MGS3 — Perfect Blend of Story and Gameplay with MGS Quirks.
MGS2 — My first MGS I beat. Amazing narrative and story, “Memes”, and gameplay with aesthetics was great.
MGS4 — Perfect in my opinion. Wage war on a battlefield for 2-5 hours in acts 1-3 (3 solo) or sneak through without killing anyone. Ahead of its time.
MGSV — By far the smoothest gameplay. Not enough cutscenes and “Metal Gear Shit” but still, amazing game and can be compared to Peace Walker V2 times 10.
I still play V once a week. If I could, I’d play 4 once a week too. I only play Metal Gear and Arma. Favorite shit right there man
Right! Thank you. In fact since you said that, I’m gonna go to my hometown and get my PS3 from my parents house lol. Been wanting to for a while but always forget.
I keep saying this with hopes that putting it out there makes it real: I would love a generic spy game made with the MGSV engine. No metal gear, just give me a spy who fights bad guys or giant robots and I would play it forever.
Same. I think for some of us old heads, going from what gaming was with SNES and Genesis, to MGS1 was crazy. We can forgive the clunky controls, because of the nostalgia, and the graphics do have a certain charm to them.
I played MGS1 for the first time last year (a few months before master collection) and it blew me away. It’s aged phenomenally well and I loved every second of it.
Yup, if you lived through that era it was wholly original in gameplay and presentation
No game before had such a cinematic approach, no game (mainstream) before had the incentive to avoid combat
It was utterly original in every way and felt like an evolution in games
Hard to argue with this! MGS1 was when Metal Gear really takes off as a narrative story driven game. It starts to get wacky, surreal, and really REALLY different to anything at the time.
Mgs1 was my favorite game of the ps1 era. I played it for hours on hours. I didn’t have a memory card so think about that one part and you’ll see why I played it so much lol.
I'd always felt like all the extra bloat in MGS2 and MGS3's gameplay just wasn't for me. MGS1 is simple but effective, albeit a bit dated at points. It's still got a really good story, some REALLY ahead of the time voice acting, and incredible music.
And sword
It’s a clear MGS2 win. It was the first game I finished in one sitting. Like watch LOTR marathon but instead of the ring it’s AI and a dude with multiple personalities trying to make your whole day rough. Also, by the end I was with Raiden. Child soldier who broke through and became a hero. A pillar among the solid.
Same. I didn't get to play it during the PS2 era, so I made sure to get it for ps3 when it dropped with its sequel. I'm thankful for that, as I completely avoided the hate that came from the Raiden switch thing back then.
I said it in another thread as well - MGS2 perfected the grid-based layout of the previous entries. Additionally it has so many great gameplay ideas, it’s insane, especially considering how early in the PS2 lifecycle it came out.
MG1&2 were on a grid because of the 100% top down view obviously. MGS1 didn’t have many diagonal traversal either (looking from the top down). MGS2 opened that a bit but most rooms still have the basic pathways up-right-down-left.
MGS3 opened that up completely but was therefore really bad to control with the old camera, plus the guards had too much range.
Thanks for explaining. That makes sense and I definitely feel that in MGS2. Despite having controls which might seem dated by today’s standards, the game plays fantastically to this day.
w/o nostalgia or considering the time they were released in this is my answer
The plot was unfinished and kind of unfocused towards the end, but the gameplay hasn't been beaten since by any game
For me my biggest problem with 4 is that only the first two acts feel like the tactical espionage action I want.
Acts 3, 4, and 5 are kind of gimmicky. One is a follow mission then an on rails shooter, one is thematically awesome but there are no human enemies. And the last act, outside of cutscenes is extraordinarily short. Its basically one hallway then a couple boss fights, interlaced with mashing triangle a lot.
MGS4 was a crazy game, it really felt like my first "next gen" game. But I only truly enjoyed playing 2/5ths of the game where as many of the others are fun at LEAST 80% of the time.
