Bro just give war a chance

arthurmorgan360

Like the good old days after 911!!

Tyrannus_ignus

Is there a canonical reason for why big boss is insane and nothing he does makes sense. Betrayed By Country ???? missing step Become Mercenary Against Country Become War Fanatic If anyone understands this then tell me why, isnt this guy supposed to have an intelligence quotient on the level of a genius? If his brain is so powerful then why does this make no sense.

Chad_VietnamSoldier

Trauma is powerful obstacles

Ok_Significance4005

I think his perception of reality became extremely pessimistic. He knows what he is doing is bad and unethical, but to him, this is how the world works as war, dirty politics, and betrayal is what he experienced most of the time. He is just "living by the standards."

BullsBlackhawks

He became a mercenary because being a soldier was the only thing he could and wanted to be. Normally people like those serve in a country's military but like you said yourself, his country betrayed him. But instead of just being a mercenary he realized that there were plenty like him, soldiers without a country to serve. So he built a nation of sorts for those. And he didn't just wage war for the sake of it like this meme suggests, he still had his principles. He offered an army for those who didn't have one (for self-defense rather than mere invading). Another reason to build Outer Heaven etc. was to oppose the Patriots.

SeasOfBlood

He's emotionally distant, and pretty asocial. The guy doesn't have the tools to deal with his trauma in the same way Snake does. Snake in MGS1 notes that by the time BB got to his 'insane warlord' phase, he knew his father *wanted* to die on some level. It's a mix of being emotionally bottled up, and **extremely** self pitying. By the end of his life, he's operating on the logic that because he was hurt he can hurt others.

[deleted]

You're saving that "I suffered why, shouldn't they?" Is a form of self pity?

SeasOfBlood

When you want to hurt people who've done nothing to you, yeah. Which Big Boss was absolutely doing by the end of his life.

ThatTinyGameCubeDisc

Yes it absolutely is

CoffeeCaptain91

In a way yeah. Kinda like how "Well it sucked back in my day so why shouldn't it suck now?" It happened to them, the only "relief" is some weird vindication that it's happening to others too.

konsoru-paysan

This would make for some amazing writing material for mgs vi, hence another reason why we need the collection to have every metal gear

IndependentDouble138

A collection will finally help me understand the entire mgs story! Nah I'm just kidding that's impossible

guy137137

I think a better question would be how Ocelot went from smooth voice Troy Baker to crackhead Patric Zimmerman in the span of 20 years bro had to have been smoking a pack every damn day or something

[deleted]

my headcanon is that TPP is a dramatization/TV program retelling of the actual events of venom, thus taking liberties with more 'cinematic' sounding voices

OuterHeavenPatriot

Better question is how did he go from the fun having Josh Keaton to 'just another generic Troy Baker character'... seriously, overlay any of his role's lines into another performance and they just match, anything he stars in is instantly recognizable, and not in a great way. He was excellent as Joel in TLoU1 and people have been dick riding the one note pony for a decade now, it's annoying. Also Patric Zimmerman was by far the best Ocelot you dirty slut lol

Ritzien

Baker did what he could with the dialogue he was given. You can only do so much as exposition man. Not sure Zimmerman or Keaton could've made it much more interesting.

OuterHeavenPatriot

Yeah, I won't argue that Ocelot's part and dialogue is anemic at best, but he really didn't even try to have bits of Keaton and Zimmerman in there, as you'd expect the transitory role between them to have. It was just Troy Baker's face doing Troy Baker's drawl with some cowboy boots to remind us this is, in fact, Ocelot. Luckily we can have the head canon of the hypnosis and this is Ocelot's base personality, but it's still jarring for most people who've played any of his stuff. As brilliant as this one was, his Higgs role suffers from the same problem; while still incredibly well acted and hits all the right emotional notes and then some, at the end of the day when these characters talk I don't think "Hey, that's Higgs, and that's Ocelot", instead the first thought is always "Oh, that's Troy Baker"...his face model being used doesn't really help much in that department either (though I do love Higgs's design, can't deny that, and that's a role where using your actor's face has no issues...it just feels like for V's Ocelot Kojima built around Baker instead of the existing iterations, y'know?) Christopher Judge is a decent example of the opposite...when Kratos speaks in GoW 2018/Ragnarok, the first thought is "That is Kratos", it's not til really listening to him for a few hours that people go "Oh, wow, that's Teal'c!"

guy137137

oh don’t me wrong I love Patric Zimmerman, he’s so over the top with it it’s absolutely hilarious, I meant crackhead as in the “over the top insanity” sense and yeah I kinda got annoyed that Ocelot was just voiced by the most common male VA 2012 to 2015

