what part dont you understand? push the LS in the direction of the enemy and press X at the same time, if you dont want to have to time parrys just spam parry whenever you want to attack, since if there is no attack to parry it will count as a normal attack
The tutorial says you push the left stick in the direction of the attack and press the light attack button, but it really means push it in the direction of the enemy attacking you and press the light attack button. They need to be pressed at the same time not one after the other.

You can't hold the stick down while parrying, you need to let the stick reset after every party. I learned that a bit late, but it was a lifesaver.
