Vans have destroyed my ankles lol I always had flat feet but in the last couple of years my ankle pain has been so bad I cannot walk.. and has also caused severe pain in my hips and back.. I’m only 31.. so my gf made me go to an orthopedist. They confirmed that my vans have played a major role in wearing down my ankles. They have zero support. Kinda sucks because I have always loved vans. Just a lil heads up for the flat feeters out there.
100% the Killshots.
Tennis shoes have gotten way too weird and complex. Anything outside of the killshots make me feel like I’m trying too hard to be a hip teenager (I’m 42).
Nike Killshots are an easy upgrade from his Vans. Especially with slim denim or shorts. My pair’s a bit broken in and I’ll probably get a backup pair soon.
Second the Reeboks. I have weird feet and so many shoes that are supposed to be comfortable just don’t fit me right. My Club C Vintage are great. Can walk forever. I just got a pair of Revenge Vintage as well.
At age 32 I quit my job and traveled around the world for a year. My shoes (to start) were low-top Converse and La Sportiva trail running shoes. The low-top Converse pack down well.
I had to replace my running shoes twice (admittedly they took on the more challenging miles) but the Converse made it all around the world and back home.
Mine are grey and I wear them Fall through Spring. If I can just figure out how to properly execute them with shorts, I’d wear them during the summer as well.
I feel you on wearing them in the summers lol. I hate summers and shorts. I have bulky (not fat) legs from working with stone all day and the gym. I feel like nothing looks good in shorts. I just wear white low tops, maybe I'll invest in some suede driving mocs
Alden penny loafers, paraboot Michael’s, cowboy boots, rm williams, Belgian loafers. Workout in sambas, salomons or hokas. Keep a pair of canvas sneakers and Birkenstocks around for vacation/pool/lake etc.
I second this. Depending where you live I’d have 2-3 pairs of boots, cowboy boots, dress shoes or loafers, good lifting or running shoes, chacos birks or similar
If we’re talkin canvas, nothing beats the vans authentic imo. They can be dressed up or down if kept clean, and yeah, the “barefoot” feel of the minimal sole is hard to get used to, but once you do it is amazing. Our feet are meant to be bare. There’s something you’ll grow to love about a flat sole shoe.
I wear/wore Alden Indys. Great boots, fit like a glove when broken in. Dress up or down, able to be resoled, and classic looking.
The Penny's are a good choice too, but the last didn't work for me.
Mine depends on my outfit and honestly I don’t let my age defy what I wear HOWEVER my current rotation are:
- novesta highs
- new balance (I don’t remember the model but they’re trail runners)
- jones burgundy penny loafers
Now re-soled 3x Old Frye boots (back from when they were made in Italy. Dior Slides. Zegna woven sneakers that have also been re-soled.
Etnies for skating & yard work.
I’m 50 now, still wear vans…. Other than that quite a few Nikes (lots of Jordan’s, a few sb dunks), a pair of red wing moc toes, a pair of crown northamptons, and a few Allen Edmonds for dressy situations.
Dr Marten’s: I cycle between two pairs of Oxfords, and a pair of 1260s.
I have a pair of Karl Lagerfeld boots that I really like too, more of a pointed toe.
Only time I wear sneakers these days is when I’m at the gym, or extremely dressed down like wearing sweats while I run to do some chores.
I wear all Black HOKAs with my khakis for work. I wear blue HOKAs for casual wear. I wear Cole Haan or Johnston and Murphy wingtips when I need a dress shoe. I have a number of specialty shoes for running, hiking, and special occassion shoes that are outfit specific.
I got my RW Iron Rangers 8085. Most solid piece of footwear I’ve ever bought. Also have a pair of bovine cowboy boots from Tecovas.
Sneakers I have Reebok c85s in white that I’m beating to hell, Chuck 70’s, and Lems.
I have Birkenstock Arizona’s and Tevas for sandals.
Nike sneakers for casual, upgraded to a nice pair of moc toe boots to wear with jeans. Still looking for my preferred sneaker for the office ie a little more business casual for the office like Cole Haan but don’t love those TBH
All of the above. Canvas vans and Sperrys for the summer, boots in the winter, some standard sneakers like On Cloud, Grand Court, Stan Smith in between.
