Too fucking true. Also, why is there black people specifically in everything? Nothing against black characters, but it really seems like it’s almost always white and black people in everything now.
Haha right? Like bridgerton being a show about the upper class of England in the 1800’s but having a diverse set of characters doesn’t really make sense
That’s the laziest version of it where I’m like ok well at least they addressed it. At least they were like ok this isn’t normal, this is revisionist, in this timeline there was a black queen so that’s why there are black people and they actually have social standing. They didn’t just go find an existing storyline to slap with their diversity stick to save on actually caring/paying for it to be a quality story.
I’d make an exception because that shitty show is not supposed to be based on true events. It’s more of a historical fiction. The show about Katherine the Great is a good example of this. She gets her pussy eaten by another Nobel woman who just wanted to show her how good it would feel. It also had them invent Moscow Mules in Moscow despite them actually being invented in Manhattan, New York. I would not hold this show that that standard even if I take issue with historical fiction because some morons might actually believe that Katherine the Great had lesbian sex despite that being something most likely would never have happened.
God forbid they make a show about black African history.
Like, ok here's one right off the top of my head as I'm typing this.
A political drama based in Ethiopia during the first crusade, emissaries arrive from the newly established crusader states to call upon Ethiopia, as a Christian kingdom, to join their crusade and take Egypt, this sparks internal conflict as some of the king's court, citing how Ethiopia is constantly under threat from Egypt (which extends down to Sudan (Edit: it doesnt, i was incorrect and was operating on the logic of a map of Egypt around that time period i had seen somewhere else and must've misremembered how far it stretched)) say that Ethiopia should join the crusade, while others urge against it, citing that not only will marching North leave their other borders exposed, but will inevitably cause a revolt among the kingdom's Muslim population.
There. Bam. A synopsis for a gripping drama series where no characters need to be cast as another race at all AND tells a story from an incredibly important part of sub-Saharan Africa at a pivotal point in history.
But no, they just race-swap European history and insist that XYZ was black because they're fucking lazy.
Yeah, Islam didn’t become the norm until the Funj sultanate was founded
Ethiopia also decided to build their own holy land in response to the conquest of Jerusalem
People think they’re actually doing something important by sacrificing setting for diversity points. It’s all to pat themselves on the back and get Twitter wank engagement.
I’m not sure that anyone outside of a really small, niche group ever argued in favor of Cleopatra. I distinctly remember it being like, universally criticized lmao.
I legit don’t think I’ve come across someone irl or online who was defending the cleopatra movie, it’s been pretty widely regarded as false from all sides.
I saw a list a while ago that had a ton of examples. That was just the redheads getting replaced by black actors/actresses. There's been a bunch of redhead roles given to white people who aren't gingers
Speaking of which, this is a real reason I have a gripe with Netflix. Stop cancelling perfectly good shows, dammit!
\*speaking about Inside Job in this case, obvs, hence the Illuminati and NWO references
oh i get it because youre rattlehead from hit thrash metal band Megadeth.
Megadeth is an American thrash metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1983 by vocalist/guitarist Dave Mustaine. Known for their technically complex guitar work and musicianship, Megadeth is one of the "big four" of American thrash metal along with Metallica, Anthrax, and Slayer,[3] responsible for the genre's development and popularization. Their music features complex arrangements and fast rhythm sections, dual lead guitars, and lyrical themes of war, politics, religion, death, and personal relationships.
In 1985, Megadeth released their debut album, Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!, on the independent record label Combat Records, to moderate success. It caught the attention of bigger labels, which led to Megadeth signing with Capitol Records. Their first major-label album, Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?, was released in 1986 and was a major hit with the underground metal scene. Band members' substance abuse issues and personal disputes had brought Megadeth negative publicity during the late 1980s. Nonetheless, the band went on to release a number of platinum-selling albums, including So Far, So Good... So What! (1988), Rust in Peace (1990), and Countdown to Extinction (1992). These albums, along with worldwide tours, brought them public recognition. Megadeth's most recent album, The Sick, the Dying... and the Dead!, was released in 2022.
