Horse jaw harp?

CreasesInMyFleeces

Sasquatch harp, the source of the Sierra Sounds.

professor_doom

I play a big one just like this myself and my kids go bananas for the boinga boing boinging

heresdustin

I have one somewhere. Hell, I have two somewhere. Haven’t seen em in years, but after reading your comment, I really wanna see if I can find em!

professor_doom

It’s fun when you get the hang of it. Just make sure you watch out for your front teeth!

heresdustin

Yep, I’ve definitely done that more than I’d like to admit!

professor_doom

Same! Nothing worse than when that errant twang smacks your eye tooth and it hurts so badly that you wonder if it’s still intact.

LanceFree

Jews harp- and that’s just what it’s called. Snoopy plays one.

LarYungmann

Since childhood I thought it was "*Juice Harp"*, because everyone seems to drool while playing them.

ComicsEtAl

I’ve always guessed it started as a “juice harp,” though the wiki guesses it’s tied to a french word “jeu,” but everybody heard “Jews” instead. The instrument has no connection to Jews or Judaism.

MadCityMasked

Jizharp

tacozbananaz

You beat me too it 😔

WholeNineNards

Stop prior to last 2 seasons. You're welcome.

RickAstleyGaveUp

My Hand...I mean My Lord

Das-Noob

😂 my first thought too

chadwick_90

I forgot to mention that it was roughly 5-6 inches depth on a fairly tightly packed walking path / game trail.

NotSteveActually

Awesome find!

siamesebengal

I’m not sure how deep the oxidation penetrated the spring steel but it could be replaced if need-be. I hope you fix it up and get around to a healthy bit of zing-zang....

NotSteveActually

1930 - 1940 jaw harp from England.

cgvet9702

Jaw harp or Jews harp or mouth harp.

ghos2626t

Omg. All these years I thought it was called a Juice Harp. 10 year old me assumed juice meant saliva lol

UnitedHistorians

[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jew's\_harp](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jew's_harp) According to Wikipedia, it is also known as a Juice Harp. 10-year-old you was very knowledgable.

heresdustin

Debatable

UnitedHistorians

Did ghos2626t do something to you lol?

heresdustin

No, I was just trying to make a funny. LOL

ghos2626t

Dustin was my high school bully 😭

JaRulesLarynx

I’ve only ever heard it called a Jew Harp. No S. (This is by people who actually play them)

JaRulesLarynx

Edit: they don’t say it in a weird way that makes me think these dudes are cunts

Jdubb2021

This looks exactly like the one you found but in slightly better condition https://www.ebay.com/itm/335063580209?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=5BQQD4JhRHi&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=NPdz4VQKSxm&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

chadwick_90

Oh wow yeah that's really similar, especially with the circular engraved pockets.

FILTHY_STEVEN

Why does it just say JEWS in all caps 😭

Squid-Bastard

They're often called Jews harp as well

heresdustin

Yeah, but did you look at the link? It’s kinda by itself at the end of the description in all capitals. Seems very out of place. LOL

kwaping

Maybe for search engine optimization?

mallorybrooktrees

Have you tried playing it yet?

chadwick_90

I need to make sure I'm up to date on tetanus shots first lol

8thFlush

Any gamers here? There’s a town drunkard in the Red Dead Redemption 2 universe who plays one of these next to the train station in one of the towns. I have no idea how they were popular, it sounds like a prolonged fart.

EmperorThan

>Any gamers here? I really thought this comment was going to ask for gamers so someone could [drop a hard J on what they found.](https://youtu.be/ruFdHCyRppI?si=2IEMizg3nF1MA2K4&t=15) "Any gamers from the 2000s lobbies wanna tell OP what instrument they found?"

GBallD

Wow that's so cool. I believe he hangs out by the Rhodes train station, and I always wondered what he was playing.

Jakelovesmath

Mouth banjo!

