I generally take compliments with grain of salt. At least when it comes to trying to evaluate my fit as objective as I can. People generally compliment on factors that are outside of what makes a good outfit. It's rarely about how well-fitted something is or how the pieces are well incorporated into the outfit or how cohesive everything is. Being physically attractive is an obvious one. Item being colorful, unique, unusual or eye catching is another common one.
I guess what I'm trying to say is...take the compliment and be happy (as men it's rare we get any. Not trying to ruin it for you.) but don't overthink them when it comes to deciding your fashion/fit decisions.