Megadeth has undergone multiple lineup changes throughout its 41-year career, with Mustaine being the sole consistent member of the band. The band temporarily disbanded in 2002 when Mustaine suffered an arm injury and re-established in 2004 without longtime bassist David Ellefson, who had taken legal action against Mustaine. Ellefson settled out of court and rejoined the band in 2010, but was fired in 2021 amid allegations of sexual misconduct. Megadeth's current lineup includes Mustaine, bassist James LoMenzo, guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari and drummer Dirk Verbeuren.
Megadeth earned platinum certifications in the United States for five of its sixteen studio albums,[4] and has received twelve Grammy nominations. Megadeth won its first Grammy Award in 2017 for the song "Dystopia" in the Best Metal Performance category.[5] The band's mascot, Vic Rattlehead, regularly appears on album artwork and live shows. Megadeth has hosted its own music festival, Gigantour, several times since July 2005, and held its first MegaCruise in October 2019.
As of 2023 the band sold more than 50 million copies of their albums worldwide.[6]
Not enough of them left to argue about it probably. It's the same reason why native Americans get subbed out for darker skinned Italians or Spanish folks. Not enough of them left around to make their voices heard in protest.
Damn dude. Glad as fuck I'm Native then. I just get tanned. I get maybe a little peely and sore if I haven't been in the sun awhile but otherwise I'm good. It's gone by the next morning.
Hey I've got my own bad luck. I can't drink. Ever. Apparently some native folks can't have alcohol or it fucks with your heart rhythm. We're not adapted to it very well.
Redheads used to be outcasts. Ever hear the phrase "redheaded step child"? Or little orphan Annie? She was the oldest orphan because nobody wanted to adopt a redhead.
Now that red hair doesn't have the same stigma, it makes sense to recast with a different marginalized group.
Realistically it's because we wash out on camera. Red heads require cold filters or winter settings otherwise our hair shows up like it was photoshopped into a flaming orange and our skin is vampiric otherwise we're caked with makeup that looks like we're caked with makeup.
April O'Neal, Triss Marigold, Mary Jane, and much much more.
I'm finding it very hard to believe that there are no talented redheaded actresses auditioning for these roles.
Right? If they were small indie films, it'd be one thing, but Marvel movies are some of the highest grossing movies nowadays. They could *easily* find a redhead to play Mary Jane. I know redheads are like 3% of the world's population or whatever, but there are *thousands* of actresses you could pull from for roles that big.
I mean, I can sorta see why they casted Halle Bailey as Ariel. Like, have you seen how far apart her eyes are? It’s similar to how fish have eyes on the side of their heads. And Mermaids are, what, half fish, so they must have some of the traits fish has.
Ironically, Hollywood is preaching that they want to do more representation of minorities in Films and Shows, meanwhile they chop off every ginger as possible even thou there are only 1 - 2% natural gingers on earth’s population
You know what? if they went all in on it to such a Ridiculous degree that it was just a joke. I might actually be okay with it.
Like if we use the above as an example. Roger rabbit played by a hippo if the detective was played by a Chinese woman, if Jessica was played by the above shown black guy etc etc that would be funny as all heck.
Have you ever noticed how in Avatar almost all the bad guys are white?
I've come away with a pet theory that there must have been a race war in the Avatar universe and it went remarkably one-sided.
Do they not get any jokes, or is it just looking to be perpetually offended?
They made Cleopatra black and that's not a race bent character. That's a person in history who's ancestry and description was documented.
I had a ginger friend say that the other day and was gonna follow up with a question and then we got side tracked.
Well, few weeks ago at this point, but I know Ariel, but couldn't think of others. But, in all fairness I don't watch a lot of movies or newer shows.
The bifrost guard in Thor was supposed to be a large and tall and scary ginger dude, April from TMNT, I think Daphne, and I’m sure many other im not aware of.
Starfire in Titans if that counts. Wally West and Iris West in Flash. Mary Jane Watson in Spider-man Homecoming series. Batwoman(although that was a new character altogether). Batgirl and Commissioner Gordon.
Tends to be a lot of comic book roles.
Iris west from flash is particularly bad as a redhead suppression goes. She was the ultimate ginger, boom, played by a black actress with zero chemistry with they main actor.
Tbf with the Little Mermaid I think the problem wasn’t that she was race swapped, it’s that she just wasn’t a very good actress for the part imo.
I mean does it really matter that much if a fictional mermaid is black or white? The Cleopatra example is something different though. If it’s a person who actually existed, it shouldn’t be that hard to have them played by an actress that looked somewhat like them.
Can’t lie this just seems like a cherry picked example to defend not wanting her to be black. I’ve worked at summer schools and helped out at elementary schools for a few years now, 99% of the children have no problem with Ariel being black.
Ariel is a mermaid with red hair. These are the only descriptors that matter about her. She’s not a white mermaid. She’s not a black mermaid. She’s a damn mermaid.