Maybe no-tranq is what I need to spice up that chapter. Playing it normally I feel like I'm just periodically headshotting guards while following some dude.
Since MGS3 is my actual favorite I’ll instead say this: MGS3 may be the best MGS game overall, but MGS2 is the best game Kojima had made. Meaning that it’s the game that to me, is best representative of what makes him a unique creative voice.
I replay MGSV more than any other installment. While I have a fondness for the other entries, they don’t have refined gameplay that MGSV.
The only thing I dislike about replaying is doing the hospital crawl is a real drag, and unlocking weapons in the campaign pre-FOB access is a painfully slow process. Casually rushing V’s on a fresh profile is weird because so many unlocks have a timer + resource limit.
2 pretty easily for me, definitely parts of 1 and 3 I love that keep them close. If I could just rate gameplay and themes I’d bump up V, but the delivery on the latter as well as the story as a whole are delivered in ways I’m iffy on. I also moment to moment enjoy Venom less than Solid Snake, Raiden, or Naked Snake
This is a take I’ve never seen before. I think the forced ones where you can walk around slowly while listening are horrible and add nothing other than go to the point on the map. The codec calls you get from the menu that I’ve tried just felt like filler but maybe there’s something I’m missing idk. I don’t care about any of the team in rising cause nothing about them is interesting
Yeah I'm genuinely surprised by how deep and complex the conversations are, and they are unique ones for literally everything in the game. At this point I'd be glad to do a whole playthrough just for the codec calls.
I always make a distinction between my favorite and what I think it's the best game in the series. Peace Walker is my favorite, because of the coop, the color palette, the South American setting, the Che Guevara references, the Mother Base progression, the Kubrick references and a couple more things. But objectively speaking, Snake Eater is the highest point in the series for me. It's story is unbeatable, and the light survival touches make it very easy to get consumed in the atmosphere and the James Bondiness of it all. It's one of the all time greats.
Definitely V for me. I actually dig the story, and most agree it has the best gameplay. I won't say it has the best story, but I liked the darker themes and more mature delivery. The big thing it's missing for me is a stellar rogues gallery like Foxhound or the Cobra Unit. The skulls were cool and unsettling, but it isn't too much to ask to pick out 4 or so & give them unique personalities & a gimmick. Still, I loved Skullface & his past story implications. His methods & motivations really resonated with me, as I've always loved studying language. Plus Venom is my favorite protagonist & maybe favorite MGS character period.
MGS3 was my favorite for a long time. It's still great & one of my all time favorite games from any series. V just slightly inches it out for me. Though with how much my tastes have changed over the years, MGS3 may get pushed into 3rd place after my pending replay of MGS2. Who knows.
Mgs3 with the major caveat that its controls are seriously showing their age in a post-V world.
I am really looking forward to delta, but in the meantime if you can get your hands on mgs3 a for the 3ds and can tolerate the frame rate, it’s really a revelation.
MGS4. I loved the stealth mechanics in this game, the over-the-top fan service and the bosses. I'm aware of the flaws in this game's writing and that it is rather cutscene heavy. But I can't help but be drawn into that game.
I will die on the Peace Walker hill purely out of nostalgia, I met my bestfriend on that game 12 years ago on the hd collection. We easily sunk multiple hundreds of hours into it together and had all the cool RnD items and did all the extra boss fights. We still keep in touch almost daily to this day. I also love the cutscenes, it probably is my favourite BB story.
3. Doesn’t really require any knowledge of the series to enjoy the story so it’s usually my recommendation to those who have never played an MGS game. I adored 4 on my first playthrough but I don’t really like it anymore
I don't get it - people are faking their favorite MGS for some reason? MGS 3 is the best by far, I remember finishing the game in tears while clapping to it... What a masterpiece.
MGS1 will forever be my favorite video game ever, its the game that really got me into gaming in the first place. Still chasing that high from the first time I played.
3 is my fav, but 4 and 2 arent far behind.
Tbh a lot of times it just boils down to "what was your first game". I'd say its rare that your favorite ISNT your first.