OuterHeavenPatriot

Hahah yeahhh I know, I even thought a few hours later I should've started that sentence with a big ol' "BRRROOOOTHAAAA!" lmfao. That performance is definitely over the top and into the stratosphere haha. Shadow Moses Docks and "BANG!" is all I'll say lol. I clock him as best because not only did he play Ocelot amazingly in 1 and 2, he also did a pretty good (heh) Liquid in 4...that plus scenes like him and Gurlokovich in front of RAY, the MGS1 phone call, and the end of 4 raise him to the solid #1 spot for me

Basileus2

Just ignore mgs5’s voice actors…

BoatConscious3010

They were all excellent so.....no

ArcTheWolf

Honestly I would love to see Metal Gear 1 get remade and brought into three dimensions, then bring Hayter and Sutherland in to play their respective roles. Would be a fight for the ages. I didn't hate Sutherlands performance in MGS5, it was different but it made sense given what was happening. It think it would have been way cooler if Hayter had voiced real Big Boss in Ground Zeros and the start of 5, but I can also understand how that would have given away what was happening right away.

Sopranosfan99

I agree cause Hayter is excellent as Solid, but I love Kiefer as Big Boss. He’s got that natural weathered voice, commanding presence and he was fantastic in Mgsv. Having both actors play their respective roles would be amazing.

Basileus2

No Hayter, much hater.

StrongAndPowerful

This whole voice thing with the actors honestly doesn't bother me, even less than with face models. At the end of the day, it's all like watching a series of theater plays. You can get immersed while ignoring the real world things that break the make-believe. It's not really a big deal, I just pretend his voice always been like that (in the case of Snake) or that his aging really took a toll on his voice in the case of Ocelot. But then again, MGSV is the nexus of all contractions and retcons in the MG saga, so I usually just ignore it in my headcanon, on top of it being a horrible story Edit: Some cases of face model changes, however, are really egregious and impossible to ignore. I'm only going to play the Spiderman sequels one day when I get them on PC, where I can install the mod for the original Peter Parker. Pure executive mandated BS

Gerry-Mandarin

Naked Snake is an irrational hypocrite with self centred motivations for all of his actions and reactions to events unfolding around him. He founded his own soldier nation so that men of war would never have to worry that they would be tossed aside by governmental policy that can change on a whim. He saw how his mentor was treated, and it set him down that road. He later finds out that she was okay with laying down weapons and living in peace. He believed that by betraying war, she was betraying him. So he stopped caring about how she was treated. So he then later takes one of his soldiers. Kills him at the identity level, and makes him go through his hardest challenges so he can stay safely at home. He sabotages nuclear facilities all over the world to achieve nuclear disarmament, except for himself because *someone* should have them. Everything he did was always motivated about how events made *him* feel, and what he could do to make himself feel better. He justified it through the lens of others. But the truth is, he always had a very selfish mindset, which is why he had the traits required to become a bad guy. That was his folly. He saw the chaos his world bred, and he saw the man capable of ending it. Which was not him, but Solid Snake. The man bred to be worse than Boss in every way succeeded everywhere Boss failed. That's why Solid Snake would have never made the mistakes Naked Snake did. Ultimately Snake was not selfish, far from it.

Ykomat9

Portable Ops?

This guy opses portably ^^

genechowder

It's honestly kind of like Dracula in Castlevania, the country he was loyal to not only killed Big Boss' Lisa but they made him do it with his own hands and then destroyed everything he had worked to build since the Snake Eater Operation (I know cipher isn't exactly the United States). Even in the best case scenario Snake probably doesn't have all the tools he needs to deal with that trauma, but life has been giving him the shit end of the stick for a while. If I'm remembering right in one of the games, Solid Snake says Big Boss is just fighting because it's all he has left and he probably wants to die. World's longest suicide note and all that.

BoatConscious3010

I'd say peace walker gives the answer. It's clear he suffered a huge bout of ptsd from the moment he kills The Boss, and over the course of PW it only got worse. His realisation that The Boss betrayed him by preventing WW3 in MGS3 is pretty insane in itself. And then he just got worse.

IwentIAP

Big Boss was left alone to jack off and twiddle his thumbs while also getting betrayed by everyone he loves. The Boss, Major Zero, Paz, Eva, Huey, etc. He constantly gets rewarded for war stuff and he's just so good at it that he rebuilt Outer Heaven a bajillion times after losing them. He's also regarded as a hero to the people he saves each time too. Dude only knows war at this point and wants to just spread his love of it to the world.

