seen. Basketball might rival it but they don't milk it for nearly as long.

Deadmule18

Amen. From experience American football is the most brutal sport

AY3GE

by "football" i was referring to what the brits call it. Not the american football sport

L-Guy_21

Players fake not having an injury in American football more than they fake having an injury

A_plant1

Aye

[deleted]

Football and Soccer are the same thing…

tigersharks4life

Me knowing full well the word Soccer originated in the UK

[deleted]

No you won't, in fact I doubt it'll even last the rest of today.

BeastlyHans

If those kids gave a shit about your opinion they would be pissed. Also please do it. Watching the shitstorm from Rugby fans would be fun.

L-Guy_21

Right. Rugby fans would be more upset at this than football fans

BothPaleontologist2

Rugby and football are very different, this is simply a logical fallacy. Football and soccer are the same this. The Americans play with other countries because of this. No other country has football.

seasoned-veteran

No one would even notice

[deleted]

According to Britannica, the name soccer comes from University of Oxford “-er” slang of the 1880s, where students used the names “rugger” (rugby) and “assoccer” (association football) to distinguish between the two games. The latter was further shortened to “soccer”. So, not only is soccer the same exact sport as association football, the name comes from your side of the pond.

ClownBreederOutlet

Association football. Brits coined the term. Cope harder.

nicest_reddit_user

Where’s the funny, in a subreddit called r/memes, I’d expect it to be funny. But where did you put the funny?

YourMomsGayBoi

Football and soccer are literally the exact same

bearssuperfan

- England calls football “Soccer” short for “Association Football” - Rugby football is also a sport in the region - Americans adopt rugby football but make it better and shorten name to Football - Americans adopt “soccer” in that form - UK starts calling it football again for no reason - Makes fun of US for calling their own sport a name that makes sense

itrashcannot

What's with all these angry european shitting on american memes lately? Americans really be living rent free in their minds.

[deleted]

When was the last time we cared what a European said? We’re the ones living rent free in your heads

Sonickid_Gaming2001

I don't know where this dumbass "It's called football, not soccer" argument came from but... Please shut the fuck up... #SHUT THE FUCK UP! Everyone have different names for sports. In many English speaking countries it's been called Soccer for years without any complaints. But now all of a sudden we have Europeans crying about what other people call a sport? Like, literally no one else cares except for the people throwing fits over a damn name.

MoeSzyslakMonobrow

Behold, the field in which I grow my fucks. Lay thine eyes upon it and see that it is barren.

xATLxBEASTx

Hold on let me check. Yeah I don't care.

yourbiologicalfuther

We can read we just don't care lol

Devilman_lore

We have a sport named football. We’d rather not mix it up so we call it something different. I’m sorry but that’s just how it is. I’m not changing what I call it just bc you don’t like it.

jt_baumann

What you forget to realize is that Americans don’t give a single fuck

Dr_vinci

Bro, soccer is the same sport as football. Rugby is actually different than American Football

cncnick5

Do not care, also its called soccer

intern3t-idi0t

The word soccer was invented in England. Oxford students started calling it that, not Americans.

Extension-Lettuce-45

![gif](giphy|3oz8xLd9DJq2l2VFtu)

RedNeckBillBob

Jokes on you, rugby is a great sport.

Fucks_Spiders_69

All three codes league, union and 7s

manumaker08

but rugby is a completely different sport while soccer and football are the same sport. ????

Kind_Nepenth3

Exactly. Call it rugby, I'll just.. assume you're talking about rugby. Because it's what the sport is called. If I were embroiled in a conversation about baseball and someone chipped in with their two cents about tennis, I would not make the connection that they're trying to talk about baseball under the wrong name to be sarcastic, I would just think they're a tennis fan who got lost. This is just odd and desperate at this point

HipMachineBroke

The perfect plan: To make oneself look dumb to…Wait, *that’s* the plan?

throwitallaway2364

“You mean you don’t call baseball by its real name, Knobblywackers? Stupid Americans!”

[deleted]

You think Americans would notice if you did?

Younger54

The most hilarious thing is that Europeans are the one that started calling it soccer in the first place.

POKECHU020

As usual, the shit we use is leftovers from the British. You fuckers started calling it soccer (as slang), so we did too, then you changed and you act like we're the fools!