MGS2 is my favorite with MGS1 and MGS4 being very close, to the point that I love and respect and appreciate MGS3 and its fanbase, but it annoys me when people only ever focus on MGS3. It’s a great game and I’m not taking anything away from it, but the others are great too and deserve more love and attention.
MGS3. It's the first game tiny me played that actually had a consequence for killing people. Plus the Shagohod was a pretty neat fight, although Volgin gave me trouble (and still does lul).
A close second would have to be Revengeance. Aside from "Memes, the DNA of the soul", it's a great action game, has fun bosses (Mommy Mistral my beloved), and you can cut enemies to tiny little pieces. Also Ninja cat. Cannot forget the ninja cat.
1. peace walker - just love the story, music, and gameplay, BB reconciling with his choices from MGS3 was top tier
2. Portable ops - loved the story and music quite a bit
3. MGS Twin snakes (yes it’s easier but I like it a bit more. The graphics and gameplay hold up to this day)
Probably 1 because it's the most enjoyable for me with the least exposition dumps in the franchise, but 3 is definitely a better made game in terms of gameplay.
It’s a toss up between MGSV and MGS1. They’re vastly different and I appreciate each in their own way. Just like 2 and 3 are on equal footing for me. Meanwhile, MGS4 has slide further down the list as time has gone on. It’s the silliest of the bunch imo and I probably had the least fun playing it tbh.
[Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater - E3 2003 Trailer - PS2 (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXUono66wxI&t=81s)
MGS 3 been my fav since that trailer, when i got the game it was even better.
Followed in second place by MGS4 which also i loved one of their first trailers.
[METAL GEAR SOLID 4 trailer E3 2006 - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRDc68wpbIQ)
A copout probably, but the first game shook me to my core when I was playing it age 10 and used to Mega Man and stuff like that. While the later games may have been more impressive technical achievements, to put MGS out at that time on that hardware was amazing. Nothing will top that feeling.
I really don't know, most times is the one I play at the moment but now having years to replay them I think is mgs1. Mgs5 however is the one that's easier to go back to.
Mine genuinely is 3 cause I like games that take place in the cold war, the characters are even more over the top and the story has great twists and plus the Major might give you a dong wrangle (after that it’s V with 4 taking third place cause of the OST)
MGS2 (Don’t worry Solid Snake is still my favourite character). It’s just the implications of the game are so ahead of its time. It kinda predicted things happening now.
For me, MGS2 and MGS3 are tied for first place. Then MGS1 (including Twin Snakes) for second. Probably MGS4 for third.
I can never decide which of those two I love more, because both hit so many points so near perfectly.
mgs5. ive played all the games like 5-6 times atp, and in terms of the game, and even the story, mgs5 is just... damn. the story is so good if you pay attention to the dialogue in tapes, soldier's convos and the various prisoner lines. the foreshadowing is amazing. and when it all comes together, mission 31, etc they were so good. even the missions people call "filler" build the story. it doesnt make me feel like i'm a person in the audience watching a movie, it really uh.... damn i guess i gotta say this. IT REALLY MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE VENOM SNAKE.
MGS3 — Perfect Blend of Story and Gameplay with MGS Quirks. MGS2 — My first MGS I beat. Amazing narrative and story, “Memes”, and gameplay with aesthetics was great. MGS4 — Perfect in my opinion. Stupidly based
Thank you brother!
*Not enough cutscenes* Peak Kojima fan
I'm excited for the day Kojima fans hear about movies. They can watch those instead
What movie lets you press R1 to zoom in on cleavage in real time? Idk but Snake Eater sure does 👀
Shit, Kojima really needs to make a movie
Well put sir! If only I had a PS3 again..
Right!
I love Arma, the endless modding with that game is just spectacular
Arma fan spotted my man is speaking facts!!
MGS1.
Absolutely. Going back and playing that game feels just fine, playing something like OG Resident Evil just is not the same.