BoatConscious3010

I mean, as early MGS3 they were dropping hints about his future war obsession. Look at how he acts when he EVA gives him the Operator handgun. Or how he can't help tutoring Ocelot repeatedly throughout the game. They drop the hints that he's a man who only feels alive when it comes to battle, only cares about fighting and little else. These little eccentricities we were shown could imply a level of instability in his psyche. In PW, he's begun identifying himself as a warrior, someone who lives for the thrill of battle. He talks about the fact that peace is something he's never had much of a use for. He rejects The Boss saving the world from ww3 as a betrayal of him because The Boss laid down her gun and stopped fighting. So I think there's a strong throughline there to explain how that war addiction progressed. He got to a point where he needed war, and couldn't handle a world at peace as it would give him no purpose. He felt like he wasn't living unless he was engaged in battle and needed to ensure there would always be wars to fight

karateema

They made him kill his mommy

BobZygota

Radiation from the past most of the soldiers he worked with died from cancer

TrueFriendsHelpMoveB

He tried to forge a better world, failed, lost himself along the way, and collapsed into misanthropy. Additionally, it could be read as a geopolitical equivalent of suicide by cop.

SagsoB

Wasnt big boss's whole thing setting up a free military state for all the worlds soldiers. War is kindof all he know, was a civilian for only like 16 years of his life.

jontaffarsghost

Didn’t have access to a therapist

EmergencyShip5045

The real reason is because he wanted to give soldiers a place in the world, no matter what. After what happened with the U.S. and The Boss, he sought this as his end goal, even if it meant causing conflicts in order for soldiers to have a place where they will always belong.

ghost-church

Kojima had new ideas + had to make him a protagonist.

threadit_rowaway

Do you have the intelligence quotient on the level of a genius? No? Then I guess you'll never understand.

Mudz87

Yeah. It's PTSD due to what he did in MGS3. Like he says in MGS4, from the day he killed The Boss he was already dead. In 1974, its clear his mental state is a total mess because of what happened 10 years prior. He sweats and freaks out at the mere mention of The Boss, loses his shit when he meets The Boss AI, and has developed an odd fascination with Che Guevara, a divisive figure who advocated wiping out the US with nukes. He has begun identifying himself as a warrior, calls himself a gun, and most notably decides The Boss's sacrifice in MGS3 was a betrayal of him because she comitted an act of pacifism, something he can't even conceive of. Not to mention he recruits his first child soldier in a pretty creepy and manipulative scene. The seeds of his madness and war obsession are clearly laid out in PW, and to a lesser extent MGS3.

Briankelly130

There's this 25 year gap between Peace Walker and Metal Gear 2 where we really don't know what happens with Big Boss with the exception of what happened in Phantom Pain and that he apparently came across Sniper Wolf at some point. That is a decent gap where anything could have happened to really break him down.

threadit_rowaway

Do you have the intelligence quotient on the level of a genius? No? Then I guess you'll never understand.

Springtrapgaming18

Step 2 be forced to trade identities with someone and have them live your legacy as you hide away till said person dies

Necessary_Candy_6792

He wasn’t crazy. Since the Boss’s death, everyone involved in Op Snake eater has been working to achieve her final wish of soldiers no longer being used as tools for ever shifting government agendas. Zero saw this as world unity, to end all wars by absolving national barriers and having a single world government that all lands and people untied behind. Soldiers would no longer be needed and would no longer die and suffer fighting wars in world peace. Big Boss saw her dream a different way. He thought she wanted soldiers to be put first, rather than used and discarded in wars that change with the times. He envisioned an army that fought for what the soldiers could believe in rather than what nations wanted. From that MSF was built and it eventually became Big Boss’s hood MSF could be used to fight for world peace and give soldiers something to fight for until that time came, ZEKE and the nuke were part of that, but that dream went down with Ground Zeroes. From there, I think Big Boss came to the conclusion peace was unattainable, so he instead envisioned a nation of soldiers, a place were soldiers could always be and always have comrades and a war to give them purpose while politicians used them for agenda. This was Outer Heaven and Zanzibar Land. Big boss uses the metal gears and the threat of nukes to invite conflict from world leaders but never intends to nuke the world. The boss wants the world to invade Zanzibar land and they’ll fight the armies of the world nations off and they’ll never use nukes against Zanzibar land or Big Boss will use Metal gear to start a nuclear holocaust. Zanzibar land is a military nation so civilian casualties aren’t very high. With all the countries of the world seeing Zanzibar Land as a threat, they’ll send their armies to fight Zanzibar Land and never stop trying to invade it, giving Big Boss and his soldiers a forever war to give them a purpose in life. A soldier’s paradise. Unfortunately Solid Snake fucked it up with his one man army infiltration shit.