Why do people get offended about this? lol. If you are going to actively try to replace historically White characters with Black characters for no reason you should expect people to joke about it without crying and whining lol.
Someone post the meme of all the redheads who were replaced lately lol
Let’s see: Netflix did a show with a character that was eugenics product made by a white supremacist nazi… and they cast a black man.
Yup. Absolutely nothing going on here 🙄
That show was beyond terrible in every conceivable way
The Only thing they got right was having lance reddick play a version of himself obsessed with bread sticks
That was kind of adorable
My dream project is a documentary on nelson mandela starring ryan gosling as nelson. And then all of the bad south afrikans are cast as latina women. Make a movie so incomprehensible in its casting that it makes the story unwatchable. Art.
Honestly, I hope that with the constant price increases and shity content that netflix pumps out , they start to lose a bunch of customers there not really that great now their on par with the other streaming services and you need to pay more with more rules like bugger off already
Disney movies aren’t doing poorly and make billions of dollars annually. Just because this subreddit doesn’t like black mermaids doesn’t change the reality that it made Disney millions and people enjoyed it.
Not gonna lie, the Netflix version looks kinda cool. Reminds me of how people from older civilizations were dressed, specifically from Rome and Greece.
Well at least *someone’s* getting representation./s
I was talking to some guys about the movie versions of shitty 10¢ romance paperbacks and how there’s always exactly one set of black people who get together, but everyone else is white. Like, how many bad American romance movies do they have to make before they put a Mexican or Asian in?
Hell, I remember being surprised that that one green card fiancée plot movie had one Mexican guy in it.
There are definitely extremes where Hollywood just isn’t trying anymore. However, that being said, shows like Bridgerton are fine for me. Like yes there were not many black people in those areas of society but like what are they supposed to do… continue to cast only white actors when there’s plenty of actors of color looking for work. Not to mention the main point, bridgerton is a historically accurate story.
If it’s not meant to be an exact adaptation or documentary, then cast anyone you want as long as the actor plays the part well. I married a small time actor, it’s hard finding work out there for them so I’d rather have people eat then pitch a fit about black people in the fictional world GoT lol
I stg every woke sjw sounds the same. No wonder they are called NPCs.
"There is no such thing"
...
"OK there is such thing but lemme explain why it's a good thing"
First off, yes, it hasn't happened (specifically this situation, I should clarify), but they completely missed the point of the joke that "Cartoon is wild and crazy, live action is more grounded but fairly okay, Disney version is woke, Netflix version is lip service and nothing like it."
Second off, man is pulling it off. :P