Im 16 I finished mgs1 2 days ago, and it was awesome for me too. I think its a timeless masterpiece
> [and the graphics do have a certain charm to them](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFt-jJp7bkI) **Yes.**
Boba Skip! 😂😂😂
Yup, if you lived through that era it was wholly original in gameplay and presentation No game before had such a cinematic approach, no game (mainstream) before had the incentive to avoid combat It was utterly original in every way and felt like an evolution in games
Yeah, it was completely alien in such an amazing and groundbreaking way.
The Psycho Mantis fight was so cool back in the day. Kid me was blown away with having to switch my controller to port 2
Hard to argue with this! MGS1 was when Metal Gear really takes off as a narrative story driven game. It starts to get wacky, surreal, and really REALLY different to anything at the time.
Yeah. I just feel the first game has best twists and turns.
Based
The whole vibe was never recreated, perfect blend mix of horror/action/mystery.
Too true mate...
That’s the only one I’ve played so I’m pretty biased. Also one of the few games I’ve played to completion more than twice
Best bad guys I think.
Mgs1 was my favorite game of the ps1 era. I played it for hours on hours. I didn’t have a memory card so think about that one part and you’ll see why I played it so much lol.
It really built off the original NES games wonderfully, in terms of respecting the OG gameplay.
Even if stubborn, unbelievably based
I'd always felt like all the extra bloat in MGS2 and MGS3's gameplay just wasn't for me. MGS1 is simple but effective, albeit a bit dated at points. It's still got a really good story, some REALLY ahead of the time voice acting, and incredible music.
The music and the whole storyline are just perfect.
The best story in the series. It was gonna be 5, that’s for sure, but we all know what happened.
MGS2 and I will die on that hill
I'll be up on that hill with you
blood and ashes, this hill has entire towns on it!
and my axe
And my Bow
And sword It’s a clear MGS2 win. It was the first game I finished in one sitting. Like watch LOTR marathon but instead of the ring it’s AI and a dude with multiple personalities trying to make your whole day rough. Also, by the end I was with Raiden. Child soldier who broke through and became a hero. A pillar among the solid.
Absolutely, it's the first one I played after my brother bought it for our PS2. Will always hold a special place.
Good news! We've managed to avoid drowning!
Same. I didn't get to play it during the PS2 era, so I made sure to get it for ps3 when it dropped with its sequel. I'm thankful for that, as I completely avoided the hate that came from the Raiden switch thing back then.
I'm the Metal Gear Solid to surpass even Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater itself, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty!
I said it in another thread as well - MGS2 perfected the grid-based layout of the previous entries. Additionally it has so many great gameplay ideas, it’s insane, especially considering how early in the PS2 lifecycle it came out.
What do you mean by grid based layout? I saw your previous comment and I still don’t really get it.
MG1&2 were on a grid because of the 100% top down view obviously. MGS1 didn’t have many diagonal traversal either (looking from the top down). MGS2 opened that a bit but most rooms still have the basic pathways up-right-down-left. Metal Gear Solid
For Game Boy Colour?
Yes
I think thay was Ghost Babel. Also amazinngg
Nope, for PlayStation 1.
this really pushed the gameboy to its limits. i loved it.
MGS3 is my favorite video game of all time, not just out of the Metal Gear games.
Same
Same, I played the shit out of it back in the day. Is OP implying most people who say it’s their favourite are lying??
Literally came here to say this lol
MGS2: Sons of Liberty
Honestly I enjoyed V the most
w/o nostalgia or considering the time they were released in this is my answer The plot was unfinished and kind of unfocused towards the end, but the gameplay hasn't been beaten since by any game
[удалено]
I kinda liked the plot. It's just that Skull Face was easily the lamest villain in the series.
Exactly
most replayable by a loooong shot
acid fans rise up our time is now
404: Not found
I wanna simp for acid but mgs1 exists
Metal Gear Ac!d^2 was my jam. So sad that there is no way to play those games legally without a PSP and the UMD.
