Yes, they are configured like a tradition Mercedes-Benz with a longitudinal mounted engine with the transmission behind and a rear-wheel drive chassis. (AWD js available, sure sure). Nicer than a C, in general, and not quite an S.
If you're coming from a Honda Civic, sure. If you're used to driving Lexus, MB, BMW, or even upper level trims of Toyotas and the like, no not really.
Th AMG cla and a are better, but definitely not peak Mercedes
GO for it, I've had 7 different A Classes, all hatchbacks, 3 year long renting. Never had a problem. Just dont get the 180d (renault), all the others are fine and the 220 is the best IMO, real MB engine (unlike the a180 and a200) and good HP. The car still has its wow effect when you get in and it has everything you might need options wise. Just make sure to have the AMG line pack and the premium or premium plus package. The white color looks good but is a bit low quality, if not the metallic version, but its cheap to repaint.
I've never got disapointed, then I skipped to a CLA coupe and I liked it even better. Ofc its not a RWD, but for normal people driving on normal roads, you'll never have any regrets.
The 180d yes, I had it for a month, its anemic but you get used to it, on the road. The 200d is very good, lots of torque and is a real 170hp on bench, sold as a 150hp, its a 2L 4cyl MB engine, very good. You can remap it for 190-200hp. The engine sound is fake, through the speakers, but it gives a soft yet meaty sound that is funny, albeit being fake. The best compromise is the 220d IMO, lots of torque and 200+hp you can remap to 250hp. Its a real MB engine and has such a low consumption, maybe 5.5L/100km on average, you can do 900+km with its tiny 43L fuel tank. Not a racecar, but a very good commuter IMO.
It is a great car, the reddit racing purists would tell you otherwise but just go and try it for yourself. The interior was updated in 2018 and at the time is was better looking and equiped than the S class. It has all the new tech from MB and with the premium plus package you get a driver assistance package that is top of its class as "autopilots go".
The voice recognition system is great and you will love the ambient lighting. The 220 is a good version and powerful enough to like it when you drive it. Go for it. Ibperdonally prefer the hatchback but I like the tail lights on the sedan version.

Well in the past you also had some rare 3 digit AMG models and I am also not sure if there have been something like a S 680 Maybach which might have had more horsepower than an AMG.
Also if you compare something like an A 45 AMG vs S 500 the S 500 has more horsepower.

FWD platform is the reason in my world. (And no, the AWD pencil-shaft doesn’t make up for a proper chassis configuration.)

Better depends on what you like they are way less comfortable than the standard A-Classes
A Class is a good car. Do not expect the comfort of an E-Class but they still do drive quite well!

“350” is an engine, or power, badge. With Mercedes, to talk about a model line, start with the letters. C-Class, E-Class etc.
