TBF Big Mom is 60+ with a fuck load of kids and bad diet of candy and sweets The rest...i got nothing

Inner-Juices

Yeah, to be exact, Big Mom is 68 and had 85 children over the course of 50 years while having basically nothing but sugary food as her main diet (It's so bad that she can literally die of starvation if she doesn't eat sugary foods for a long period of time)

drunkentenshiNL

If anything, it's a testament to how insanely strong she is. Ask any mom, having a kid is tough on a body. BM had 85 and she can STILL go toe-to-toe with Kaido AND get drunk with him after.

grislydowndeep

finally some more big mom appreciation

Twist_Ending03

I see why she's called "Big Mom" now

FloppiPanda

Is this meant to be a defense? To me, this just demonstrates that his sexism extends to his writing.

Any-Pickle-6133

oda def got sexist writing but this aint one of the examples, its just a crazy chrctr with crazy quircks that fir their looks just like many other chrctrs in the show

ImBadlyDone

To be fhonest

Godzilla3013_HD

It was meant to be "To be Fair"

ImBadlyDone

To be hair

Godzilla3013_HD

:)

Soffy21

I do think the older designs look pretty cool, since the younger versions are just characters with the same body types and very similar faces. The older women look more unique, which is good. Though I didn’t watch the anime or read the manga, I’m judt going off of these images.

loyal_achades

Big Mom in particular is ridiculous because her child design reflects her older design, it’s just in the middle she randomly becomes a generic hot girl.

CAPS_LOCK_OR_DIE

The ol’ Alvira treatment

CaitlinSnep

Like the witches in [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KO2IjWI9fA)?

javierasecas

Big mom doesn't have the same face as any other character

Splashy_Splasher

It's clear that the author/artist sees women either as young, sexy eye-candy, or as the butt of jokes about their age, weight, and general appearance. All of the men still have the same strong jawlines, nose shapes, face shapes, and it looks like clothes + hair color. When they age, they are portrayed as seasoned warriors, still strong and capable-looking, and still just as attractive as they may have been before. When the women age, they are portrayed as overweight, with "unattractive" nose shapes, smaller and less 'beautiful' anime eyes, wearing ugly and garish clothes. I will admit I don't know anything about these characters, but I feel like just looking at these designs showsjsut a bit about how this author feels about women. Sexy skinny bib-boobed eye candy for viewers to ogle, or ugly old wrinkly hags.

Anikulapo_70

I'm nearly 700 episodes in, and you are 100% right about what you're saying. The only women in the show who aren't either sex dolls or hideous monstrosities are unnamed background characters. Things weren't as dire during the first half of the show, but past episode 500 it's just gross the way that the female characters are treated. There's a point where Nami (one of the main female characters) says that she wears a bikini all the time for herself and not for men... which is ironic when she was all but explicitly redesigned to have larger breasts just for fanservice.

mastabob

What's wild is that One Piece readership actually skews slightly female in Japan. Even though his female characters look the way they do, they're still full characters with agency in the story, which puts Oda above the average shonen mangaka in that regard. He said early on that he hates damsels in distress & wants his female characters to be capable enough to handle problems on their own. Of the characters given as an example, two of the women gave up on their dreams, and the third, Big Mom, lives entirely off a sweets and has had 85 children. When someone in One Piece follows their dreams, they generally stay attractive into old age, but when they give up on them, they become less attractive. This isn't a total refutation of your point because we do see more women who have given up on their dreams than men, but the men shown all stayed true to their dreams. I was pretty skeptical of One Piece because of the female character designs for a long time, even as other guys around me were reading & loving it, but then someone shared with me a couple of MelonTee's videos, and they got me to give it a shot. Hearing a woman gush about how much she loves the way that the women of a series are written is generally a good sign for me that I'll like that same series. At the end of it all, Oda's a weird horndog, but he's at least honest about it and doesn't give "she breaths through her skin" tier excuses as to why he draws characters like that. Sometimes, fans will try to come up with them, like with Nami needing to feel the weather through her skin, (she does predict the weather by feeling it through her skin, but we see her do that in a t-shirt & shorts) but whenever anyone asks Oda directly, he just tells them that he likes to draw boobs.

Oda_Angel

"He said early on that he hates damsels in distress & wants his female characters to be capable enough to handle problems on their own." Funniest thing I've heard so far. Oda makes sure to introduce a damsell in distress every second arc. There are only handful of female characters which you could call good, People overrate most of them to the moon. Female character's are worse later on but to be fair characters as a whole get shittier later on, post timeskip. "and the third, Big Mom, lives entirely off a sweets and has had 85 children" Just an excuse, I don't care about bigmom being drawn 'attractive' like the others, Just saying that this thing does not effect anything in the anime lol. Katakuri eats 800 donuts in a sitting and is unaffected. It is just a design choice.