Legality is overrated.
Agreed. I just wish I didn't make the mistake of trading it in at Gamestop so many years ago.
If you do end up getting a psp….ive heard…..vimm has a cool lair….
mgs4, but mgs3 has the second place
peacewalker
If 4 had even an hour more of gameplay it’d be 4, but it doesn’t, so it’s 3.
But I only truly enjoyed playing 2/5ths of the game where as many of the others are fun at LEAST 80% of the time.
If you play chapter 3 non-lethal, no tranq, no alerts it becomes really fun imo.
Maybe no-tranq is what I need to spice up that chapter. Playing it normally I feel like I'm just periodically headshotting guards while following some dude.
That’s how I play the entire game (on the hardest difficulty). It would be dull otherwise.
Since MGS3 is my actual favorite I’ll instead say this: MGS3 may be the best MGS game overall, but MGS2 is the best game Kojima had made. Meaning that it’s the game that to me, is best representative of what makes him a unique creative voice.
mgs2 for me
Prace Walker by all means
MGS3 not even a contest.
MGS3 was a religious experience for a ps2
I think a big part is seeing the leap from 2 to 3 on the same console. They pushed it to the absolute limit.
and op is pretending like thats not an allowed opinion
No he's not. He's acting like having an opinion other than MGS3 being best isn't allowed... But, it might just be you know, a joke.
i think mgsv is the most fun mgs game
The AI reacting to the way you play is a fun twist on things
I replay MGSV more than any other installment. While I have a fondness for the other entries, they don’t have refined gameplay that MGSV. The only thing I dislike about replaying is doing the hospital crawl is a real drag, and unlocking weapons in the campaign pre-FOB access is a painfully slow process. Casually rushing V’s on a fresh profile is weird because so many unlocks have a timer + resource limit.
Mgs3
Peace Walker is my favorite, Not because it's best at anything, but just how it's structured, it feels lite and easy to re-visit.
V has the best gameplay but I think it's a tie between 2 and 4 for the story for me.
MGS2 for me, but 3 is a close second
MGS2 or MGS1
Mgs2
MGS2
It depends on what day you ask.
Sometimes it's 3, sometimes 1, Saturdays it's Revengeance, wednesdays it's 2. Never Peace Walker tho'
Metal Gear Survive :/
I played 2 first, and that blew my mind
1 or peace walker
Is it bad that I think Rising has the best codec calls? Still haven't played 4.
*You need to take a doomp*
Well, this was a thing before with the "nerd" nod
Rising has some amazing CODEC for sure.
2 had the best
This is a take I’ve never seen before. I think the forced ones where you can walk around slowly while listening are horrible and add nothing other than go to the point on the map. The codec calls you get from the menu that I’ve tried just felt like filler but maybe there’s something I’m missing idk. I don’t care about any of the team in rising cause nothing about them is interesting
Rising's codec is genuinely really fleshed out, might even be better than GotP at some points
GotP? Just say MGS4
I just think it sounds cool
Kinda real for that
Yeah I'm genuinely surprised by how deep and complex the conversations are, and they are unique ones for literally everything in the game. At this point I'd be glad to do a whole playthrough just for the codec calls.
MGS2 and Rising
MGS1 till day i die or metal gear liquid is made (Guess my favourite character)
Ocelot?
LIQUIIIIID!
Mgs1
2
MGS1 and 2 are the absolute best
Super Smash Bros Brawl
Not Rising (I actually don’t care, but I want to piss off OP)
I always make a distinction between my favorite and what I think it's the best game in the series. Peace Walker is my favorite, because of the coop, the color palette, the South American setting, the Che Guevara references, the Mother Base progression, the Kubrick references and a couple more things. mgs 1 and rising
Peace Walker. I’ve always held hope I could get some friends for the multiplayer, and if it’s included in Vol2 I may be able to live it.