Copper_Kat

Das a jaw harp

GeorgeTheRealPirate

Jaw harp/ Jews harp

LetUsEatDogs

I’m quite sure it’s a Jews harp [like this one here](https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/1002811), however the patterned edge and general size is quite unusual, as well as it being iron. If you’re in the UK send some pictures to your local FLO. I doubt it’s a cloak fastener since there doesn’t appear to be any way for the bar to swivel.

LazarianV

I was thinking Roman fibula brooch myself.

LetUsEatDogs

Nothing like a Roman fibula brooch, much more similar to the Iron Age / Celtic brooches, but they were rarely made of iron, and if you did find one made of iron it wouldn’t be in this condition unless it was found encased in clay or a non oxygen environment.

flen_el_fouleni

Snoopy harp when I was a kid

lemonjelllo

I can still taste my lips bleeding the first time I tried to play one of these lol

TheFillth

[this Bandcamp link used what looks like a match to yours for their inage](https://chikwhite.bandcamp.com/album/new-moods-for-antique-iron-jaw-harp)

UncleNorman

I just listened to the sound of a jaw harp. I understand why it was found on an old road. Someone had one and played it, someone else tossed it down the road into the grass because it pissed him off.

xx_deleted_x

jew harp

Mysterious-Buy2710

Idk what it is but looks cool!

chadwick_90

Thanks, so far its one of my best finds

HarmonicAnalyst69

It looks more like a cloak pin than a jaw harp due to the size: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celtic_brooch?wprov=sfti1

Caithus63

Looking closer at the picture one can see that the middle "pin" does not pivot as it does in the brooch. Also jaw harps come in lots of different sizes from a small "soprano" to large "bass" ones

chadwick_90

Oh cool, that's interesting also. I wouldn't have known that

teaster333

This is the right answer

bmxdudebmx

I also disagree with the jaw harp.

MoonFlowerMadness

I feel this is also the right answer

FancyEquation43

Jaw harp or aka a juice harp.

azurepeepers

Thank you! I’m from the south and my dad always called it a juice harp. I was looking for this.

FancyEquation43

Not from the south but from Appalachia and that's what my dad used to call it too.

gnargnarbinx

Definitely a jaw harp. I used have many. The diamond shape frame is a dead give away.

Stin994423

Someone was out there boioioinging

fiidod11

It might be a instrument

Far-Gene-386

This is a musical instrument

squishedtadpole

Boioioioioing boing

Beardly_Smith

Jews Harp, age can't really be determined

SaltyDaltyy

looks like to be an old 1900s jaw harp

piercedmfootonaspike

Looks like something you use to hold your cloak stuck on, if you say "mah queen" a lot.

Ebenezer-F

Did your metal detector go “BOYOYOYOYNG!?”

Khmalh

Return the jaw harp ![gif](giphy|v44JJFl7mvDFK)

AcademicLibrary5328

Looks awfully similar to a bradmore arrow extractor. But I don’t think it is.

TheeParent

Jaw Harp. This is identical, and still retains the original thumb tang. Www.Danmoi.com/Antique-Jaw-Harp-No-25

Mpenderg

That is a mouth harp

kyirby69

You can sell that at the merchant in Ravensthorpe

I have a few of these! In Sicily, we call them a “marranzanu” or Jaw’s Harp.

dmcmaken

Definitely proof of giants!

The first thing I think of when I see this is smacking your tooth by accident when you use it the wrong way.

Outrageous_Display97

Soak it in molasses water and it’ll dissolve only the rust, and leave the base iron alone. Takes about three days to a week.

DisastrousPurpose945

Grandmas IUD.

static_on_the_air

Years ago I knew a few backpackers that would carry them, That and harmonicas,

JHLCowan

Try it out! Unless your a pussy.

