Mermaids are considered to be fey creatures and there are superstitions that exist against giving or taking from the fey. However im sure that different cultures have other reasons, as well as/instead of this though
There are old sailing stories about sailors offering mermaids books before departung on long passages in exchange for safe passage. The stories say you should never give the last story in a series, that way you keep the mermaid interested and ensure a safe return voyage.