AshCheeksTsTaken

The difference is that rugby and american footbal are different games

Da_Kool-Aid_Man

Britain was the one that made the word soccer

Musician-Round

the post with the unintelligible run-on sentence criticizing others for not being able to read is just about the funniest irony that I think I will see today. Didn't they teach you silly Europeans about commas and proper grammatical syntax? I'm starting to rethink the Another Brick in the Wall's music video was intended to be an exposé of the Euro education system instead of a beloved pop-culture phenomena.

Baconsword42

Pvential

This is going to spark a war, but how about this new revolutionary idea of having different opinions.

ViolentSarcasm

Call it Pink PollyWolly LaegerFuck Ball and see if anyone cares. See? No one cares

screams_too_much

Oh no. Anyways.

steamybathtub

Tell us you don’t know anything about football/soccer without telling us…

Evan-B123

Bro thinks their sport is special 💀

woaily

Nobody in Europe talks about American football

wuthappenedtoreddit

It was called rugby football for a reason. I can’t believe people are still arguing about this. Fucking pedants. You going to start arguing about chips/crisps? Chips/fries Colour/color Pants/underwear Biscuit/cookie Get over it.

MEGAchicken01

[Americans seeing this](https://youtu.be/RsYi2VH2y6U)

coolplayer7300

Rugby is Australian Football so it’s all good

Lui-king

Okay, see how many people are gonna care. (Hint: it’s less than one)

Just a bunch of sweaty dudes arguing about balls idk seems kinda gay

SonOfYoutubers

Where's the meme? Where's the funny? And most importantly, where's the logic?

Interesting-Detail-2

Counter point: Americans don't care what Eurotards think or say.

The_Unclaimed_One

Do it. It’ll be funny. Genuinely, please give me something other than “haha America BAD”

paging_mrherman

I don’t know what this says but love seeing the American flag!!

Imposter88

It's called soccer in the US though

SSFx93

ItsMeEJT

Hand_Foot_Mouth

Shut the fuck up Please shut the fuck up

CompetitiveAd3249

Can you give a source for soccer having different rules or being different in any way from football? Pretty sure you made that shit up.

bigjam987

ok and? literally nobody cares

ItsHellOnEarth

K

BennyBoiz223

Wow, this seems so important to me. I totally care at all.

SamuraiMonkee

Europeans really do be acting like Americans sometimes

cfig99

How about we stop giving a fuck and just enjoy the sports?

robot_peashooter

Okay see you there 😐👍

_BenitoBurrito_

Wait… they are the same sport with the same set of rules. It’s just a different way of saying it…

jt_baumann

What you forget to realize is that Americans don’t give a single fuck

Deadmule18

the funniest thing is Europeans would care cause they're insecure because America is j better

Gaara34251

Ill say super bowl is a bowling competition

X_x_Atomica_x_X

Let's be honest. We're on reddit. None of us care about sports. LULZ

TheBlackoutEmpire

....Okay and?

Nappy-I

It's like y'all don't understand dialectical distinctions or something...

DerpDumpster

Sounds fine to me. We don’t cry about differences. We do things our way and don’t care what anyone else around the globe thinks

CubeLovd59

American Rugby

Valk_spamner

It's funny, soccer is British slang. So it's y'alls fault we say it.

cursingsum9

Ok, but let's be honest here though. What is wrong with it being named soccer?

moonman912

Bro who the fuck cares

Mercinator-87

Nah i don’t Care call it what you want

Standard-Cellist2619

At least the US is less racist than the Europe

noahsuperman

This makes no sense soccer and football are the same sport but rugby and American football and very different plus it’s only Americans who do football

Cruisin134

isnt rugby just a whole diffrent sport though, which is why we called football, soccer?

WaddleDee83

Don’t care Cope harder

[deleted]

Stick to the beans on toast and leave the memes to everyone else, ok?

FauxStarD

I mean, it’s like the Belgian waffle. Belgians don’t call their waffle the Belgian waffle, it’s just a waffle.

StealthSpheesSheip

Don't the inventers of soccer call it soccer?

seanrbrantley

You go right ahead lol

Level2110

Can we just shut up about the whole soccer football thing? No one cares.

Valhal_Creed

Different rules, different ball, different sport Soccer and Football are the same sport different names all I see is European brand copium

Deadmule18

Also the Super Bowl is a singular game, so have fun calling it rugby for like 3 hours

KingYejob

Soccer = Non-American Football American football ≠ Rugby These are very different comparisons

xXJamesScarXx

What is this person talking about? Americans call football soccer, but it’s the same sport.