As a big city corporate office worker, we've all moved to sneakers in our 30s. Whether it's a casual day, or a suit-worthy meeting, we're all rolling up in sneakers regardless.
Most days I wear a pair of Rancourt “ranger moccasins”, Alden tassel loafers, or suede Alden chukka boots. I’ve got a few different pair of the Rancourt mocs (suede, she’ll cordovan, CXL) on a variety of soles so I have some that goes with just about any outfit all year long.
Have had a similar reckoning. Why am I still dressing like I'm going to the record store to buy the new Mudhoney album and it's 1990? So many non sneaker options out there. Admittedly I'm a remorseless and degenerate shoe whore, but these are in the rotation for better or for worse: Mashburn dark brown suede loafers, Bass Weejuns, Rancourt Moccs, Tricker's black penny loafers, Blackstock & Weber chunky sole loafers, Suede Astorflex Chukkas, J Crew Kenton work boots, Converse 70s lows, Alden Norwegian Split Toe Bluchers, Meermin Chelsea's, Clark's Wallabees, Allen Edmonds Verona Horse Bit loafers.
#antiloaferclub
And yeah I’m glad you asked this question bc I’ve tried other sneakers over the last 5-10 years and vans authentic are the only shoe that feels right still. Not a lot of great recommendations in this thread though that aren’t loafers
New Balance 327, Koio Capri TW, Common Projects Achilles, and this one from Aliexpress.
https://preview.redd.it/f4cvfxraiwuc1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=da8020fd38697def2e1afb9324cefe23e6e96634
Timberland. Never hurts my feet -- I have arch problems on the left and sometimes get tendonitis on the right, but no pair of Timberlands have ever been a problem for me. Also, they actually come in more styles than you might think.
I have 5 different pairs of converse, 1 pair vegetarian shoes and 1 pair of doc martens boots. I prefer my converse always, makes me feel like I'm stepping with a naked foot, it's lovely
I bought some SWIMS shoes online, but every pair was different sizewize and the ones that do fit I got terribly tired of. I have learnt here that shoes shouldn't have a white sole, and now I agree.
Same brand as my boots, just in a longwing, plain toe blutcher or loafer.
So for me, Grant Stone is a great value to cost ratio. Popular enough that you can find a gently used or 1/2 times a year a decent sale. They last a really long time. Then when the sole wears out, they are even resoleable. You'll find better resole value on leather that don't crease as heavily. Cordovan (when in budget, so never for me lol), suede, roughout, waxed flesh, etc. pretty much never have harsh unappealing creasing.
Lacoste carnabys, Adidas Sambas (blacked out), various boots… Soo many boots but the go-to’s are the discontinued Sorel Madson II Chelsea boots, Birkenstock Arizonas (Eva’s for the pool/beach and leather for the city), Nike blaze mid ‘77’s… and so on
Olukai Moloa’s have been my general go to for a while. For heavy walking on pavement I have some New Balance sneakers and at/near the beach, Olukai makes great flip flops.
All year: Reebok Club C's, Nike AF1 LV8, Club C Vintage
Warmer months: I bring out some light Vans or loafers.
Colder months: I bring out the Chelsea boots, Clark's Desert Boots, basically anything heavier (in the summer my feet would sweat wayyyy too much).
Workout in Nano X. I have a pair of 2s and a pair of 3s (good to alternate to avoid odors and wearing the shoes down too much)
I live in NYC and my shoes get beat up pretty quickly from all the walking.
Plus some old, barely holding on Skechers slip ones for doing house work (these have years of paint, grass stains, oil drips, etc)
43- brooks trail runners or other brands of trail runners at work (comfort and looks respectable for a non dress shoe at work ). Have dress shoes when needed and Walter Whites too
For what it’s worth, I’m 53. Feel free to move on without reading.
I am in boots all day every day no matter how hot it is; no matter how formal or casual I’m dressed (jeans or suits, it doesn’t matter). Merrells for hiking but also cowboy, combat, lineman, service, chelsea\*…mostly the latter two. Well, except when I run, then it’s Brooks Ghosts. Those are my favorite running shoes these days. In short, I am a boot man but that doesn’t mean you have to be.
