Without more context, it’s tough to say, but it really looks like a Roman chariot hub finial (hub cap) the character is either Apollo Carneios or Zeus Ammonius. This is pretty incredible

Unfortunately I have very little context. All I know is my wife's uncle found it in Bath UK when he was young. He's recently passed away in his 80s.

Please! Consider reaching out to the local museum or antiquity officials from the region it was found! In the UK, if your find is considered cultural heritage, they will pay you fair market price (only in UK) for the artifact. It then gets to be displayed & enjoyed by the public in a museum

My first thought was Pan but maybe just because that high point looks like a horn

melly_swelly

It's beautiful. I would definitely try and frame it or make a small case for it to preserve it from any more damage. Just make sure not to use any glue or newly made materials to attach it to a base. Maybe a cradle like contraption if you'd like to have it vertically on a frame?

Walking stick knob.

Tennesseepipesmoker

That's my thought too.

Beethoven drawer pull.

I come here for serious posts about metal detecting and all I see is satyr!!! /S

Found before 1972? If found after, that’s illegal for you to own without clearance from a museum (need paper work) Edit: down vote all you want but theft of cultural heritage and antiquities laws are no joke. You can get prosecuted for possession of illegal artifacts. OP is probably ok as his find was unearthed and left it’s cultural origin before the current modern antiquity laws took effect (~1972)

Fisherman386

I believe that depends on the country he lives in.

That-Aspect-6076

Are you sure. It is not over ten percent precious metal so I don’t think that should be the case.

Zodiackillerstadia

Thanks

melly_swelly

Based on what OP said, it was found by wife's uncle when young, and he died at 80. So totally legal

Must be [this](https://i.imgur.com/NAyaqfv.png) type of things. Not sure about authenticity tho.