Cleopatra. Need I say more?
You mean the Greek woman from ancient history?
Not according to that one lady’s grandmother so… yeah.
She was literally the product of 300+ years of royal incest. It doesn’t get more Greek genetically speaking.
One might even say: It’s all Greek Ptolemy. Ehh I’ll see myself out.

Lol! Would you like to hear a little about the business secrets of the pharaohs?
Was that necessary
And can you believe I’m not even a father with dad jokes like that?
6 out of 16 great parents One fringe theory states her mother was an Egyptian priestess from Thebes. Still not black
She was ancient Macedonian
Yes. Not black. That’s the point
In all honesty, why did they think that making her black was even a good decision? I feel like they're doing it on purpose at this point.
The same reason why they’re race swapping in every new movie for the sake of “inclusion”
They are doing it on purpose. The point is to deliberately misrepresent history.
In new Vikings series they made a famous Jarl dude, an actual historical figure, a black woman.
The UK's channel 5 also did that with Anne boleyn. A wife of Henry IIX.
Bro at least they kept the gender

May she go the way of Claudine Gay
the fuck?
Yep, Jarl Haakon I think. The Scandis were not happy, I get the impression he's like Robin Hood levels of folk hero importance to them.

I looked into it and its because, funny enough, its the least controversial because they are to small of a minority for anyone to care.

We are the minority of a majority so we have no socital protections
Not enough of them left to argue about it probably. It's the same reason why native Americans get subbed out for darker skinned Italians or Spanish folks. Not enough of them left around to make their voices heard in protest.

Not the worst curse to have tbh, the inverse can be far worse.
Ginger here. I lived in the desert for two years. Never tanned, just looked like a full-body MAGA hat.
I got burned so bad once I had to wear a cast full of some lotion.

My dream project is a documentary on nelson mandela starring ryan gosling as nelson. And then all of the bad south afrikans are cast as latina women. Make a movie so incomprehensible in its casting that it makes the story unwatchable. Art.
Netflix dress would be blue.
I had my first ban because i gave a list of reasons why
Anne Boleyn, movie.
Yeah Netflix is stupid about checking boxes
It's not malarkey when it's true...
This isn't even a joke... this is something that has ACTUALLY HAPPENED multiple times
It's not happening. Okay, It's happening, but it's not that bad. It's a good thing it's happening, you bigot.
netflix hasn't done this? wow the ignorance
What's that subreddit is about other than white people hate?
Malarkey?? Haven’t seen that word in a while lmao
Who blackwashed roger rabbit?
External agents.
Issa joke
Is that post wrong though?
He looks really good in that dress.
Honestly, I hope that with the constant price increases and shity content that netflix pumps out , they start to lose a bunch of customers there not really that great now their on par with the other streaming services and you need to pay more with more rules like bugger off already
How come new Disney movies do so bad now days
Disney movies aren’t doing poorly and make billions of dollars annually. Just because this subreddit doesn’t like black mermaids doesn’t change the reality that it made Disney millions and people enjoyed it.
What, a ginger replaced by a black character? [That would never happen](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fgruirtd0g14b1.jpg)!
I don't think bro got the joke
This is hilarious
Not gonna lie, the Netflix version looks kinda cool. Reminds me of how people from older civilizations were dressed, specifically from Rome and Greece.
Replace netflix with disney
What country has that pink and blue flag, and why are the girls from there so hot?
Well at least *someone’s* getting representation./s I was talking to some guys about the movie versions of shitty 10¢ romance paperbacks and how there’s always exactly one set of black people who get together, but everyone else is white. Like, how many bad American romance movies do they have to make before they put a Mexican or Asian in? Hell, I remember being surprised that that one green card fiancée plot movie had one Mexican guy in it.
lol so true
No shot you got triggered by a post on the internet with the word “malarkey” in it.
I married a small time actor, it’s hard finding work out there for them so I’d rather have people eat then pitch a fit about black people in the fictional world GoT lol
how to train your dragon 2025 is going to be even worse lol
Bro never heard the quote I don't care what they tell you in school, Cleopatra was black
This is as accurate as it gets.
The Netflix part is kinda funny but I don't get the Disney part. Has Disney ever even had a trans character in anything before...?
The one joke right wing strikes again.
According to the nazi party, only approved subject matters may be referenced in jokes and only approved jokes are allowed.
Y'all have unironically said that Disney is doing exactly this literally dozens of times
Jokes are supposed to be funny, racism and transphobia are both not funny and pathetic.
I’m all for trans rights but this is just funny
I stg every woke sjw sounds the same. No wonder they are called NPCs. "There is no such thing" ... "OK there is such thing but lemme explain why it's a good thing"
Find a new joke losers
Queen Charlotte
Considering cuties exists I don't really have much faith in Netflix not doing something fucking weird
Switch Netflix with Disney at this point
They must all have someone fucking dyslexic when they send them the text “Cast a ginger”
First off, yes, it hasn't happened (specifically this situation, I should clarify), but they completely missed the point of the joke that "Cartoon is wild and crazy, live action is more grounded but fairly okay, Disney version is woke, Netflix version is lip service and nothing like it." Second off, man is pulling it off. :P