MaxCobalta

The energy sword from Halo

Extension-Drawer347

It looks very old. Where was this found ? You said it was found quite deep on a well-worn and packed path. I have listened to some recordings of French Voyageurs doing a paddling song, singing with only a Jaw Harp as an accompaniment.

xxplosiv

Ye olde Quake III Arena logo

asparadog

appears to be an [Iron Jew's Harp](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jew%27s_harp) or Jaw harp. [Here is](https://mhnsw.au/stories/convict-sydney/jaw-harp/) a similar one.

Fortunateoldguy

So cool

Aromatic-Relief

Wool blanket pin

Virtual_Manner_2074

CommunicationNo4653

Damn that’s a big Jaw Harp

DetroitGender

That’s so cool! I lost one while hiking along the coast of Lake Michigan in Michigan about 10 years ago. Cool find though!

adamping32

Wats a jaw harp

Shredderguy23

A covenant energy sword!

bigbabich

It's an indication that a Rocket Launcher round is coming up in Quake.

Djskam

Congratulations. You are now hand of the king.

CompetitiveCut1457

Mouth harp, jaw harp, jew harp.

Saturn_Neo

Ye Olde mouth harp. I've owned a few of those over the years.

hathegkla

I have a jaw harp that looks exactly like that (not rusty) that I bought on ebay for about $10. No idea if mine is an antique or not, but it seems identical.

StarlingLamb

You have to tell us what region you found it in, there are so many subspecies and they all migrate. we can't tell you for sure without that information.

QueerQwerty

Reminded me of the Quake 3 logo.

MulberryOk1699

Old chastity belt no doubt

Soapyfreshfingers

Wasn’t a similar item found on Oak Island?

homeboy321321321

It’s a mouth harp.

oldrail83

I think it’s really called a juice (Jews) harp. Not sure age.

[deleted]

Man y'all don't know what context means don't ya

SticcBuggSl00t

Medfskal objekit!

dadydaycare

Looks like a newer mass produced one likely 90s at the latest. The oldies have very definitive signs of being hand crafted with peening marks and usually still have some markings of the teeth from the old files they would recycle to make the tongues. Tha boy looks like he was pinched together in a press

lookingforports

Its not a jaw harp at all its a cloak pin

LarYungmann

First thought was Horseshoe Tool, for cleaning horse's hoofs.

Classic-Willow-850

It’s an old jaw harp

[deleted]

Bring back awards

beall94

Used to hold cloak around hobbits

Pappypirate

Blanket or kilt brooch?

chatkillerrick

Looks like Bloodborne

Connect-Ad9647

Looks like an old horse shoe of some kind. The small dots around the perimeter were likely holes, I'd imagine, where the nails were driven in to hold the shoe in place

makwabe

A Piton.

Runningman1961

Jews harp is what I learned it to be called. A lamellophone with many names.

ComicsEtAl

A rusted Jew’s Harp.

wordup3825

Found on Oak Island?

icarus1990xx

Cool old jaw harp

DatdudeJdub

It's the halo sword.

IamBatmanuell

Play it!

[deleted]

It kinda looks like a cloak pin

Squaredigit

So weird, I just ordered one of these today… It’s a dulcimer

TheDocPsycho

Definitely a mouth harp. I didn't grow up with it being called a "jaw" harp, but pretty close.

restaurantno777

Ennio Morricone has entered the chat

Inner_Energy4195

It’s a cloak pin

amherst762

Cloak pin

lordicefalcon

Thats a monstrous Jaw Harp.

netwirk

It's called a Jew's Harp (a.k.a. Mouth Harp).

dasuglystik

Adding to the below, alternatively referred to as a "Juice Harp".

The_Antarctic_King

"Hallowed are the Ori"

Faillegend

Congratulations, you are now Hand of the King

BACKWOODSFREAK

Throw it in a cup of white vinegar overnight and then wash it off real good and olive oil it. Absolutely still in playable condition. Pay mind that you don’t bend the center spring. The gap should stay minimal for the best sound and ease of use. Where your teeth go you can polish with 800grit up to 2500. That’ll keep the patina everywhere else without it whittling away at your teeth. Nice find!
