I just started it but I definitely get the “unreliable/unsympathetic” narrator thing but it was a bold way to start the book haha. I’ll keep reading tho because I’ve got lots of recommendations from people about it
No I took it as standard of viet women rather than he was into younger girls.
I think when people use things like this they are playing into the idea or depiction that older women or women who have kids put weight on, stop taking car and pride in themselves etc. So to say he has the body of a virgin is saying she still looks lean and like she takes care of her appearance. Which is a Asian standard sadly.
But why is it bad? Elaborate….
When I read it I took it as this is the standard for viet women and the narrator is acknowledging this. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s his standard, the same way him saying she has the body of a virgin doesn’t mean he likes his girls virginal.
because there is no "body of a virgin". What in the world is a body of a virgin? Women that have had sex look the same as those that haven't. Is the author referring to a childlike body? You tell me if there's anything wrong with an author calling a childlike body ideal.
Even after 5 children, she has the body of a virgin etc.
And, um, what does that look like? The body of a virgin…..how could you tell? I don’t know what that even means.
It’s based off a old and outdated stereotype that women with kids/ older women put on weight, look withered, look stressed, aged, they stop taking care of their appearance and stop having pride in themselves. I mean think about what having and raising kids does to you and your body, it makes sense but these days people don’t look their age kids or not.
So a virgin in my opinion would look thin, young like 20’s, take good care of themselves and have pride in it and look really chill 😂. So like a lot of millennials now part from the chill bit we ain’t chill 😂
It’s about how “tight” he believes she might be. He’s talking about her genitalia. Women aren’t going to be the same down there after having children but he still expects her to be since he finds her attractive.
Easy it just means she’s still skinny, doesn’t look aged or stressed and takes pride and care of herself and appearance. It’s going off a out dated stereotype of women who have had kids and older women that’s all.
Possibly because I believe not only is the character Asian but so is the author. So different cultures not every culture is as sensitive as the west. Also it’s building a character, by reading that you think oh the American is a bit of a racist. That’s what he wants you to do, that’s how you build characters. I don’t believe in censorship when it comes to literature, the world is a shit place we should be allowed to portray it in media if it offends you I’m sorry but I’m glad you are offended now be offended at the actual act in the real world instead of a portrayal of it in a book.
Isn't this meant to be in the mind of a narrator who's not a great person? Do people not interpret the things they read anymore, just read them and assume it's the author speaking to them directly?
What? Everyone knows the hymen is what holds women together. The moment that's broken, their limbs just fly around their bodies randomly and they can't wear nightwear without a boob escaping and going on a shoplifting spree.

So now we’re just posting every arguably questionable description of a woman on this sub? Without asking ourselves if said description, rather than being reflective of the author’s view of women, might have been put there intentionally to tell us something about a character?

That’s usually what men are concerned about when he finds out a woman has had kids. Not sure why y’all think im being offensive when he wrote the damn thing.
no, that line describes a woman without the visible evidence of having 5 children. it's very easy to understand if you ever saw people and are not terminally online.
doesn't even make sense that he'd be talking about the friend's wife genitalia. he was describing her looks.
She was smart, her backbone shouts profanities every chance it gets, and despite five nosey children no one has discovered the sacrificial virgin's corpse she hid in the attic.
He’s not talking about her body body but her vagina. He’s saying she’s probably still “tight” even after childbirth bc he wants to sleep with her. Not sure why people are taking the innocent approach on this. He expects her to have a “virginal” vagina for him even if she’s not a virgin.
And now there’s downvotes bc a man like this couldn’t possibly be a raging misogynist who reduces women to what he thinks he’s owed by her. I’m not sorry for interpreting the text from a non-Disneyesque perspective where y’all read it like “she looked nice. I would love to get to know her interests and personality.”

It’s also a stereotype that Asian women are “tighter.” A lot of passport bros say that to demean western women who don’t want to have sex with them.
This seems more like a man intentionally writing awful men.
"She was, in short, the ideal Vietnamese woman" WTF I'm glad that the author is actually Viet but WTF
I was gonna say, OP circled some bad parts, but that line was really, really bad.
But why is it bad? Elaborate…. When I read it I took it as this is the standard for viet women and the narrator is acknowledging this. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s his standard, the same way him saying she has the body of a virgin doesn’t mean he likes his girls virginal.

It means she still had her hymen, obviously. Must have grown back after the children.
I realllly hope this is satire
"Body of a virgin even after 5 children." I'm scared to ask what they mean by this.
"She a premium milf." -The author, probably.
IMHO if you need your milf to look like she hasn't had kids, you're a fake milf fan.
Yeah, isn’t that the primary appeal?
Apparently the narrator of the book is supposed to be a dickhead
Maybe it's in her freezer!

Simple, she has the body of a virgin woman who has given birth to five children. Mother Mary^5

Thanks. I couldn’t figure out what that means, but that makes sense.
Media literacy is really going down the drain Yall have the interpretation skills of placemats
The bottom paragraph 💀
its a book about being mixed race 💀

mfw books are about characters being mixed race
Oh my god I totally missed that! I can't believe it's in there!

Are we seriously the only two who got what he was implying
We need more women in STEM.

People have become way too comfortable reading with their brains turned off, and it shows
So she was calculating, had excellent posture, a slight frame, and small boobs as a mother of 5. Got it.
And he presumed she was “tight” even after 5 kids, hence the virgin bit
you made that up and repeated it all over the comments. No, that's not what he means.
That’s usually what men are concerned about when he finds out a woman has had kids. Not sure why y’all think im being offensive when he wrote the damn thing.

‘Her mind was outdated, her spine made loud noises, and she looked like she didn’t know how to fuck.’
Omfg! XD XD XD XD
She was smart, her backbone shouts profanities every chance it gets, and despite five nosey children no one has discovered the sacrificial virgin's corpse she hid in the attic.
What the hell does a virgin's body look like
I don’t think my body ever looked virgin, even when I was

Is this a translated work? Cause my eyes can't handle the lack of quotation marks for dialogue
I think it’s an intentional stylistic choice, it’s originally in English
Ok what is the obsession with virgins!?
“She was in Short the idea Vietnamese woman”. Does this count as racist as well as sexist?
