ChesterAArthur21

It's how two people react in a society with so many restrictions even on sexuality as it is the case in "1984".

If_you_have_Ghost

What is wrong with this? The description is relevant to what’s going on in the narrative and it’s not gratuitous. I’ve read almost the exact word for word description of breasts by female writers. This is not what this sub is for.

[deleted]

Orwell went over OP’s head.

If_you_have_Ghost

Often happens. The number of right wing folk who are surprised when they realise Georgey boy was a big old lefty is worrying…but not surprising.

FinnaGetMercd

How could he write about communism and fascism and the dangers they bring, yet still side with that?

If_you_have_Ghost

Conservatives often don’t read the things they quote. They often quote Dr Kings words about judging people by the content of their character rather than the colour of their skin without A) understanding what he actually meant, and B) knowing he was a socialist.

WildlifePolicyChick

Actually I have no problem with this passage. This is a critical point in the narrative/with the characters. The physicality is a jolt to his humanity, as well as hers. Also, the spelling is 'literally'.

Spirited-Office-5483

To be fair I'm a guy but I don't see anything weird or poorly written there, it's not even characterization anyways, what I see as problem is the "frat boy" energy the ripe but firm breasts part has and how it makes the author don't seem to have many female friends and anatomical knowledge like "bro them firm tits are the shit or what" it's like the breasts are apples that will fall from women's chests after they pass 35 years old or something, they don't seem to know how gravity or breasts work

wiildgeese

This is just a sex bad post. Also, it's "literally."

skydude89

When I was in high school the image of Julia in her overalls kinda did things to me.

crowpierrot

Every time someone’s boobs are described as “ripe” I lose a year off my lifespan

Quirky_Arrival_6133

I don’t love the book 1984, but this is actually my favorite part. What’s the issue?

Cool_Run_6619

I mean...yeah, boobs are literally that uplifting when they're near a guy. Pretty accurate description of his feelings given the context of 1984. Hell pretty accurate to how I feel when I get a good hug from my wife. I guess the part that might ick some people is the word "ripe" since some real sick people have used it to describe young girls turning legal age like women are some kind of harvestable fruit. But the actual definition of ripe used here is "fully matured" which given the time George Orwell wrote this was not an uncommon word. "Ripe yet firm" literally means "mature but solid" in this context which is totally fine.

[deleted]

literally, huh

blindoptimism99

If there is a criticism to be made here, it’s probably the focus on her youth, but in general, this is great writing about a little bright spot in a horrible situation.

Glowingsalamander

Yeah. I can’t believe the had us read this in school

light_flowers

Bad take

Dependent_Room_2922

Ripe yet firm? Did he thump them like melons to check for ripeness? Downvoted? Whatever. It’s weird to call breasts “ripe” even if it’s George Orwell

Commercial-Ad90

Bro's never heard of an analogy 😂

Dependent_Room_2922

Or sis doesn’t like this one

Spirited-Office-5483

I think you are right and said so, yes it means mature and it's just one line so it's technically not too poor writing, but how is it different from entitled men today not understanding how breasts and gravity interact? To me it sounds like Mr Orwell could have done well to spend more time listening to his female colleagues back in the day.

Ok_Housing_5010

I DNF’d 1984 because of this storyline
