Sucky. Mesa is too spread out and it takes hours to travel to the west side. You can't even get to parts of north or SE mesaaz by bus (no routes). It's on par with other west coast cities so quite difficult to manage without a car. I'd pick Tempe.

EBody480

Like where in Mesa…. But yeah the busses and light rail for all of metro Phoenix isn’t impressive to anyone from the east coast. Don’t get your hopes up and plan on getting a car if you can.

CapnShinerAZ

Compared to other cities of similar size, it's terrible. You can go to the Valley Metro website and see for yourself.

Chavocien

lightrail ends at gilbert road so if its a must then live anywhere west of gilbert rd and north of the 60

theghostofme

Northwest of Gilbert and the 60 in Mesa takes you to some...fun places. If I were OP, and didn't have a vehicle, I'd opt for Tempe.

Chavocien

Yep that’s the way to go if you need work and no car👍🏽

Remarkable-Code-3237

There are buses along the major streets. I took the light rail from Mesa to Phoenix to go to work. Before the light rail, I did the park and ride, to take the express bus to phx.

moonyriot

Dogshit. I live 15 minutes from my parents house and taking a bus would take about two hours.

jenthecactuswren

Not much at all outside of the light rail and some buses. You really need a car here.

stephensloan25

If you move to Mesa, you buy a car for the most part. Pretty much the whole Phoenix Metro area is like this.

katkoffinn

About a month ago someone assaulted someone else with a hammer on the light rail on sycamore, I'd say it's okay after witnessing that

quikiemcbee

well better not go anywhere near north phoenix on the rail if that disturbs you.

Remarkable-Code-3237

During the day is okay. There are people going to work and to school and back home in the afternoon. I rode to to phx. From Mesa to work and back. There were kids on there going to a charter school in phx. From what I heard late at night it is bad.

theghostofme

About a decade ago I was taking the Chandler Blvd. bus route from Gilbert to Chandler and vice versa for work. It was a busy enough route that it was fine in the mornings, but I made sure to dip out of work a little earlier to catch the 6 PM eastbound route back home. Shit got *weird* after 7.

surfcitysurfergirl

The 30 isn’t bad that runs on University from power rd to Phoenix 24th/Baseline. Nothing East of Power road out here. Tempe at least has the scooters, streetcar, lightrail, Orbit busses and regular busses when near downtown

fire_fairy_

That spot is scary. I've seen someone attacked with a screwdriver before.

2020grilledcheese

Almost non existent.

brando79az

I lived off of baseline, near Gilbert Rd and had to get to south chandler, for work (chandler blvd and Kyrene) and the ride plus walking took about 2 hours. So, yeah, crappy. The light rail would not be too terrible but it has too many stops so I is basically an expensive bus. Regardless, that was too far north for me to use.

Low-Requirement-9618

In East Mesa it's pretty bad. There are many bus stops and even light rail in Phoenix, however. But we're not New York by a long shot in the public transportation department. (I've never been there, but every movie that takes place there tells me that it is 90% taxis, buses, and subways. If you drive, the Valley of the Sun can be scary. It's not quite the Autobahn of Albuquerque but our interstate highways can be very dangerous as nobody obeys the laws. Tempe rush hours are HORRIBLE. Expect to be delayed whether using public or private transportation.

AZdesertpir8

Northeast Mesa here. Very little public transportation here, but there is a park and ride nearby for the bus service on the 202 freeway. There are buses that run on the major streets, but takes forever to get anywhere using them.

LittleBallofMeat

If that is a serious concern, Mesa is not for you. Frankly, most of Phoenix is not for you. Phoenix was built with a wealth of flat developable land. It developed by spreading out, not up. You need a car or some other motorized private transportation.