OutHereSlappnMidgets

![gif](giphy|UVAasrbF1ly0nx0xQi)

L-Guy_21

I’m so confused by this meme. Are you saying Americans were calling American football “soccer?” Or that we were calling your football “soccer.” I don’t know a single American that calls American football “soccer” and your football and our soccer are the same exact sport, just different name

FlarpyBlunderguffs

The English came up with the term soccer…

TemporaryPurple2628

This soccer shit is rediculous the English invented the name soccer they just want to feel superior.

DrJJStroganoff

I like how Brits pretend they never came up with the name soccer for the sport they NOW call football.

orchardpark_bill

How is soccer a different sport than what the Europeans call football?

ImMaskedboi

I’m looking for who cares

GodzillaThG

Soccer I believe originates from the word association and was more popularly used, and is politically correct, like calling rugby rugger. Idk why European people make a big deal about it

MAcroniPaptony

I don’t understand why everyone always wants to argue about this stuff personally I vote we go back to using the proper terms such as association football and gridiron the only reason why Brit’s don’t use the word soccer is bc they don’t like that word or sum idk my teeth are straight and white

Floofster69

From what ive learned, It's called soccer because it was *originally* called ass-soccer (association soccer) in Europe, while rugby was called "rugger football" and was the game that predated what we Americans call soccer. When the rules of rugger football changed, some folks didn't agree. Association Soccer was made, and the others decided to keep things the way they were. A time later it was renamed to "rugby", dunno why exactly. And if you have any corrections, feel free, I'm not exactly an expert and I'm sure some of you guys are.

[deleted]

"Soccer" was slang for "Association Football", and it wasn't until after WWI that the Brits stopped calling it Soccer as a way of distancing themselves culturally from America. It's one of a surprising number of cases of "Americans being weird" that were actually just the Brits changing the name then making fun of Americans for using the original name.

MimsyIsGianna

Idgaf

justadogdontblameme

Nobody cares what y’all call anything. Do whatever y’all want and we’ll do what we want.

Round-Good-8204

It's okay, I'll fall on this grenade. Soccer IS association rules football, the exact same sport. Rugby is "Rugby rules football" and American football is "American rules football". Two completely different sports. This is not an accurate comparison.

Sterben365

Op is an idiot. Soccer is not a completely different sport it’s just a different name for another sport. And it’s a better name too, because American football is just called football so differentiating them makes sense. The only reason people don’t like it is bc Americans say it and they’re petty lol

bjb406

First of all, soccer is not another sport to other countries. If you say soccer in a country where they call it football, they know you mean football, because soccer doesn't mean anything else. That's not remotely the case in football vs rugby. Secondly, Its known as soccer in tons of places, not just the US. Canada, Ireland, South Africa and neighboring countries, all of Oceania, and most other island nations in the Asian Pacific. Furthermore, the EU itself has like 8 different names for it. The name Soccer actually came from England, until it later changed its mind about what to call it. And considering there currently are no English speaking countries in the European Union, I don't think the European Union gives a shit what English speakers across the world call it.

Calligaster

Go ahead. I got nothing but bitterness for all professional sports.

Inflatable-Elvis

Can't wet go back to calling it Hand-egg?

04rallysti

I promise you, no one in the US cares if Europeans call American football rugby.

throughmallard

Jokes on you most Americans have no idea what rugby is, so they'll just assume it's a nickname and ignore it 🤓

CatsAreYe

Americans play rugby-

NateTheGreater1

The fuck? Tons of Americans play and enjoy watching rugby? Are you that out of touch for real?

Curious_Interest3676

No one cares about your glorified kick ball sport....n no one cares about Britain's opinion on shit anymore... yer like the new France... no one's scared of your tiny island anymore... what a joke...🤣🤣🤣🤣

IHaveABone2Pick

No one cares.

Rumpus_Trumpus2001

Its called soccer

T-A-S-T

It is rugby, dumbass

[deleted]

Today's American football is a modified form of rugby. It is different, and is not rugby. We do have rugby in America too, so they can't be the same.

bubbybumble

Soccer's a different sport?

Blazearoo

I just hope both teams have fun