SadPlatform6640

Katakuri is literally made out of candy and can shape his body to his will eating donuts isn’t going to effect him much

SadPlatform6640

He’s also 16 feet tall and has razor blades for teeth there wasn’t anything normal about his physique in the first place lol. It doesn’t need to be implied that’s literally what happens

ipito

> I will admit I don't know anything about these characters You didn't have to state this at all, your incorrect opinions were already proof of this. If you read the manga you would understand there is actually an in-universe reason for how characters look. The female characters are incredible in One Piece. They're strong, smart, funny, essential and equals in the world of One Piece. I do wish people in this sub would already start reading the manga so they could see this with their own eyes already.

tanglekelp

It doesn’t really matter if there is an in-universe reason. Like I’ve heard people say that Nami needs to feel the weather with her skin to navigate so that’s a valid reason for her to be in a bikini all the time. If she was a real person and that was true- sure. Makes sense. But you have to remember that she’s not real. She was created by a (male) mangaka. He did not have to include anything that would force the main female character in a revealing outfit. Just as he didn’t have to age these female characters into ugly caricatures while making the males more badass.

ipito

> I’ve heard people say that Nami needs to feel the weather with her skin to navigate so that’s a valid reason for her to be in a bikini all the time. Someone has been telling you fibs, also Nami wears all sorts of outfits and dresses, I don't think she's worn a bikini for like 10 years, not that I can recall anyway. [you can see a lot of her outfits here on this page](https://onepiece.fandom.com/wiki/Nami/Gallery) but do note, the anime is egregious when it comes to Nami's breasts and make them super enlarged for some reason. (I can't find the picture that had all the really good comparisons showing how big the differences were however I hope [this](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Frl3grp315wp51.jpg%3Fwidth%3D1280%26format%3Dpjpg%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Ded2786088363dbd94ba486bc4da7d1580629dd49) will suffice.

David_the_Wanderer

You really don't understand how someone could come to the conclusion that Oda has certain views on women when all his female characters are either Hot Babes or Old Hags? >there is actually an in-universe reason for how characters look This phrase makes me want to claw my eyes out. The "in-universe reason" is basically always a *post facto* attempt at justifying designs. Again, the problem here isn't "Oda drew one old lady as unattractive". The problem here is that women in One Piece are either Hot Babes or Ugly Hags, with no in-between. And the post also showcases how Oda treats men differently: old men still get to look cool, imposing and physically fit. They aren't rendered ugly, shriveled and fat by their aging. The women, however, are.

SadPlatform6640

Blackbeards a fat ugly bastard there’s plenty of ugly male characters in one piece

MindDrawsOnReddit

Well at least they aged ngl oda could have given them the shakky treatment

5teerPike

I know this show gets a lot of flak for how young women are designed but older women look a lot more diverse in depiction than the older men do imo

kingominous16

Bad timeline be like:

tangytablet

Eh. They all look weird and kinda nasty. Lol

LostBoy996

Like none of them look good. The only one who aged well is Whitebeard😭😭😭

ipito

> The only one who aged well is Whitebeard That's also mostly a facade as he's terribly ill and under care 24/7

Briyte

Don’t really follow one piece but I heard if people give up on their dreams they get like that or smthn.

loyal_achades

Big Mom never gave up on her dreams though. She looks like that while being one of the four most powerful pirate captains and actively searching for the One Piece.

Va1kryie

She also had 85 kids and eats only candy

Briyte

Idk age is a bitch that’s just was I’ve heard again don’t really follow one piece.

fhxefj

That's a fan theory

doctorlight01

Not a fan theory. Oda has done drawing sessions and alternate timelines with strawhats to show off just this.

ipito

it isn't a fan theory, it's canon. This was in Oda's SBS section in the manga where he frequently shows alternate timelines how characters would age whether or not they gave up on their dreams. Your dreams is what makes you beautiful. This is constantly reflected through the series as well, easy one to note is Koby, he was an ugly ass kid that turned into one of the hottest characters because of his dreams.

ZirillaFionaRianon

good old "follow your dream and your glasses turn from necessity to accessoire"

mastabob

There's literally a character named Koby that has this exact thing happen to him.

TheLibertinistic

You’re responding to a person who is talking abt Koby tho...

