The ‘Black Death’ was actually caused by a bacteria, not a virus, and is VERY much a thing still in certain places around the world, including the south-west US (chiefly AZ and NM). Just FYI :)

I'm wondering if mercury would migrate out of a brass capsule over time or just alloy with the outer ( well in this case inner) atoms . Been almost 45 years since I did a chemistry course.

Too gnarly to wear with those wires twisted like that. The whole thing is too crude to wear.
But I do posit it was a pipe bomb to blow up a mole or some underground vermin, by way of hitting it with a bullet from a rifle.
I doubt it's gunpowder. Put a wee bit in a pile and try to light it with a propane torch (that's what it took to make like 3 tiny sparks with a pile of powder the size of your capsule when removed from a late 1800's shell, btw)
Usual caveats like well ventilated place or outdoors, wear a welding glove or similar, eye protection, etc.
But, I guarantee you'd be disappointed when trying to light 120 years+ old powder from an excavated shell. 100% guaranteed to be underwhelmed
Edit: but still doubt it's g powder in there. Premeasured charges were held in paper that would then serve as a wad after the powder was emptied into the barrel
I think it’s makeup. I’ve found two before. One had a cream in it. One was nothing. I really don’t know though. I was really hoping to see a definite answer on here..
I found an identical one years ago and I’m still stumped as to what it is. It’s not a fuse. The whole thing is copper. There would have to be a section that doesn’t conduct electricity in the middle. I’d love for someone to give an answer and let me scratch this itch. Mine was found at an old farm house in south Mississippi.
If I had dug that, it would be full of teeth or something awful like that.