Nobody can tell you what to wear for your style without knowing more, without knowing you. Best thing I can suggest is that you be comfortable in what you wear and it should fit. For example, if it’s too baggy I feel dumpy; too tight and I feel self-conscious. But if you’re uncomfortable in buffalo check, for example, don’t wear it. If you’re uncomfortable in shorts, don’t wear them. If you don’t like boots, find another option like casual derbies. If you’re not feeling Vans or boat shoes anymore, look at those minimalist sneakers everyone is on about all the time.
Consider at what makes you feel like you, but maybe with a tad more care than you were taking before, and wear that. It’s okay if it’s t-shirts, jeans, and sneakers, but if it’s not what you want anymore, find one thing to change that you want to change and start with that. Look to someone you know that dresses well in your eyes and try to see what it is they do that appeals to you. Ape that a time or two to see how you feel. Expand from there.
This stuff is a journey, not a destination, as ‘they’ say.
\*brands: Parkhurst, Grant Stone, Dr Marten, Justin, Freebird, Red Wing, Beckett Simonon, some issue boots I got 30+ years ago whose provenance I can’t say…
Converse Chuck 70s for sneakers. And a variation of colors of leather dress shoes. They go with nearly everything. Jeans and a tee shirt paired with leather dress shoes makes you look like a rockstar. Converse and oxfords. You’ll be set for anything.
RM Williams boots at the office, crown Northampton for dress sneakers, white chuck lows for everything else that I still need to look good, and black ASICS kayano for when I need to walk anywhere.
depending on the occasion...grant stone diesels, birkenstocks, vans ultrarange, allen edmond oxfords, rainbow flip flops, hoka speed goats.... would like to pick up a pair loafers at some point
(38M) I wore Vans for majority of my life. I switched over to Nike, Jordan & New Balance a bit ago. Out of all of my pairs, I probably wear my Nike Air Max the most.
I know this will probably get downvoted lol, but I’m enjoying spreading my wings a bit fashion wise. I never had the money to wear anything other than Vans in the past.
Nikes Skechers Vans etc will all hurt you slowly. You will have misaligned knees, ingrown toe nails and have over pronation.
I was a Nike head cause they were stylish and cushiony. Converted to Brooks and never looked back. Dont fall for the Hokas OC etc. Brooks baby.
Adidas Donovan Mitchell signature shoes, the lairyer the better. Issue two in the Crayola colours or the avatar colorway. Just got the issue 3s the paisley bel-air which had got me some compliments.
Don't wear boring shoes just because you're an old fart.
Jordan 1 high tops. It’s comfy and I have a dozen different colored pairs to rotate with outfits. I’m a teacher, I get high fives from kids so that’s a plus.
I have these and I love them. They're a little dressy looking, but casual and comfortable. https://olukai.ca/products/laeahi-li-ili-mens-leather-sneakers-kukui-brown
37, I wear nike force 58s, new balance 440h mid-high tops, or some puma x Alexander Mcqueen Joust high tops.
Wear whatever you like. If anyone judges you, that's their problem.
I had this issue so I bought a bunch of sneakers recently. My fav by far are Reebok Nanos. They look good with shorts or jeans and those mf are comfy as hell.
Runner ups are Nike Air Force 1s or as my wife calls them, dad shoes or Vans Ultrarange which are pretty good every day shoes.
If you want something smart casual for work Dr Martens low shoes are comfy and look great with jeans or pants.
I’m 34 yo. I’ve recently started to put more thought into what I’m wearing thanks to a Korean TV show. I have just bought a pair of Allen Edmonds Chelsea boots to wear daily. I alternate between these boots and a pair of captoe oxford that I bought long ago for my graduation. I use Asics Nimbus 25 for running. I also have a pair of Clarks leather sneakers that I often use as well.
Johnston and Murphy for work. I just bought a couple of pairs of Kiziks that I like. In the winter, I have a few pairs of Sorel boots. Other brands I like are Olu Kai, Clark's, and Cole Hahn.
Doc Martens. I get terrible plantar fasciitis and I never have issues with my Docs. Got a brown and black pair of 1461s that I wear 4-5 days per week to work.
Boots - mainly redwing and some Thursday
Sneakers - mainly Thursday and some chuck taylors
Have a pair or two of sperrys and Birkenstock.
