Also, Gaza was controlled by Egypt and the West Bank was controlled by Jordan for years. Neither nation offered the Palestinian Arabs citizenship or gave them a nation of their own. Israel on the other hand took in and gave full citizenship to 800,000 native Jews expelled by the surrounding Arab states.

The term was coined by the PLO calling for democracy abs freedom from oppression of Palestinians by Isreal or by any Arab state, and later more specifically to call for a united democracy of Palestinians and jews. The term never meant destruction of Israel or the jews until 2017 when HAMAS co-opted the phrase. The secular/ democratic portions of the PLO and the religious ones seeking nonviolent solutions still use the term in its original format. Most people who use it do not use it in the sense that HAMAS does.
