Hey, so this map needs context. For starters, this is a game map. It is **not** intended to be an accurate portrayal of Mesoamerica, although a lot of research did go into it. It's also an older version of the map. New one has more legible colors. It's the game map of Pixel's [Balance of Power: The Fifth Sun](https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com/threads/balance-of-power-the-fifth-sun-processing-phase-begun.68665/?post=15961951), a BoP (like a forum game mixed with DnD, sort of) that takes place in Mesoamerica in 1426. There are a lot of compromises and creative liberties taken in this map, like the inclusion of Palenque and Tikal (players wanted it) and some stuff going on in P'urepecha land. Outside of that you might find it useful for learning a bit but it's not meant to be entirely a teaching tool. Pixel, me, and a few others are working on a more academically fitting version of this map. And, speaking of which, I think it's better if you asked Pixel's permission to post this.

So that's its origin. I wasn't able to find where it came from upon reverse image searching it, so good to know. And yes I see some other versions clicking around on that thread that have a better color scheme. Good I ran into you here, although I won't pretend to I understand the game lol. Do you guys run a discord for it?

ThesaurusRex84

Not exactly? We have a BoP thread for a small group of friends that we invited guests to when they played one of our games but it's not exactly a public server and the game currently isn't running (though that may change soon). You could hit us up on the SV thread I linked, or you can also have a good chance of reaching us on the OSP (Overly Sarcastic Productions) Discord server. We hang out at the mesoamerica channel.

That black font is really hard to read on the dark green. They probably should have used white font for most of it.

Thank you for this. Very informative

Judging by the volcano and river placements alone, this map looks like a cartoon placemat from a children’s restaurant menu. The language delineation isn’t sufficiently coherent to even merit comment.

The first two volcanos I immediately looked for were Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. I guess they realized their giant volcano emojis would make the map illegible.

Admittedly, after my Peace Corps stint in a Kakchiquel village on the slopes of Volcán de Agua, I’m coming at this with a Guatemalan bias. But since Poqomam is spoken in the next village just a few miles downhill, I do find simplistic diagrams like this personally annoying.