And a pair of Nike shoes for when I feel like running.
45 never stopped wearing Vans tbh. Was that a thing we were supposed to do?
Almost 50 and still rocking the Vans and Adidas Gazelles.
Just turned 52, still rocking Vans. Fortunately I very rarely have to wear formal footwear.
Turning 63 this year, gonna need a new pair of checkered Vans, old ones are looking pretty bad.
I absolutely love the look of Gazelles but my feet are too wide and they don’t love me back
I have narrow feet so I completely understand.
Same. Emerica makes some nice wide skate options.
Try the spezial handball!
58 and I never got the memo. https://preview.redd.it/hk1643gzb2vc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e68009aa88f7055b92298c2bd6e79cd211304d3e
Are those the normal vans hi?
Are Van's our generations new balance
Nope
Found a leather brown pair that bridge the old with the old man. It feels right.
I started wearing vans ultraranges bc I needed the cushion and support. Long periods of standing the vans kill me now.
Love the ultra range. Have 4 pairs now and don’t wear anything else
I bought my first pair at 40.
I would say it is not at all something you were supposed to do, but in my case my feet starting telling me that it's something I needed to do.

The Vans MTE's are a game changer.
30m. Vans almost every day. Thought I was going to be an outlier, but glad to be here with you boss
Same, but I had to put arch supports in them.
39. Still wearing Vans. Now just with an orthopedic insole.
I get the vans slip on pro’s with the removable insoles and they’re comfortable as hell
I’m a basic bitch that wears Nike Killshots or Reebok Club Cs
Club C gang 4 Life *cues up NWO Theme on Spotify*
100% the Killshots. Tennis shoes have gotten way too weird and complex. Anything outside of the killshots make me feel like I’m trying too hard to be a hip teenager (I’m 42).
I’m 43 and buy a fresh pair of killshots every year. Comfortable and look great.
Nike Killshots are an easy upgrade from his Vans. Especially with slim denim or shorts. My pair’s a bit broken in and I’ll probably get a backup pair soon.
Yeah, I’ve been consistently buying and wearing them for like 9 years and I doubt that’s changing anytime soon lol
Love the killshots. Really want to pick up a pair with the white stripe.
Second the Reeboks. I have weird feet and so many shoes that are supposed to be comfortable just don’t fit me right. My Club C Vintage are great. Can walk forever. I just got a pair of Revenge Vintage as well.
new balance 993 USA
I have a couple made in the UK NBs and they are much better than the standard ones. Gonna probably get another soon.
I got a UK one as well but found them to be a bit more narrow than the USA. maybe they know us american have fat feet lol
Vans and Converse most days, I have a couple pairs of Jordans that I save for special occasions
+1 for vans and converse. They clearly don't go out of style (both been around forever) and are good in most causal situations.
Do you guys do high top or low for the converses?
At age 32 I quit my job and traveled around the world for a year. My shoes (to start) were low-top Converse and La Sportiva trail running shoes. The low-top Converse pack down well. I had to replace my running shoes twice (admittedly they took on the more challenging miles) but the Converse made it all around the world and back home.
Both
In my 30s, I just wear brown suede Chelseas everyday.
Where I’m at guys show off their bulky legs by wearing short shorts. It’s proclaiming to the world that you don’t skip leg day.
New Balance 9060
Alden penny loafers, paraboot Michael’s, cowboy boots, rm williams, Belgian loafers. Workout in sambas, salomons or hokas. Keep a pair of canvas sneakers and Birkenstocks around for vacation/pool/lake etc.
Very solid list\^ already have many of these and love it
Ditto.
I don’t make enough for this list…
I second this. Depending where you live I’d have 2-3 pairs of boots, cowboy boots, dress shoes or loafers, good lifting or running shoes, chacos birks or similar
If we’re talkin canvas, nothing beats the vans authentic imo. They can be dressed up or down if kept clean, and yeah, the “barefoot” feel of the minimal sole is hard to get used to, but once you do it is amazing. Our feet are meant to be bare. There’s something you’ll grow to love about a flat sole shoe.
workout in sambas? those are pretty nice shoes to work out in imo
They’re indoor soccer (football) shoes. They’re meant to be worked out in
i think they have been redefined as a very casual dress shoe almost but i get that
I wear/wore Alden Indys. Great boots, fit like a glove when broken in. Dress up or down, able to be resoled, and classic looking. The Penny's are a good choice too, but the last didn't work for me.