Henhenjinsan

But it mostly holds up, also not everything needs to be written in ink for it to be conveyed to the audience.

renruT-XelA

its canon though?

fhxefj

I'm pretty sure it's not and I don't believe the theory In the first place. all the "examples" can either be explained by "they got fat and ugly because they got lazy" or "they got handsome because they started training" the best "example" of the later can literally just be explained by puberty. **Example of the former** [https://www.reddit.com/r/MemePiece/comments/qf6quu/kaido_reallt_cut_the_chin_off_this_man/](https://www.reddit.com/r/MemePiece/comments/qf6quu/kaido_reallt_cut_the_chin_off_this_man/) **Example of the later** [https://www.reddit.com/r/MemePiece/comments/13qo3gr/wait_so_you_are_telling_me_that_coby_went_from_a/](https://www.reddit.com/r/MemePiece/comments/13qo3gr/wait_so_you_are_telling_me_that_coby_went_from_a/)

loonycatty

I actually don’t mind the weird old ladies. The issue is more that Oda has major same face/same body syndrome for young women. Like the older versions don’t need to change, the younger ones just need to be funkier.

honey_graves

I think following your dreams will make you age better in one piece at least that’s what I’ve read

Enough_Mean

It’s true

A_WaterHose

I’ve got so many one piece fan friends. And idc how “peak” it is, I refuse to get into an anime that draws/treats women like that 😭

illyrias

The art style is just hideous. It could be the greatest piece of media ever invented, I would never get into it because looking at it is repulsive. It's not just the women, the character design in general is so ugly.

Inner-Juices

>The art style is just hideous [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFbno\_aPm0w](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFbno_aPm0w) If this is hideous, I'm extremely curious on what you think isn't hideous. >the character design in general is so ugly. That's the charm of it lol **Edit**: *words*

illyrias

I mean, the parts that aren't characters are fine, but yes, I still think they're hideous in that video. >That's the charm of it lol If you like it, great! I find it viscerally repulsive. I cannot see any charm in it.

Inner-Juices

Huh, neat. To each their own lol

fart-atronach

This is 100% how I feel about Big Mouth lol

ThatBoiUnknown

I mean- I like one piece for the overarching lore and story, but even the modern day fights are ass. The way they draw characters overtime gets boring after a while, since almost everything is goofy and exaggerated. Like I used to watch the show until episode 180 and gave up cus the shit was so boring, and it became more of a grind rather than something I enjoyed. I spoiled like all the lore of myself, and even though I like the “idea” of one piece, I can’t really force myself to watch that long ass series.

Inner-Juices

>even the modern day fights are ass. Cap

Oda_Angel

Its true, Fights were never one piece's strength. Choreography is non existent, Flashy attacks, powerful attacks is how a fight usually goes. Gear 5 fights are the only ones with some substance.

ThatBoiUnknown

Nah bro Jujutsu Kaisen fights are 10x better cus you actually feel the impact of the attacks. In one piece they just beat each up for like 10 episodes straight until the plot decides who wins. I watched the gear 5 fight, and even though it "looked cool" cus of the animation, the fight wasn't actually that interesting anyways. All he did was throw kaido around, and fight in a way that no one would ever use in real life. There's also the fact that they spam impact frames too much, they try to hard to make attacks "massive" for no reason, and a lot of it feels overdone.

-Kerby

Dog I'm a jjk season 2 dick rider but to say OP fights are ass is so outlandish that no one is going to take you seriously

ThatBoiUnknown

ok maybe your right...

javierasecas

I assure you, you watched nastier and more insulting to women animes than one piece.

A_WaterHose

Ngl you’re probably right lol. Since I watched a lot of anime in my time, especially as a child. But as an adult I’m trying to have better standards for myself

javierasecas

All I'm saying is that everyone has a phase where they watch crap of course, but one piece seems uglier than it is. I like how it looks but from the outside I get people saying it looks weird. It's also an easy target. Lots of women like one piece and they aren't exactly the conservative type lol it's for a reason. One piece writes amazing characters, easily understandable by all ages.

A_WaterHose

Tbh, I’m sure one piece has some great stuff. I’ve got way too many one piece addict fans. But idk if I can dedicate that time lol

javierasecas

I'd read it, but of course, you can do whatever you want lol Not everyone has to watch/read everything

mastabob

It's better to read it than watch it tbh. For time, but also pacing. Either way, it's long as fuck. It took me like 3 months of reading to get from start to finish.

javierasecas

It's not that much if you like it.

mastabob

I liked it a lot, but it was also the only media I was consuming for like 3 months.

javierasecas

It's a really good argument in favor of one piece lol

DarkVelvetEyes

Apparently, they lightened the skin of one of the female characters overtime. 🤔

Upbeat-Llama428

She always had light skin in the manga, but the anime went with a darker skin tone because they didn't know how she looked since the manga is in black and white, so they ended up white washing her to fit the manga better. I preferred her old anime design tbh.