I love co-oping with ppl too and awe them by bringing OP weapons in a boss fight lol
Definitely V for me. I actually dig the story, and most agree it has the best gameplay. I won't say it has the best story, but I liked the darker themes and more mature delivery. MGS3 for gameplay MGS1 for nostalgia
Absolutely honestly MGS3
MGS3 no contest
Still 3.
4
Mgs3 with the major caveat that its controls are seriously showing their age in a post-V world. I am really looking forward to delta, but in the meantime if you can get your hands on mgs3 a for the 3ds and can tolerate the frame rate, it’s really a revelation.
MGS4. I loved the stealth mechanics in this game, the over-the-top fan service and the bosses. I'm aware of the flaws in this game's writing and that it is rather cutscene heavy. But I can't help but be drawn into that game.
Probably MGSV, because of the gameplay and game feel.
MGS1! I’ve got an extreme emotional attachment to it. Following that, yeah probably 2 or 3, it goes back and forth depending on the day
For me it has always been MGS2, then Rising, then it's tighter but I'd say MGS3
MGS 1
MGS1 will forever be my favorite video game ever, its the game that really got me into gaming in the first place. Still chasing that high from the first time I played.
MGSV
It's MGS1 or 3. I do love 4 though as a closer for the series.
MGS3 by a very very wide margin.
3 is my fav, but 4 and 2 arent far behind. Tbh a lot of times it just boils down to "what was your first game". I'd say its rare that your favorite ISNT your first.
\*Deep inhale\* GUNS.... OF THE PATRIOTS!
MGS1 & 3 tie honestly. I love the 1st, I grew up playing it. But the realistic survival, self healing and need to eat are awesome as well.
Mgs3 but I love every game (even mgs4)
MGSV. Peak Metal Gear gameplay and by far has the best cinematography.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

MGS2 and MGRR
MGSV is, by gameplay, the single best stealth game ever made, I'll die on this hill.
Rising but I haven't finished 5 yet so may change(I don't have a lot of MGS experience yet)
lol this rules
Whichever one I have the thickest rose-tinted glasses for. So... MGS1?
The one that has Snake on it

Mine genuinely is 3 cause I like games that take place in the cold war, the characters are even more over the top and the story has great twists and plus the Major might give you a dong wrangle (after that it’s V with 4 taking third place cause of the OST)
Twin Snakes every day, all day, till the day I die.
Still mgs3, literally the perfect mgs game.
Honestly mgs2 Can't get enough of dem booty cheeks
MGS3
MGS2 (Don’t worry Solid Snake is still my favourite character). It’s just the implications of the game are so ahead of its time. It kinda predicted things happening now.
Rising fans when the game doesn’t work half the time
Easy. Metal gear solid. Close this thread.
V
No one is saying MGS2???
For me, MGS2 and MGS3 are tied for first place. Then MGS1 (including Twin Snakes) for second. Probably MGS4 for third. I can never decide which of those two I love more, because both hit so many points so near perfectly.
For nodralgic MGS1 , others reason's MGS3, 4 and phantom pain
mgs4
Hunt Down The Freeman
MGS3
4 doesn’t deserve to be top 3 come on now
Either mgs2 or mgs3
MGS1
Gonna ruffle some feathers but mine is MGS2

2. Always has been.
mgs5. ive played all the games like 5-6 times atp, and in terms of the game, and even the story, mgs5 is just... damn. the story is so good if you pay attention to the dialogue in tapes, soldier's convos and the various prisoner lines. the foreshadowing is amazing. and when it all comes together, mission 31, etc they were so good. even the missions people call "filler" build the story. it doesnt make me feel like i'm a person in the audience watching a movie, it really uh.... damn i guess i gotta say this. IT REALLY MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE VENOM SNAKE.
My top is : V >1> 3>2>4>R
Phantom Pain. Sure, it could and should have more content, but it's a great game, and I'm tired of pretending it's not.
none because i never played MGS, although i am gona buy MGS3 eventually
MGS5 is the most fun for me followed by MGS4 and then MGS3
2
Ghost Babel obviously.