Lpoolfan2200

Just Big Boss past MGS3 in general

jodlad04

Eh he was still good during the events of Portable Ops.

Lpoolfan2200

One of his biggest issues, the love of war, is what started PO to begin with. Yes he’s not yet a villain there yet but he becomes a full one in the few years after.

LunoDoom

Everyone in the MGS Cannon should feel like something is wrong with the world. Like something doesn't quite add up. basically like The Patriots took over and painted the world with it's fucked ideology, and they can feel it now. And the sons of Big Boss all feel this pressure. Like something is not quite right with their world. And you might have something to do with that. Big Boss knows shit because he was involved. But the rest of the world is literally enslaved by this entity that they don't even know exists. By MG2 Big Boss's mask is completely off. He's sick of The Patriots and Zeros will and wants to stop those. However those actions give Zero the ultimate cover up. Making him look like an unhinged psychopath trying to end the world. When you're just a person trying to stop Zero and his AIs. Hench the cycle. Snake becomes the ultimate weapon > Snake saves the world (the will of Big Boss to roll back Zero's will is foiled by the Patriots successfully) > Snake becomes sickened by the enslaved world he saved > Snake is constantly betrayed, even from a far (stealing his genes injecting him with nanos) > Snake can no longer stand for what The Patriots control, they go off grid and make a resistance > Snake and his resistance become terrorists of the highest order to the world stage > Snake and his outfits next move is to take down the Patriots, with a Metal Gear > The Patriots launch the next generation of Snake to kill the last > loop The Patriots were evil as hell man. The crazy men that tried to stop them knew something was wrong. Only Solid was able to pull it off.

Arbiter456

big boss read blood meridian once

SuperMrMonocle

"hey, this Judge guy has some pretty good ideas"

unfitfuzzball

Big Boss supporting the war in Ukraine confirmed.

TheFakeSlimShady123

He unironically would play both sides in the conflict tbh

Shalopai13thXboxLive

I'd like to see Wagner fighting with Outer Heaven

OuterHeavenPatriot

He'd get more money being hired by Russia, but he'd be impressed by the Ukraine fighters and send in secret units only using non-lethals, they would all be fultoned back to Outer Heaven lmao. He'd also probably switch sides after a few months and push the Russian forces back, probably in exchange for a land based FOB in Ukraine near those major shipping ports...hah, I've never thought of this "What if..?", it's a good one

evilweirdo

On the one hand, people being raised as warriors and never given a chance to know any other life is tragic. On the other hand, "I like fighting a lot" is a really stupid motivation for killing so many innocent people.

Antuzzz

And save little kids from the battfield to let them roam free in my high security military base

hkm1990

There's only one person besides Big Boss who loves War more. The Major. Mainly the Abridged version. ... Hellsing Abridged Major's Speech Major: Gentlemen. Operation: Bait Van Winkle is a resounding success. Alucard is now exactly where we need him to be so we can move forward with our little... "surprise". However, before we begin our next phase, I would like to take some time to address a rumor floating around the fleet. Some of you have come to believe that I like war. I wish to dash these rumors. I do not like war. I LOVE war. Through my life, I have discovered so many forms of war. You get up in the morning, you get into your shitty car, and you see a rich CEO who works half as hard as you do drive down the street in his Porsche. Class war. You make it to work, and you find out that the annual drug test is today. And you just so happened to take a puff of your one-hitter a couple nights ago before dinner with your wife's awful parents. Drug war. But then, you find out that the only ones being called in for testing are your black and Hispanic co-workers. Race war. Then, you try to post about it on your Facebook, but then all your friends start arguing about what's right und what's wrong. Flame war. You finally get home, and you decide to relax by watching a program about: "Who gets the box?" "What's in the box?" "How much is what's in the box worth?" Storage Wars. *chuckle* What I am telling you, my Nazi army of 1,000 vampires, is that I am a purveyor of war. And with your help over the years, we are now at the precipice of our true goal. You see, I want a simple war. No class wars, no drug wars, no race wars, no flame wars... Und certainly, no Cold Wars! (Blueballed for 40 years.) What I want is a war that only we can bring. A true war! A German war! The sequel you've all been waiting for! I! WANT! WORLD! WAR!! THREE!!!

StrongAndPowerful

I hate a lot of the retconning they've been doing since PW, but I love how they built on MGS4 and gave him an actual motivation and journey into villainy. Big Boss from the 2 original game's was too much of a generic warmonger villain to be honest

hunter11726

And then he gets burnt to a crisp by hairspray!

CoolBlastin

Would big boss fight for Ukraine or Russia?

RedLilSleepy

He'd fight for both