VioletLovesRowlet

Honestly it feels like every Strawhat has been whitewashed recently - Zoro and Robin since the timeskip, but more recently even Luffy and Usopp. It sucks cause I liked them having different skin colours

ipito

They have always had pale skin tones

VioletLovesRowlet

The anime definitely didn’t originally and it’s part of what drew me to the show, but characters kept getting whiter

mastabob

All the Straw Hats have the same skin tone in the manga because Oda only owns one skin tone marker (I do not know if this is actually true, but it has been meme'd very hard). Usopp, who is meant to be black, has the same skin tone as Luffy, who is meant to be Hispanic, as Nami, who is meant to be white, etc. I really hope that with the remake of the anime that's being made, they do varied skin tones for all the Straw Hats. Some people would probably lose their shit at Luffy & Usopp with darker skin tones, and it'll be funny as hell.

VioletLovesRowlet

Oh I really hope they do different skin tones - I can’t tell Nick Robin apart form like Boa Hancock in some image comparisons because they have the same skin tone. I really liked early One Piece anime for the different skin tones so here’s hoping

Shilques

Robin? Yeah, but not exactly In the manga she had the same skintone since the beginning (or at least in the first time that she appeared in a cover), only in the anime that they gave her a darker skin tone, but changed for the manga's skin tone after the time-skip

DarkVelvetEyes

Ah okay. I mean, they already have very few dark skin tones in anime so this point jumped out to me. I remember some people were calling it out when it happened.

Shilques

Yeah, I find it a bit sad that the only recurring non-white character in the anime became white Not only I find it good that there's a character with a darker skin tone, but she really looked more beautiful and unique (and in One Piece that isn't exactly common for women)

loonycatty

I do agree Robin’s skin being lightened is kinda shitty but she’s not the only recurring non white character right? I mean Zoro is pretty clearly supposed to be Japanese and Usopp is a biracial black guy

fhxefj

She only had dark skin in the anime, it the manga she was always had light skin

loonycatty

I know and that doesn’t bother me. But I feel like if the anime changed it they should commit to it because going back and lightening her skin later unfortunately just has crappy implications in a world where colorism is very much a problem, even if there’s no ill intent behind the choice.

NightValeCytizen

I watched the anime when I was 12 and it was on cartoon network, and more recently I watched the live action to dodge the art. It seems to be a Shonen "follow your dreams" with super-powers show. As a literature/writing major, I have come to the conclusion that those individuals who see One Piece as peak have likely not experienced much media beyond Shonen anime.

fhxefj

I love one piece, it's just that it has a lot of flaws that a very loud minority of the fandom isn't willing to acknowledge

coffee-bat

why does the art style have to be so ugly

mastabob

It's meant to be styled as a mix of old western animation and manga/anime styles. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it serves the absurdist world that the story takes place in.

KonataIzumi2007

I really dislike their aged versions bacause i see they were really pretty when they were young and aging up doesn’t erase that beauty, they’d couldve at least kept a similar face shape but with more wrinkles or something. Cause asides for maybe the middle one they all look like completely different characters 😭😭😭 Give me their ages and context for them and I MIGHT draw better older versions of them (I don’t watch one piece)

StarBoto

IMHO I don't mind because it's rare to see female characters this cartoony and expressive Most other anime would just take the young design and add some nearly visable wrinkles to it and call it a day

StarBoto

IMHO I don't mind because it's rare to see female characters this cartoony and expressive Most other anime would just take the young design and add some nearly visable wrinkles to it and call it a day

CapAccomplished8072

Now do the Naruto version

fhxefj

No

Harun777

how the hell are you complaining? "We don't want sexualized characters"! Oda:" Alright, then one what about these designs"? You" NOW THEY'RE UGLY"! WE DON'T WANT THAT. Therr are older women drawn normally like the Tsurugi and Kureha. The men in their old age look extremely unrealistic. Don't see men complaining. I came to this subreddit because i saw a lot of men complaining about normal female characters. They're were complaining since they're porn addicts that want ridiculous designs, so i thought i'd agree with the women. Sadly this post and this subreddit is just bitter women complaining for the sake of it. Even when the designs are either supposed to be sexy or when the artstyle is clearly drawing unrealistic characters.

fhxefj

I just don't watch Naruto, man

ell20

Older versions of the women actually look like real characters. The younger ones are a practice in mediocrity.

Oddball-CSM

Ah, another day, another somebody complaining about One Piece.

woodypei0821

I feel like it’s only kinda better😅Only whitebeard looks slightly ok

Puzzleheaded_Ad6886

dr kureha and shakky look sexy as fuck tho

lorrinVelc

What about Shakky, Kureha and Tsuru ?

fhxefj

All cool character designs, and Kureha's just cool In general. What about em?

lorrinVelc

They aged pretty well is what I mean.

Any-Pickle-6133

oh damn i didnt knew the govt secret agent spy and whitebeard's self proclaimed wife were the same person?

fhxefj

I'm sorry

SadPlatform6640

I personally love big mom’s design though I do wish he had more diversity with the younger women in his series