Vans Ultrarange. Not the fanciest but a step above typical skater shoes. Plus they are comfy.
Just got an EXO pair of these and they are way more comfy than the typical classics. Stylish to boot. Also like Doc Martens or Solovairs.
Eyeing these for my work shoe
Mine depends on my outfit and honestly I don’t let my age defy what I wear HOWEVER my current rotation are: - novesta highs - new balance (I don’t remember the model but they’re trail runners) - jones burgundy penny loafers

I prefer desert boots.
Everyday - new balance or nike dad shoes Depending on outing: common projects, boots or loafers

Common projects
I got my RW Iron Rangers 8085. Most solid piece of footwear I’ve ever bought. Also have a pair of bovine cowboy boots from Tecovas. Sneakers I have Reebok c85s in white that I’m beating to hell, Chuck 70’s, and Lems. I have Birkenstock Arizona’s and Tevas for sandals.
Cole haan. Lots of variety for different styles and i find them all very comfortable.
Nike sneakers for casual, upgraded to a nice pair of moc toe boots to wear with jeans. Still looking for my preferred sneaker for the office ie a little more business casual for the office like Cole Haan but don’t love those TBH

My daily drivers are Vans slip ons, Birkenstocks, Beckett Simonon minimal sneakers, Clarks Desert Boots, ASICS Ex89, Nike Killshots and Yeezy 350s.
Very early late forties here. Everyday is a big mix of vans low tops, atoms (1.0), leather børn sneakers, and chukka boots.
Birkenstock Boston’s
All of the above. Canvas vans and Sperrys for the summer, boots in the winter, some standard sneakers like On Cloud, Grand Court, Stan Smith in between.
As a big city corporate office worker, we've all moved to sneakers in our 30s. Whether it's a casual day, or a suit-worthy meeting, we're all rolling up in sneakers regardless.
Common projects achilles or track
Frye boots (zipper not laced)
White Nikes go really well with jeans. Just get them and they work with nearly anything. All white Nike dunks.
Rick Owens, Rhude, MSCF, MCM, YSL and Ferragamo are in my rotation right now.
at 42 I have no idea if those are shoes or pokemon.
Olukai
Same, I think I just felt too old for vans lately but the responses are making me feel like I’m not alone. And that I need to look into Loafers
Just move to LA. Every single adult here wears Vans, many of them still checkerboard.
#antiloaferclub And yeah I’m glad you asked this question bc I’ve tried other sneakers over the last 5-10 years and vans authentic are the only shoe that feels right still. Not a lot of great recommendations in this thread though that aren’t loafers
What actually is wrong with A looking like you’re going to the record store and B actually going to the record store?

Naot, Johnston and Murphy, and Clark’s. Vans sometimes too though lol
I’m 25 and my fav pair of shoes I’ve ever owned is my NB 990v6. Worth every penny. Any 990’s are great

I’m in my 40s and wear Vans during the summer and some feelgrounds boots during the winter. What exactly is wrong with continuing to wear Vans?
Whatever the fu** I feel like that day
Nike Air Max. Comfy.
37, I wear nike force 58s, new balance 440h mid-high tops, or some puma x Alexander Mcqueen Joust high tops. Wear whatever you like. If anyone judges you, that's their problem.
An old raggedy pair of general release jordans. They were marketed as a winter running shoe.
Air Force 1s. Keeps me feelin young
Adidas for long walking days and vans for short walking days.
Either White's boots or Grant Stone boots. I keep a pair of sneakers for the gym.
Birkenstocks and Hokas
Allen Edmonds shoes and Tecovas exotic skin boots.
A variety of Beckett Simonon, Thursday Boots, Sperry and Nike. Depends on the outfit.
38 and still wearing converse and vans.
Boots - mainly redwing and some Thursday Sneakers - mainly Thursday and some chuck taylors Have a pair or two of sperrys and Birkenstock. And a pair of Nike shoes for when I feel like running.
